Newcastle will be kicking off their defence at home to League One table-toppers Bradford City on Wednesday.

We will be hearing from Howe in his pre-match news conference from around 09:30 BST.

  5. Good morningpublished at 08:29 BST 23 September

It's that time of the season when we seem to be hopping from one competition to another, from one week to the next.

This week the Premier League's heavyweights join the Carabao Cup at the third-round stage.

Ties have been split, with those top-tier sides involved in the Europa League and Conference League playing last week.

Of those, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa, who kick off their European campaigns later this week, made an early exit from the EFL Cup.

Meanwhile, Manchester United's conquerors Grimsby Town marched on into the last 16.

But who will join them in the draw?
