Jon Russell gave Barnsley the lead over Rotherham following a corner

Barnsley moved up to fourth in League One after a home win over South Yorkshire rivals Rotherham, who are now winless against the Tykes since 1982.

Jon Russell opened the scoring before Stephen Humphrys came off the bench to double the lead late on.

Joe Rafferty struck a fierce effort goalwards inside three minutes for the Millers, but an onrush of Barnsley defenders were able to block.

The hosts took the lead after 32 minutes through Russell.

After Cameron Dawson pulled off a spectacular save to deny his headed effort, he pounced on the loose ball and made no mistake to give his side the advantage.

It looked as though Rotherham were going to level with 18 minutes to play when Jack Holmes was found at the back post, but Barnsley goalkeeper Ben Killip recovered well to keep a close-range effort out.

Humphrys added a second for the Tykes with four minutes remaining when he found himself behind the last line of Rotherham defence and smashed into the bottom right corner from outside the box.

'We want more nights like that' - reaction

Barnsley boss Darrell Clarke told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"I'm really pleased for our home fans. We put on a performance our home fans could enjoy, and three points, which is key.

"We needed that second goal, we had a great chance before half-time with Davis Keillor-Dunn but we played some decent football at times and we defended our box pretty well.

"A lot has been said about our home form and that's an area where the results have to improve but tonight is a stepping stone towards that.

"The fans enjoyed the performance, they enjoyed the night, and that's what derbies are about. We want more nights like that, whether they are derbies or not."

Rotherham boss Steve Evans told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"We started the game really well and were the better side for the first 20 minutes, we were pressing them, we were being creative and getting into the final third with ease. But it's almost like a switch and we conceded a goal from a set play.

"From then on to half-time it was difficult or us. We changed a few things at half-time to get some width and pace on the pitch and we were really good for 15 minutes.

"But goals change games and we missed a huge chance. I don't think the keeper knows anything about it but we should score.

"And then we've got into a bit of a groundhog situation trying to create something, then there's a defensive mistake, but it was a really good finish. From then on we were chasing shadows."
