Scotland's qualifying campaign ended with two defeats

Scotland Under-21s missed out on the 2025 European Championship play-offs after ending their qualifying campaign with defeat in Kazakhstan.

With Belgium losing at home to Hungary, victory would have taken Scot Gemmill's side up to second in Group B.

But a second straight loss for the Scots meant the Belgians will compete to join qualified leaders Spain at next year's finals in Slovakia.

Lyall Cameron threatened first when his low shot was turned on to the outside of the post.

Aybar Abdulla found space on the edge of the Scotland box and confidently swept a shot past Lewis Budinauckas for the opener on the half-hour mark.

Lennon Miller's free-kick was then pushed on to the crossbar just before the break and Dane Murray and Cameron were denied by goalkeeper Temirlan Anarbekov early in the second period.

But Miller found the net with a superb strike on the run following Max Johnston's low cross and moments later the Motherwell midfielder set up Dire Mebude to send an effort off the top of the bar.

That proved to be a turning point as Murray conceded a penalty and was sent off for felling Ivan Sviridov, Adilbek Zhumakhanov converting to put Kazakhstan back in front.

As Scotland toiled, Galymzhan Kenzhebek sent a bouncing effort narrowly wide of Budinauckas' goal and Yan Trufanov curled in the hosts' third.

Jeremiah Chilokoa-Mullen headed one back for Scotland from Miller's corner but they could not force an equaliser, with Cameron and substitute Rob Apter forcing saves from Anarbekov.
