Marseille are looking to progress from a European knockout tie after losing the first leg for the first time since 2017-18 when OM lost 0-1 to RB Leipzig in the UEFA Europa League quarter-final before winning 5-2 at home to progress to the semi-final (5-3 agg). Since then, they’ve been eliminated in both of their last two knockout ties after losing the first leg.
Benfica are looking to reach the semi-final of a major European competition for the first time since 2013-14 in the UEFA Europa League before being eliminated by Juventus at that stage. The last time Portuguese outfit won the first leg of a Europa League quarter-final (4-2 v Eintracht Frankfurt in 2019), they went on to lose 0-2 in the second-leg and were knocked out on away goals.
Marseille have won four of their last five home games against Portuguese sides in all competitions (L1), though they did lose the last time they hosted Benfica (2-1 in the 2009-10 UEFA Europa League).
Benfica are winless in their last five away games against French sides in all competitions (D3 L2) since beating Bordeaux 3-2 in March 2013.
Marseille are unbeaten in each of their last eight UEFA Europa League home matches (W5 D3), winning all of their last four at the Stade Vélodrome and scoring 3+ goals in all four victories.
Benfica have lost just one of their last six away matches in the UEFA Europa League (W2 D3), keeping a clean sheet in both of their last two trips - they’ve never kept three consecutive away clean sheets in the competition (UEFA Europa League/UEFA Cup).
Ángel Di María has been directly involved in five goals in his last five UEFA Europa League matches (4 goals, 1 assist). Overall, only Óscar Cardozo (20) and Pizzi (9) have scored more goals for Benfica in the competition than Di María (7).
Marseille’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been involved in 12 goals in his last 10 UEFA Europa League matches (10 goals, 2 assists), providing a goal contribution in each of his last five appearances (5 goals, 2 assists). Aubameyang’s goal against Benfica in the first leg took his tally overall in the Europa League to 34, four more than any other player in the competition’s history since it began in 2009.
