Italy manager Andrea Soncin, speaking in his pre-match news conference: "We tried to work a lot on the details, but leaving that sense of lightness to approach such an important tournament with serenity. We alternated seriousness with fun, it's wonderful to be able to work with these girls and we are getting closer: we are ready, we can't wait. I don't know any magic potions, we will continue to work as we have always done".

Italy were once one of the heavyweights of European women's football, but that hasn't really been the case since the turn of the millenium.

However, things may well be turning a corner for the Azzurre. The Italian top flight, the Serie A Femminile, is fully professional and improving in quality.

Could domestic improvements translate to the national team? We'll find out at Euro 2025.

Form: Italy may have only won two games in qualifying but they still managed to pip former European champions Netherlands and Norway to the top of their group.

With wins against Wales and Denmark in the Nations League, and a draw against Sweden, they head into the Euros on a good run of form.

Tournament hopes: Italy could be the dark horses of Euro 2025. After failing to advance past the group stage at the last World Cup and Euros, Italy have changed managers, with Andre Soncin taking charge and leading their resurgence.

Since then, the Azurre have defeated top-10 sides Spain, Germany and the Netherlands. However, unable to string a run of two or more wins together, they have struggled for consistency.

Right, let's turn our attention back to this match.

Another Euro 2025 game, another ground.

Tonight, it's the turn of Stade de Tourbillon - and the town of Sion - to host its first fixture of Euro 2025.

It's the smallest ground of the tournament, with a capacity of just 7,750, and home to Swiss club FC Sion.

Some facts about the capital of the canton of Valais include that it apparently boasts 14 heritage sites of national significance and has failed in bids to host the Olympics in 1976, 2002, 2006 and 2026.

England forward Aggie Beever-Jones on playing at her first major tournament: "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous. I was literally in the crowd when the girls won it at Wembley and not once did I think in three years time I'd be here in Switzerland being able to represent my country. It's an immensely proud moment for me and definitely starting to feel more real now that we're here and settled into this amazing base camp. I'm super excited to get the tournament kickstarted and show everyone what England can do."

England forward Aggie Beever-Jones on this being a new-look Lionesses side: "I think firstly we have to credit the girls who have not made this tournament and what they've done for the women's game. I know I can look at Millie and Fran and say what they've done for my career being at Chelsea and having them. Millie was the first person to congratulate me and say I deserved this.

"It's the theme of this summer, we're a new England and we've got the experience of some of the older players who have won the Euros and some younger players. I think it's a good thing, a good balance, we have some young, fresh players and some with experience and we'll hopeuflly be able to balance out and come away with a trophy."

England

England forward Chloe Kelly, speaking to BBC Sport: "I think in every tournament the challenge is really high. Every team is coming with the same mindset. And we know that we need to be on our A game every, every time we step onto the pitch. And training's been really good. It's been challenging and hopefully come Saturday we're in a really good place. But of course you want to grow as the tournament goes on. But I think game by game we want to be better and hopefully we can start that on Saturday."

We'll continue build-up to the first game of the evening soon, but, as the Lionesses continue their preparation for their opening game against France on Saturday, let's spend a bit of time looking at what's going on for England at the moment.

Italy's path to qualification was impressive - seeing them finish above the Netherlands and Norway to top their group.

The Azzurre won two of their six games, drawing three and losing one. A better goal difference earned them first place.

Belgium, meanwhile, needed the play-offs to reach this stage. They finished third in their group, winning only one game, but won against Greece and Ukraine to reach the finals.

The meeting between Belgium and Italy is the first game in Group B.

At 20:00 BST, 2023 World Cup winners Spain take on Portugal.

Euro 2025 kicked off yesterday, with Finland and Norway winning their opening games in Group A.

Finland came out on top against Iceland after their opponents had a player sent off, while Norway came from behind to beat hosts Switzerland.
