    Alexander IsakImage source, Getty Images

Good players fit in. With Isak he has shown what a top player he is, and I already have Liverpool as favourites to win the title this year but if he comes in then I think they are going to be unstoppable.

I think it is a huge blow to Newcastle. Over the last few years they have done everything right, they have not gone over PSR rules, they have done everything within the rules, but for Isak to leave, if that happens it would be a massive setback.

They are trying to build a squad that is ready to compete for the Premier League and in the Champions League as well and if Isak leaves players will look at that and think, “if the best players are leaving, is that somewhere I want to go?”

Newcastle will do everything to try and keep him but on the other hand if might free up money to bring in more players and strengthen the squad.

'No repeat of one-team title race'published at 12:16 British Summer Time 14 August

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

James, Hornsea: Phil - are you not worried about the number of changes to the Liverpool squad? Looked against Palace like it could take some time to adjust? Could that be too late to win the title?

Morning, James. I’ve had a few Liverpool fans express these concerns to me and they certainly looked a work in progress against Crystal Palace.

It will take time for Arne Slot to bed in so many signings, but I genuinely feel that when it all settles down (and I think it will quickly) Liverpool will be the team to beat.

There is no doubt, though, that there has been some serious strengthening elsewhere and I do not see a repeat of last season’s one-team title race.

Nottingham Forest are in advanced talks with Rennes for striker Arnaud Kalimuendo, sources have told BBC Sport.

The forward scored 18 times as Rennes finished 12th in Ligue 1 last season.

Forest are preparing for the Europa League, having been promoted into the competition following Crystal Palace’s demotion to the Europa Conference League, and Nuno Espírito Santo needs a deeper squad.

Igor Jesus has already joined from Botafogo for £10m as Forest look to ease the burden on Chris Wood after he scored 20 goals last season.

Kalimuendo, 23, started his career at Paris St-Germain and scored 42 times in 105 games for Rennes since joining in 2022.

He also won silver with France at the Paris Olympics last year

  6. 'Pressure is on Arteta'published at 11:58 British Summer Time 14 August

    Julien Laurens
European football expert on BBC One

I would say it is more of a demand from everybody around Arsenal, from the ownership, the players, the staff, Mikel Arteta, the fans.

That culture of every detail counts to go and win the title. I agree that they will be there or there abouts, they have improved in the Champions League from quarter-finalists to semi-finalists and pushed PSG close over both games, so there have been improvements.

But the pressure is on Mikel Arteta. He has been backed again, £200m spend, a lot of money spent last summer too, so this time they will have to show for it.

Arsenal's 'squad is certainly better'published at 11:52 British Summer Time 14 August

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Olly, Surrey: Phil's prediction for Arsenal is interesting. They've come second the past three years 'without a striker' but now has enough to mount a meaningful challenge - like they haven't done for the last three years? Last season they had injuries, but surely the squad is now even better?

Hi, Olly. The squad is certainly better and at last, at least 12 months too late, Arsenal finally have their striker in Viktor Gyokores. Martin Zubimendi is also a class act.

And I agree this is the season when Arteta and Arsenal simply must mount a very serious title challenge, but my doubt is whether they will finish above Liverpool.

McNulty Q&A: Slot 'still working' to integrate 'high-class' signingspublished at 11:38 British Summer Time 14 August

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Mike, Bristol: Phil. Saying you can’t see past Liverpool winning the league. Watching different pre-season games to us? I think they look delicate at the moment. Palace schooled them.

Hello, Mike. Not sure Palace “schooled” Liverpool but I take your point that they looked vulnerable without the defensive midfield presence of Ryan Gravenberch.

Let’s remember the season hasn’t even started yet and Arne Slot is still working on how best to integrate some very high-class summer acquisitions.

It will take a little time and there may be bumps on the road but once the season settles down and Slot has formulated his best plans, I genuinely cannot see past Liverpool retaining their title.

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

    ArsenalImage source, Getty Images

This is the acid test for Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta. No more talk of process and progress. It is time for actual silverware after five years without a trophy.

This time, Arteta has been given all the required tools to do the job - an already talented squad bolstered by the class of Spain midfielder Martin Zubimendi and - at long last and at least 12 months too late - a recognised striker in Viktor Gyokeres.

This is a team with enough to mount a meaningful title pursuit and challenge for the biggest prizes.

This time Arsenal and Arteta have no excuses. They must win a trophy this season - and there should be optimism at the Emirates Stadium that they can do so.

  14. Leeds target another strikerpublished at 11:08 British Summer Time 14 August

    Nick Mashiter
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Leeds are tracking Panathinaikos striker Fotis Ioannidis as they look to bolster their strikeforce.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is due to complete a free transfer to Elland Road but Daniel Farke still wants to add more firepower.

Ioannidis has 48 goals in 168 appearances for Panathinaikos and has scored six times in 17 caps for Greece.

The 25-year-old interested Ipswich last summer while Sporting Lisbon and Porto remain keen.

Leeds also retain an interest in Norwich forward Josh Sargent, who Farke brought to Carrow Road, but he is not a priority as it stands.

Patrick Bamford has been told he has no future under Farke while fellow striker Mateo Joseph joined Mallorca on loan earlier this month, leaving Leeds short up front.

Leeds start their Premier League campaign at home to Everton on Monday.

It's hard to see past Liverpool as this season's Premier League champions.

This is a team that won the title at a 10-point canter last term and has been strengthened by a remarkable summer spending spree. The transition is still a work in progress, as the Community Shield loss to Crystal Palace proved, but this a prediction made with complete confidence.

What should have been a summer of joy has lived under the shadow of the tragic death of beloved striker Diogo Jota - killed in a car crash - as well as the incident that left supporters injured at the title trophy parade.

The season will start without the departed Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez, but Florian Wirtz was a statement signing - one of Europe's most coveted forwards - at £116m from Bayer Leverkusen, along with full-backs Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez. New striker Hugo Ekitike, signed for an initial £69m from Eintracht Frankfurt, showed his class with a goal in the Community Shield.

Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi is the latest target, and Newcastle United's Alexander Isak may yet arrive - a frightening prospect for anyone wanting to take Liverpool's title away.
