Chester are in the FA Cup proper for just a second time, reaching the second round in 2014-15 when they knocked out Southend United in the first round before losing 3-0 in a replay to Barnsley in the next round.
York City have been eliminated in their last eight FA Cup first round appearances, last going into the second round in 2010-11 when they beat Rotherham United in a replay at Bootham Crescent.
Chester’s Elliott Whitehouse scored in their FA Cup fourth qualifying round win over Hartlepool this season and also netted in his last first round appearance back in November 2020 for Forest Green in a 6-2 defeat to Lincoln. Whitehouse also made two FA Cup appearances for York in 2013-14.
York have lost their last six games in the FA Cup proper, their worst ever losing run in the competition (first round onwards). They were beaten 2-1 by Shrewsbury at this stage last season.
