Postecoglou says he used to act as a chauffeur and interpreter to Puskas

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou spoke about his "special connection" with Hungarian great Ferenc Puskas before his side play Ferencvaros in the Europa League on Thursday (17:45 BST).

Postecoglou played under former forward Puskas, who won the European Cup three times with Real Madrid, when he was the manager of South Melbourne in Australia.

The Spurs boss has previously said, external he used to act as a chauffeur and interpreter to Puskas, who died in 2006, during their time together.

"I do have a special connection, for me anyway, with Mr Puskas," said Postecoglou.

"I was blessed to be able to spend three years in the company of one of the greatest footballers of all time, but more importantly for me an outstanding person.

"He was one of the greatest people I've ever come across and I feel really fortunate to have had those three years with him, where I was able to sit there and talk to a person who in the football world had done everything, but more importantly, a person who I had so much respect and admiration for.

"I still think about it and it still feels unreal to me that I got that opportunity being based in Australia. As you get older you keep those experiences even more.

"I would love for him to still be around today to see where I am because he played a role in me becoming certainly the football manager I am. He played a role in that but also the person I've become."

Spurs beat Manchester United 3-0 on Sunday without injured forward Son Heung-Min and he has not travelled to Hungary because he is "back in London doing rehab".

Defender Destiny Udogie has also not travelled with the team but his issue is "nothing significant".

Tottenham playmaker James Maddison will be hoping to impress as he tries to get back into the England squad.

Maddison missed out on being selected for Euro 2024 under former England boss Gareth Southgate but hopes for a return under interim manager Lee Carsley, who will name his squad on Thursday prior to games against Greece and Finland this month.

"I want to be in the squad. It's simple, every England player will tell you that," said Maddison.

"I know Lee Carsley, I worked with him at Coventry. He was my assistant with the England Under-21s under Aidy Boothroyd.

"I feel really good at the minute. I feel as fit as I've ever felt, really. I feel like my fitness is at an optimum level.

"Having a break over the summer, not going to the Euros, it does help."
