    FT: Celtic 1-2 Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich have got a huge game away to Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, so they can't go resting any tired legs.

They do have a pretty handy squad though, with guys like Thomas Muller, Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry coming off the bench this evening. They also have first choice centre-half Kim Min-jae to come back.

Celtic have lost but look they are still in the tie which is what Brendan Rodgers wanted. They will take heart from the way they finished.

Make no mistake, it is still going to be a tall order for them to go to Munich and get something but, the way it was looking when Harry Kane put Bayern 2-0 up, you feared they would end up getting an absolute thumping.

That wasn’t the case and fair play to the players for sticking at it.

  3. 'Let's go and have no regrets'published at 22:32 Greenwich Mean Time

    FT: Celtic 1-2 Bayern Munich

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers tells TNT Sports: "The last 25 minutes, we started to press the game, we were more active at the top end of the pitch and you see what it brought - aggression. Our football starts to come alive and then we get the goal.

"At 2-1, Bayern Munich are hanging on. That's what we can take from it. We've got one more shot. It's a new level for a lot of the players, they've done absolutely great. Let's go and have no regrets and see where it takes us.

"We've shown we can play football and be a threat. We're still right in the tie. With their quality and the number of goals they can score, sometimes these can be out of sight but that wasn't the case at all."

  7. 'We scored at the right times'published at 22:21 Greenwich Mean Time

    FT: Celtic 1-2 Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane tells TNT Sports: "[Our performance] was okay. Whenever you win a game like this, you're always pleased because it's not an easy place to come.

"There were definitely areas in the game in which we could have done better and we'll need to improve for next week, but overall we scored at the right times.

"They put us under pressure at the end and we had to stay strong, which we did.

"We knew the atmosphere would help them at the start of the game, and they nearly scored after a minute. We had to be patient, we knew we'd have more of the ball. Sometimes you need a bit of special quality to open a game like this up."

In years gone by, that could have been a totally different story. The reaction was superb.

Towards the end, Celtic looked the better side. They looked more threatening and Bayern lost all the control they had.

Celtic coming back with that belief, energy and intent is a warning to Bayern. Listen, it's not over. It's highly unlikely, but Bayern have work to do next week.

Celtic finished the stronger team. It took until after Bayern eased off after scoring their second goal but Celtic showed their resilience and ended up taking the game to them - they were much braver in the final third in the closing stages.

Benfica took control of their Champions League play-off with an away win against a Monaco side that had to play most of the second half with only 10 men.

The visitors went ahead thanks to a superb chipped finish from a tight angle by Vangelis Pavlidis after only three minutes following the restart.

Minutes later, the hosts were reduced to 10 men as Al Musrati, on his Champions League debut, was shown a second yellow card. He had tried to get Benfica's Alvaro Carreras booked for a challenge, but was instead himself shown a yellow card and then a red.

Feyenoord also gained a 1-0 first-leg win thanks to an early goal from Igor Paixao's 20-yard shot, which Mike Maignan in the AC Milan goal should have saved.

In the earlier match, Club Bruges scored a 94th-minute winning penalty to secure a 2-1 victory at home against Atalanta.

All of these second legs take place on Tuesday with the overall winners moving into the last 16.

Brendan Rodgers was on the pitch to congratulate his players at the end of the match and rightly so.

Celtic were a real threat at the end. Maeda chased down every ball and rushed them. They showed they can compete against a top team.

I know one was away and one was at home, but compare Celtic's strength under pressure tonight to their desperate vulnerability when routed by Dortmund earlier in the campaign.

Unless something truly spectacular happens in the second leg then they are going out of the Champions League but they're slowly but surely losing that soft touch aspect in their game that they had under Brendan Rodgers first time around and Ange Postecoglou.

They have a balance between discipline at the back and commitment to attack that works for them now. They've improved, no doubt about it. This was the ultimate test of that so far. Another massive one next week.

    Pat Nevin

I would say at 2-0 it was bordering on impossible but at 2-1 there's a chance. It's a very, very slim chance but the spirit that Celtic showed in the last 15 minutes will stand them in good stead for the second-leg.

  17. Postpublished at 21:59 Greenwich Mean Time

    FT: Celtic 1-2 Bayern Munich

The Celtic response from 2-0 down was impressive but they gave themselves too much to do.

The big frustration will be that Harry Kane goal. The England captain was completely unmarked from a corner and he wasn't going to pass up a gift like that.
