Derry City leapfrogged Bohemians into second place in the League of Ireland Premiership with a breathless 4-3 win at Dalymount Park.

Derry led 2-1 at the break after Michael Duffy and Adam O'Reilly's goals overturned Douglas James-Taylor's early penalty.

A hectic eight-minute spell midway in the second half saw Bohemians level twice before the visitors retook the lead.

Ronan Boyce was sent off late but Derry saw out a thrilling win that could prove crucial in the race for European football.

The last time these two met at Dalymount, the hosts were awarded and scored a penalty inside a minute.

It was not quite that early tonight but, on eight minutes, a mistimed challenge from Carl Winchester on James Clarke saw Rob Hennessy point to the spot, with James-Taylor converting to give the home side an early lead.

Having struggled to convert possession into chances, Derry struck after 20 minutes when Duffy curled home after Kacper Chorazka denied Dipo Akinyemi.

Alan Reynolds's side responded but were denied a second goal by Brian Maher, who produced a stunning save to tip James-Taylor's header away.

That proved a big moment as, on the stroke of half-time, the Candystripes took the lead when O'Reilly put the ball through Chorazka's legs following a Derry corner.

After a slow start to the second half, the game erupted back into life as Bohs levelled on 66 minutes when captain Jordan Flores stole in at the back post to slide home Dayle Rooney's ball across goal.

However, the visitors responded just two minutes later when O'Reilly hammered a shot into the bottom corner from a Winchester pass for his second of the evening.

Four minutes later, James-Taylor notched his second after Maher spilled Ross Tierney's free-kick delivery.

But with the game continuing to swing, Akinyemi capped a frenetic spell with the winner, heading home at the back post from Duffy's cross.

The drama continued when Boyce was shown a second yellow card on 77 minutes for a lunge on Clarke.

Bohs pushed for a late leveller but were repeatedly denied by an inspired Maher as Derry held on for a hugely entertaining win.

The result moves Lynch's side, who next host Shelbourne on 19 September, seven points behind leaders Shamrock Rovers, who have two games in hand.
