Carsley: "I'm really proud of the career I had with Ireland. The memories will go a long way. I made some great friends. But my coaching career took me to a path that has taken me to different jobs in different places."

On links to the Ireland job: "After the Euros I sat down with the FA's approval to speak to two or three people about different opportunities. It was very informal and went no further. I'm privileged to have this job."

  3. 'A hostile atmosphere'published at 19:54 British Summer Time 6 September 2024

England captain Harry Kane: We know it will be a hostile atmosphere. Jack Grealish and Declan Rice might get some stick but they made decisions on what they thought would be best for their career.

  4. Postpublished at 19:54 British Summer Time 6 September 2024

Carsley on what to expect from new Ireland manager: "I'm not sure. We've spoken about potentially what we could come up against. We watched a few recent Jamaica games to see how they could play. They have some good players. It's important we approach the game with respect. We expect it to be energetic, high tempo. They'll be well coached and motivated."

  5. Postpublished at 19:52 British Summer Time 6 September 2024

Carsley on his Ireland highlights: "I can remember a few lowlights. My debut against Romania, good memories. Waterlogged, the wind was blowing. The pitch was horrendous. It was like Hagi had flip flops on, he was so smooth."

  6. Postpublished at 19:51 British Summer Time 6 September 2024

Carsley asked about Mason Greenwood: "He wasn't a player we considered. I'm aware of how he's doing but he wasn't under consideration."

  7. Postpublished at 19:50 British Summer Time 6 September 2024

Carsley on playing his former national team: "It's not something I've thought much about until recently. When I saw the draw I was fully focused on the u21s. I didn't realise I was going to be here. I'm excited by it. I've got a lot of confidence in the players. They'll enjoy the atmosphere. It's a good game to come to after the disappointment.

"I try not to get too emotional in games. I've always been the same. It's just the way I am. I'm respectful with my history."

On Irish friends: "They're really supportive and proud of the position I've got to. It's something I'm proud of."

  8. 'My first time playing Ireland'published at 19:49 British Summer Time 6 September 2024

England captain Harry Kane: My grandparents were born in Ireland, so I have some extended family in Ireland I am sure they will be watching in the pubs.

It will be a great game and is my first time playing Ireland.

  9. Postpublished at 19:47 British Summer Time 6 September 2024

Carsley: "I definitely don't see this as a new start. I've talked about taking over a team as a caretaker manager low on confidence, low down the league, struggling. This is the opposite. This is a team coming on the back of a tournament. Qualifying is an achievement and to get so close, I don't see this as a fresh start, It's a chance to build on what they've done in the past.

"I believe we're in a strong position. They were in a low position when Gareth Southgate took over. It's totally different now. They're used to competing. Standards are so high. Hopefully they can go that one step further. That last push is the hardest thing."

  10. 'Doing a lot of things right'published at 19:47 British Summer Time 6 September 2024

    England captain Harry Kane:

To get to two finals in four years means you are doing a lot of things right.

But the boss has come in to give us new ideas. There is always room for improvement. Now it is about trying to implement that.

I am excited about that opportunity.

  11. Postpublished at 19:44 British Summer Time 6 September 2024

Carsley: "We've tried to get three or four different ways of playing. We have to play to players' strengths. It's not about my style or way of playing.

"Coaching is about utilising players' ability. Hopefully we see that tomorrow."

  12. 'Our task is to get better'published at 19:44 British Summer Time 6 September 2024

England captain Harry Kane: We did extremely well to get to the final. I don't think we reached the levels we know we can.

Whenever it ends in defeat, you are back into your own life and back for the new season. As a team a lot of positives from the summer but it is about improving and a lot of areas we can improve.

Our task is to get better. When you get so close to reaching pinnacle of career, it is really difficult. It just makes me more motivated and puts the fire in the belly to get there again and have a different outcome.

Gareth was a big part of my career and all we can say is thankyou and we look forward to another chapter.

I have been playing nine years for England and I still remember my first camp. It is great to see the youngsters train with that freedom. You want to see players pushing you like that.

  13. Postpublished at 19:41 British Summer Time 6 September 2024

Carsley on Jack Grealish and Declan Rice: "We spoke about the atmosphere we expect to be exciting, passionate and loud. What players are used to from the Premier League.

"They'll be ready for whatever happens."

On the reception he will get: "I'm not sure. Probably the same. If the reception we had outside is anything to go by it'll be positive."

  14. 'Exciting chapter'published at 19:39 British Summer Time 6 September 2024

England captain Harry Kane: "It was strange when first in camp, but the new boss has his ideas and identity. We did a lot of good things with Gareth but a new coach has new ideas and fresh ideas. It has been good.

"A lot of new faces, young players, excited to be here. Another exciting chapter in my England career."

  15. Postpublished at 19:39 British Summer Time 6 September 2024

England interim boss Lee Carsley: "Feels good. Only been here an hour and a half. It's been good. We had a brilliant reception from a lot of kids waiting outside.

"There's a good atmosphere or the anticiaption of the game.

"We spoke a bit this week about performing. If you focus on results you can get carried away. We've spoken about control. We've had three days training and the players have been so receptive.

"I've been really impressed by the players."

There was quite the welcoming committee for England's players when they arrived at their hotel about 50 minutes ago.

There were dozens of fans waiting for them and they certainly made a noise as Lee Carsley and his team made their way inside.

The team is staying about 30 kilometres outside Dublin.

Players signed shirts and autographs for the waiting fans before heading off for food.
