Match Facts
Borussia Dortmund and Lille will meet for just the third time in European competition, following a pair of draws in the last 16 of the UEFA Cup in 2001-02 (1-1 on aggregate, with Dortmund progressing on away goals).
Borussia Dortmund have only progressed from one of their previous four knockout stage ties against French sides in European competition – that one progression did come last season, however, eliminating Paris SG in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals with 1-0 victories home and away (2-0 on aggregate).
This will be Lille’s first knockout stage match against a German side in European competition since the 2002 UEFA Intertoto Cup final, where they lost 1-2 on aggregate to Stuttgart (won 1-0 at home, lost 0-2 away).
Lille have only won two of their 11 overall meetings with German sides in European competition (D4 L5), although one of those victories did come in the most recent one – 3-1 away to Wolfsburg in the UEFA Champions League in December 2021.
Borussia Dortmund have only lost one of their last 16 home matches in the UEFA Champions League (W10 D5), with that lone defeat coming against Barcelona last December (2-3). They’re also unbeaten in their last five home games in the knockout stages of the competition (W4 D1), keeping clean sheets in four of those.
Lille have the best shot conversion rate of any team in the UEFA Champions League this season, netting with 22.7% of their attempts (17/75). Indeed, only Feyenoord (+8.7) have a bigger positive differential between goals and Expected Goals than Lille this term (+7.4 – 17 goals from 9.6 xG).
Julian Brandt has assisted five goals in the UEFA Champions League this season; the joint-most by any player. The only Dortmund player to provide more in a single edition in the competition is Ousmane Dembélé, who set up six goals in 2016-17.
Jonathan David has netted six goals in eight appearances in the UEFA Champions League this season. Meanwhile, if he scores in this game, he’ll become Lille’s all-time top scorer in major European competition, overtaking Yusuf Yazici (both on 12).
Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck is the only player to have completed 100+ forward passes while under high-intensity pressure in the UEFA Champions League this season (119). Indeed, he has also made more line-breaking passes (170) than any other defender in the competition in 2024-25.
Based on the quality of shots on target faced (using xG), Lille’s Lucas Chevalier has prevented the third-most goals of any goalkeeper in the UEFA Champions League this season (+3.8 – 10 conceded from 13.8 xG on target). Chevalier is also the youngest goalkeeper remaining in the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League who already made an appearance (23y 118d on the day of this game).
