Darwin Nunez may fall further down the pecking order at Anfield with the arrival of Hugo Ekitike, but the Uruguay striker has started pre-season like he means business.
The 26-year-old was on the scoresheet in Liverpool's opening 3-1 friendly win at Preston and on Sunday scored a hat-trick in a 5-0 victory over Stoke.

I’m thrilled about Liverpool’s spending in the middle and up front. It’s a clear sign of intent to challenge for the title again. However, I feel more focus needs to be put on the defence, specifically the centre backs. I fear we lack depth in case of injury or rotation.

Well Lee, Hugo Ekitike has been widely touted as a potential replacement for Darwin Nunez, who has failed to catch fire in front of goal during his time at Liverpool.
The issue with Nunez has largely centred around his conversion rate, consistently wasting good chances to score.
Last season, the Uruguay striker managed five league goals and two assists in 30 appearances, less than his xG [expected goals] tally of 6.91 goals.
Over the course of his 95 Premier League games for the Reds, the 26-year-old forward has managed 25 goals from 226 shots, converting just over 11% of his efforts on goal.
In total, he has underperformed his expected goals in the Premier League by 15.47.
In comparison, while Hugo Ekitike managed a career-best 15 league goals for Eintracht Frankfurt last season, he converted a similarly low number of his shots on goal - 12.8% - and underperformed his expected goals total by 6.7.

Very happy with our business. All players fit the model that we go with, all early 20's and potential through the roof. To be honest I don't know a lot about Ekitike but I trust the club as they rarely get it wrong (Nunez is one they got wrong!).

Eintracht Frankfurt have earned over £200m from selling Hugo Ekitike, Omar Marmoush and Randal Kolo Muani in the last two years having spent around £14m combined to sign them... here's how they did it:

I’m so happy with Ekitike as a signing, he’s young and has flourished in the Bundesliga, plus he is linking up with other players with Bundesliga experience like Frimpong, Wirtz and Konate who will all help him. He’s young and confident and was much cheaper than Isak.

So how do Hugo Ekitike's numbers stack up when compared to Alexander Isak's last season?
Firstly, only three players aged 23 or under were directly involved in more goals than Ekitike in the Europe’s big five leagues.
The striker scored 15 top-flight goals and assisted eight, with his combined tally emulating Cole Palmer and one more than Florian Wirtz and Lamine Yamal mustered – not bad company to keep.
While his haul of 15 league goals in 2024-25 was a career best, his finishing appears a potential weakness. The 23-year-old underperformed his expected goals total by 6.7 and converted just 12.8% of his shots – with Isak almost twice as lethal in front of goal last season:

I understand why some Liverpool fans are underwhelmed with Ekitike's signing at that price after it looked last week for a brief moment like Isak would be joining. But I've long since learned that Michael Edwards and FSG are entirely trustworthy when it comes to signing players and you can count the number of flops they've signed on one hand.

Liverpool's interest in Alexander Isak was - or rather is - entirely genuine. Newcastle, at least publicly, have maintained the Sweden international simply isn't for sale.
But for Liverpool to have stepped up their efforts to land Isak in recent days suggests they have had some private encouragement to the contrary.
Even now their decision to focus on Hugo Ekitike has come to fruition, you can expect Liverpool's interest in Isak to remain.
The former Real Sociedad forward, as things stand, will enter the final two years of his contract next summer - a juncture at which Newcastle face significantly more jeopardy.
Of course, Liverpool may enter next summer's transfer window believing they don't require another centre-forward.
But if they do, Isak is unlikely to be too far away from their thoughts.

Ekitike to Liverpool - Last year we had a Slot Machine, this year it’s looking more like a whole arcade.

Hugo Ekitike's emergence as one of the continent's best young strikers has led to his value sky-rocketing.
Eintracht Frankfurt paid just £14m last summer for the forward's services and the Bundesliga side will be getting five times that in return.
Ekitike's 22 goals and 12 assists in 48 appearances for Frankfurt last season has been enough for the Premier League champions to take the plunge.

I think Ekitike is a good (not great) signing. I think this transfer window is not just about improving the first XI but about giving Slot tactical options and depth. So I hope we hang onto Darwin and that he comes good. A great chaos merchant in the dying minutes of close games. Gives Ekitike time to bed in as well. Exciting times.

I'm pleased with Liverpool's show of intent, it's a long time coming but I'm not sure about Ekitike at that price. I've only watched Youtube highlights but he looks raw and his decision making is off. We needed a Firmino/Isak/Berba but we've probably got a level below that; perhaps Crouch, no disrespect.

Liverpool have pipped Newcastle United to the signing of Hugo Ekitike, just as Paris St-Germain had done to the Magpies three years ago.
In January 2022, Newcastle looked to be in pole position to sign him, only for PSG to swoop and get his signature.
Speaking to Le Parisien on the transfer he said: “I don’t put aside everything Newcastle did to get me to come [to St James' Park].
“If I had to go abroad, I would have gone there, but when PSG wants you and you’re French, you can’t refuse.”

Loads more to come on Hugo Ekitike throughout the afternoon but what do you make of the signing?
If you're a Liverpool fan - how happy are you with this deal and the business you have done so far?
Neutrals - how do you think Ekitike will fare in the Premier League?
Have the Reds just stamped an exclamation mark next to their tag as favourites for next year's title?

Hugo Ekitike can play on his own at the front or in a front two, he can also drift to the wing.
The Eintracht Frankfurt forward excels in quick attacking transitions with his runs and his accuracy in dribbling with the ball at his feet.
He can also do well in tight areas when his team is playing against a low block and his height will come in handy for set pieces.
There is, though, a question mark around whether Ekitike will manage to up his goals and assists and find consistent high figures in this department; as well as if he can deploy an aggressive high-press style since he has not been exposed to that at Frankfurt.
However, he is a very exciting young French talent with huge potential to do very well in the Premier League.
Hugo Ekitike signed his first professional contract with Reims in 2020 at the age of 18 and during his time at the club spent half a season on loan at Vejle Boldklub in Denmark.
The following season he joined Paris St-Germain on a season-long loan, which was made a permanent move the following year and cost the French champions £30.6m.
Despite winning two league titles, he was loaned to Eintracht Frankfurt in January 2024 and the German club made his move permanent that summer.
Ekitike completed his first full season with Frankfurt in the 2024-25 campaign, scoring 22 goals and claiming 12 assists in 48 appearances, as they secured Champions League football with a third-placed finish in the Bundesliga.
