As well as Ederson, Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen also created a goal over the weekend as his long ball set up Kaoru Mitoma for his opening goal against Chelsea on Friday night.

With assists for him and Ederson at the weekend, it means Premier League goalkeepers have created seven league goals this season - just one assist behind the competition record for a single season of eight (1992-93 and 2007-08).

From one impressive goalkeeping display to another...

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson set a number of records during City's 4-0 win over Newcastle at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

His assist for Omar Marmoush's first goal in the game made him the first goalkeeper in Premier League history to record three assists in a single season.

He also moved top of the all-time assists leaderboard for goalkeepers in the league, with six in the competition's history.

Ederson's three assists have come from three key passes this season, meaning every chance he has directly created has led to a goal.

If Ipswich perform with the same character and never-say-die attitude they showed against Villa on Saturday, coupled with a hopefully now reliable keeper, we just might stay up. Think with Palmer in from the start we’d been at least six points better off.

Ipswich defended in numbers to hold on to their point at Aston Villa and goalkeeper Alex Palmer - making his Premier League debut at 28 - produced several superb saves to preserve the point.

The February signing parried a curling Marcus Rashford drive wide of the far post, before preventing a Morgan Rogers header from nestling in the back of the net.

With games against Tottenham and Manchester United to come in February, Saturday's impressive draw could provide the confidence boost Ipswich need to pick up further precious points in their battle for survival.

Relegation strugglers Ipswich Town closed the gap to Wolves with a battling performance to hold Aston Villa to a Premier League draw at Villa Park on Saturday, despite playing nearly an hour with 10 men.

A largely uneventful first half was brought to life when Ipswich's Axel Tuanzebe brought down Jacob Ramsey on the edge of the penalty area, earning the former Villa defender a second yellow card.

The visitors had defended well up to that point and had to survive heavy pressure early in the second half, but they stunned Villa Park when Liam Delap beat Axel Disasi to Omari Hutchinson's low cross and steered the ball into the far corner.

Amid growing exasperation among the Villa supporters, Ollie Watkins equalised from close range after half-time substitute Marcus Rashford had rattled the crossbar from a free-kick.

Fellow February arrival Marco Asensio blazed over the bar from an excellent position before forcing Ipswich goalkeeper Alex Palmer into a superb one-handed save as Villa pushed for a winner.

Glynn, Hertfordshire: Hi Phil, as a Wolves supporter I'm finding the relegation run-in uncomfortably close. Who are you backing to escape the drop, and is there too big a gap above Wolves for another team to get pulled into the mix before the season is out?

Phil: Not sure whether this is good or bad news, Glynn, but I think Wolves will escape the drop and Leicester City, Ipswich Town and Southampton will go down.

I think Wolves have enough talent and fight, as they showed at Liverpool yesterday, as well as an outstanding striker in Matheus Cunha. I really think they will stay up. You can never tell, but I think the gap that currently exists will stop another club from getting pulled in. I think it’s three from those four – with Wolves to stay up.

'We must play first half like the second' - Pereira

Wolves boss Vitor Pereira said that his players woke up at half-time to take the game to Liverpool in the second period.

"We woke up at half time and played a game not afraid, to play, press and create problems. Even the best players in the world, if you press them they make mistakes. This what we need to do in the future, not in one half but in two halves, he told BBC Match of the Day.

"The first half was a lot of respect, too much respect. We cannot play football this way," he added on Sky Sports.

Wolves generated an expected goals (xG) of 1.11 in the second half from 10 shots. They had 12 touches in the opposition box, compared to Liverpool's paltry three.

It did seem to be a struggle to get over the line for Liverpool, but these matches will happen.

Wolves have got so much to play for at the bottom of the table, it does look like it’s going to be three from four to be relegated at the end of the season.

Liverpool have got some challenges, they’ve got to go to Aston Villa on Wednesday but they’ve got a nice cushion.

The disciplinary charge does not come at a great time for Arne Slot, with his Liverpool side facing mounting pressure in their Premier League title push.

They were made to work hard for Sunday's 2-1 win at home to Wolves, which re-established their seven-point lead over second-placed Arsenal at the top of the table.

However, Premier League history is on their side.

Liverpool are just the seventh team to collect 60 points after 25 games (while eight teams have had more). Of the previous six to have 60 points at this stage, three went on to lift the title.

The Reds are also the third team to have a seven-point lead at this stage, after Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United in 1993-94 and Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea in 2014-15 - both went on to win the title.

  12. What is the charge against Slot & how will disciplinary hearing work?published at 14:38 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February

    Nick Mashiter
    BBC Sport football news reporter

The charge against Arne Slot is being treated as 'non standard', which means the Liverpool manager does not have the opportunity to accept a set sanction without a hearing.

There has to be a hearing, which will either determine the punishment or for Slot to deny the charge. If he denies it, it is then up to a commission to decide whether to uphold the charge and what the level of punishment would be.

After Slot has responded to the charge by Wednesday, the Football Association has three days to go back to club and a hearing will then be heard within 10 days.

