Christian Pulisic hit the winner and Mike Maignan saved a second penalty as AC Milan beat rivals Inter to move into second place in Serie A.

After a lacklustre opening 45 minutes, the American found the opener from close range by capitalising on a Yann Sommer spill from an Alexis Saelemaekers shot.

But Inter were given the perfect opportunity to equalise when they were awarded a penalty kick 17 minutes from time when Strahinja Pavlovic was adjudged to have fouled Marcus Thuram after a VAR review.

Turkish midfielder Hakan Çalhanoglu stepped up from 12 yards against his former club but Frenchman Maignan guessed correctly to get a strong hand on a low effort to the bottom left-hand corner.

The 30-year-old ensured Milan were level at half-time by making a stunning save to deny Lautaro Martinez.

The victory takes Milan into second place, two points behind leaders Roma after their 3-1 win against Cremonese earlier on Sunday.

Inter are fourth, one point behind Milan and two behind Roma.
