Jack Marriott celebrates his third goal of the season for Wrexham

Wrexham eased to victory in their early-season League One derby against Shrewsbury Town to take over at the top of the table.

The hosts were 2-0 up at the break with Ollie Palmer scoring the opener after James McLean's low cross found him unmarked.

Elliott Lee added the second after Ryan Barnett's drive gave him the chance to hit home with a low shot from 20 yards out.

Wrexham's solid defence was also a strong feature of this early-season derby. But at the other end Aristote Nsiala's lofted clearance prompted goalkeeper Toby Savin to race out of his area, Jack Marriott made no mistake with the opportunity.

Defeat sent Shrewsbury into the relegation zone.

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson:

"I thought it was a really good performance from us today.

"We wanted intensity with and without the ball.

"For nearly all the game, we were dominant. There was this period after that first goal where we gave too many free kicks away, we invited the ball into our box.

"Some of them were decisions by the ref we probably didn't agree with, but we just had to keep a little bit cooler when we're out of possession, but once we came through that period, I thought we're excellent."
