    Daily Mirror

Talking about the Premier League profit and sustainability rules (PSR), the Mirror reports on how close Aston Villa came to a 10-point deduction this summer after selling midfielder Douglas Luiz to Juventus "in the nick of time" to avoid punishment.

The story quotes Damian Vidagany, Villa's director of director of football operations, who said: "There was a bomb with a countdown - and we were there to cut the cable."

Luiz signed for Juventus in a £42.35m deal on 30 June, the day before sanctions would have been levelled against Villa.

  2. O'Boyle to leave Man Utdpublished at 08:16 British Summer Time 4 September

Manchester United’s deputy football director Andy O’Boyle is set to leave the club.

O’Boyle came to Old Trafford from the Premier League two years ago at a time when John Murtough was making changes as football director.

However, INEOS’ involvement has fundamentally altered the structure of the club.

Sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox are now in charge of football operations, effectively leaving O’Boyle with little responsibility.

He was an important bridge from the early months of the year into July, when Ashworth and chief executive Omar Berrada came to the club and had a significant involvement in the summer transfer window.

However, as the club moves forward there is no role for O’Boyle, who is going to take a bit of time out to consider his next options.

  4. Leicester decision bad news for Premier Leaguepublished at 08:04 British Summer Time 4 September

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Premier League sources were incredulous last night at the independent panel's decision to rule they cannot take action against Leicester over potential profit and sustainability breaches.

Effectively, the ruling confirmed that as Leicester officially ceased to be a Premier League side when their share certificate was handed over in mid-June 2023, the league did not have the power to take action against them over the accounting period that ended on 30 June 2023.

The Premier League can appeal. But the bar is high and what would they be appealing against? The ruling indicates the wording in the Premier League's regulations is not legally sound.

That will certainly be looked at. But what does it mean for Nottingham Forest, who were not a Premier League club for part of the period they were deducted points for last season - and also potential breaches in the latest set of accounts clubs are due to present to the league in December.

And, beyond that, if the Premier League can't make this stick - and it is a relatively straightforward case - what does it mean for their chances of a successful hearing against Manchester City later this year?

The Guardian reports that an independent panel found that the Premier League had "no jurisdiction" for its case against Leicester - for alleged breaches of its financial rules - to be heard.

The story also says that the panel conceded that the league's profit and sustainability rules were "far from well drafted".

The Sun leads with quotes from new Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte, who has vowed to "fight until he drops" after making a £50.8m switch from Paris St-Germain to Old Trafford on transfer deadline day.

Ugarte, 23, a Uruguay international, says he wants to bring his country's "garra charrua" battling spirit to the club.

His comments follow United's 3-0 defeat at home to rivals Liverpool on Sunday.

  8. England's fresh facespublished at 07:33 British Summer Time 4 September

The England squad includes some new faces, and a few returning after missing out this summer.

Manchester City winger Jack Grealish is one of those back in the fold and he gave debutant Angel Gomes a warm welcome.

Gomes also sat down with the England media team alongside Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White, another player hoping to win his first cap in upcoming Nations League matches in Dublin, on Saturday, against the Republic of Ireland, and back at Wembley against Finland on Tuesday.

Chelsea winger Noni Madueke and Newcastle defender Tino Livramento are the other two debutants included in interim manager Lee Carsley's first England squad.

  10. Foden, Palmer and Watkins ruled out of England squadpublished at 07:17 British Summer Time 4 September

The big news overnight, in terms of the England men's team, is that Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Ollie Watkins have withdrawn from the squad for their upcoming Nations League fixtures.

Manchester City forward Foden, who was recently named PFA Player of the Year, was called up by interim England boss Lee Carsley, but did not join up with the squad because of illness.

Chelsea forward Palmer and Aston Villa striker Watkins both reported for duty at St George's Park, but have returned to their respective clubs "to continue their rehabilitation from ongoing issues", said the Football Association.

England face the Republic of Ireland in Dublin on Saturday before hosting Finland at Wembley three days later.

The games will be their first since they lost to Spain in the final of Euro 2024 on 14 July.

Gareth Southgate resigned soon after, with under-21s boss Carsley appointed interim manager on 9 August.

  11. Leicester win appeal against decision over PSR chargepublished at 07:13 British Summer Time 4 September

In case you missed it, Leicester have won an appeal against a decision that could have led to a points deduction for an alleged breach of Premier League Profit and Sustainability (PSR) rules.

An independent panel found the Premier League did not have the jurisdiction to punish the club.

The Premier League said it was "surprised and disappointed" by the panel's decision.

Leicester said they had "simply sought to ensure that the rules are applied based on how they are actually written".

The Foxes were charged by the Premier League for breaching spending rules. They appealed against this charge but an independent commission then ruled the top flight could take action.

Leicester then appealed against that decision - based on the fact they were in the English Football League (EFL) at the time the charge was issued - and the outcome was announced on Tuesday.