Non-standard is for slightly unusual or prolonged incidents when there has been similar behaviour in the last 12 months, in this instance it could be because of the nature of behaviour or the comments made.

Slot has already served a touchline ban this season, in the Carabao Cup quarter final win at Southampton in December, after collecting three yellow cards.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot will continue to be on the touchline until the outcome of his Football Association charge - meaning he could still be in the dugout to face Aston Villa and Manchester City this week.

The Dutchman has until Wednesday to respond after being charged with having "acted in an improper manner and/or used insulting and/or abusive words and/or behaviour" towards referee Michael Oliver.

It came after James Tarkowski's stoppage-time leveller in the 2-2 draw at Everton on Wednesday last week, with assistant Sipke Hulshoff also facing a similar charge.

Liverpool go to Villa on Wednesday, meaning Slot is due to be in the dugout at Villa Park.

It is also likely he will be on the touchline for the Premier League leaders' trip to the Etihad on Sunday - unless the process is fast-tracked.

Over in Italy, defending Serie A champions Inter Milan missed the chance to go top as they fell to a 1-0 defeat at Juventus on Sunday.

After leaders Napoli were held to a 2-2 draw at Lazio on Saturday, a victory would have moved Simone Inzaghi's side top for the first time since September.

But Francisco Conceicao's 74th-minute goal proved decisive in Turin to leave Inter two points behind 2022-23 champions Napoli.

Atalanta are three points further back in third after their goalless draw against Cagliari, while Juventus climbed above Lazio and back into the top four on goal difference.

While it was only Inter's third defeat of the campaign, it was their second loss in three games.

Former Tottenham midfielder Nabil Bentaleb scored in Lille's 2-0 win at Rennes on Sunday in his first match since suffering a cardiac arrest last year.

The 30-year-old was told his career might be over but was cleared to return by the French Football Federation on Wednesday and scored just four minutes after coming on in the second half.

He celebrated by running to the Lille bench, where he was mobbed by his team-mates and coaching staff.

"It's worthy of a film. He deserved it, because I don't believe in luck, he believed in himself," said Lille boss Bruno Genesio.

Former Arsenal forward Chuba Akpom sealed the win late on to lift Lille up to fifth in Ligue 1.

Elsewhere in La Liga, Manchester United forward Antony continued his fine form on loan at Real Betis.

Antony's brilliantly executed volley in a 3-0 win over Real Sociedad was his third goal in four appearances since joining the club in January.

It is as many as he had managed in his previous 30 games for United in all competitions before that run.

United, meanwhile, have scored once in three Premier League games since letting the Brazilian winger leave on loan until the end of the season.

The 24-year-old also assisted Marc Roca for Betis' third goal on Sunday.

United sources say Betis are covering 84% of his salary - over £100,000 per week.

The tie is 'very clearly' in Real Madrid's 'favour'published at 14:23 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February

    Phil McNulty Q&A

Anon: Hello, Phil. My question to you is what do you think about Manchester City's match-up with Real Madrid and the effect Gonzalez will have on the game? Predictions?

Phil: I’ll be in Madrid for this one and am really looking forward to it, although the tie is very clearly in Real’s favour after their win at Manchester City in the first leg. City manager Pep Guardiola was very impressed with the player he called “mini Rodri” in Saturday’s 4-0 win over Newcastle United and I think he will be vital in the Bernabeu. He gave City some of the midfield control that has been sorely missing – and they will certainly need that on Wednesday. Big night for City. And a very big job to over-turn that first leg deficit. Prediction? Real Madrid to go through. Sorry.

Jude Bellingham was "disrespectful" after he was sent off for dissent during Real Madrid's draw with Osasuna, said Barcelona boss Hansi Flick.

Bellingham was shown a straight red for something he was adjudged to have said to referee Jose Luis Munuera Montero.

The 21-year-old later said the incident was a "misunderstanding" and he did not insult the referee.

Asked for his reaction to the incident, Flick said: "It is disrespectful but I'm not the one who should comment on it.

"Why waste time and energy arguing with the referee regarding the decisions he makes? There is a player, who is the captain, who has the right to argue with the referee.

"I don't like the behaviour I saw. It's a weakness when you get a red card."

Carlo Ancelotti's side are top of La Liga, with a one-point lead over city rivals Atletico, while Barca can return to the top on goal difference with a victory at home to Rayo Vallecano tonight.

Spanish club Villarreal have condemned the attack of two disabled supporters outside the club's ground following Saturday's La Liga match against Valencia.

The fans were attacked outside the Estadio de la Ceramica after the two teams played out a 1-1 draw.

One of the supporters attacked plays for Villarreal's EDI team which is a team for players with intellectual disabilities. They spent the night under observation to "undergo tests for contusions".

The other supporter suffered "a complete maxillofacial fracture" [a fracture of a facial bone] and was taken to Castellon General Hospital where they remain.

In a statement, the club said: "Villarreal CF would like to reiterate the club's absolute condemnation and utmost repudiation of any act of violence in any form, which has no place in football and society."
