Congratulations Scotland! However, when are we going to talk about that Cymru performance last night? Absolutely blew North Macedonia away, a team that had only conceded three goals during qualifying up until last night!

  5. Super Scott for club and countrypublished at 10:29 GMT

    Scotland 4-2 Denmark

    Sophie Brown
    BBC Sport

There have been a lot of column inches about Scott McTominay’s transformation into one of the best attacking midfielders in Europe since his move from Manchester United to Napoli – but the Scot has been producing on the international stage as well.

McTominay’s first goal for Scotland didn’t come until his 27th cap, his second didn’t come until his 37th appearance but since then he has averaged roughly a goal every 2½ games.

His sensational strike that opened the scoring for Scotland against Denmark last night was his 14th for his country. Since the start of 2023, the 28-year-old has been involved in 15 goals for Scotland, six more than any of his teammates, and he has scored more than twice as many as any of them.

His international form in some senses mirrors his club form, which saw him win Serie A Player of the Year – and a Ballon d’Or nomination – as he helped Napoli claim the 2024-25 league title.

In the final match of the season, it was his spectacular scissor-kick volley that set Napoli on their way to clinch Lo Scudetto. And in the final match of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, he produced another stunning overhead kick to put Scotland on the road to America.

    John Collins
Former Scotland midfielder on BBC 5 Live

They worked their socks off, got a few breaks, and scored three incredible goals that will never be forgotten.

The first one is the best overhead kick I have ever seen. You practice free kicks, shooting, but not overhead kicks. I never scored one, never attempted one, few players do as it's such a difficult thing. What a time to get it right, a perfect execution.

For him to think that at that moment in time, and to hit it to perfection - it was written in the stars that we would qualify.

Scott McTominay's overhead kick even received a nod of approval from Scottish royalty, Sir Andy Murray.

The former tennis world number one took to X immediately after McTominay had given Scotland the lead to show his appreciation for the strike.

Just a word on Mctominay’s goal. To stay in the air that long and score was incredible, but some credit has to go to Gannon-Doak for how great that cross was for an attempt like that. Hope he recovers soon and Scotland “Fry America’s bagels”.

  12. Was McTominay overhead kick not even Scotland's best goal of the night?published at 10:02 GMT

    Scotland 4-2 Denmark

"Scott McTominay scored the best overhead kick I've ever seen and it might not have been the best goal of the night."

The words of Scotland head coach Steve Clarke, talking about what might quite literally be the high point of the Napoli midfielder's career.

Just three minutes into the decisive World Cup qualifier against Denmark, McTominay leapt and with him, almost lifted Hampden from its very soil in the south side of Glasgow. But there was more to come.

No Scotland fan would have believed that further incredible goals would come over the next 95 minutes. Yet with so much on the line, this team scored three of the best goals in their 153-year footballing history.

Archie Gemmill against the Netherlands in 1978, James McFadden against France in 2007, and Shaun Maloney against Ireland seven years later all now have serious competition.

Scott McTominay scored one of the greatest goals Hampden Park has ever seen and yet the goals that followed means there is an actual debate around whether it was even the best goal on the night.

Shall we deep-dive them all and show the clips? I think we ought to.

    Nicky Campbell
    BBC Radio 5Live

Scotland fans have been calling in to Nicky Campbell's BBC 5 Live show this morning, with their experiences of watching that incredible match last night...

Jenna: "It's not sunk in yet. Once I came home after watching the game, I put the highlights on. I can't believe it happened.

"I'm only 23, I wasn't even born the last time they qualified for a World Cup. As soon as that Tierney goal went in, I was looking at the prices of flights to Toronto."

Abby: "I'm still on a high from last night. I'm 26, last time Scotland were at a World Cup my mum was pregnant with me. I watched the game with mum and dad, and afterwards me and dad sat and watched the goals over and over again.

"After watching the women reach the World Cup in 2019, I have been waiting for this moment with the men's team."
