Phil McNulty Q&A coming up - get your questions in

  1. Opta predicts Palace to finish in the top fivepublished at 10:28 BST

Look, I know it's only October but in the spirit of the questions Phil is being asked, let's turn to the Opta supercomputer which has kindly predicted where each side could finish.

Thomas Frank's strong start at Spurs sees the table give them a 9.83% chance of finishing in sixth and a 9.83% chance of seventh place.

As for high flying Crystal Palace, according to Opta, they could sneak in to the Champions League but that is if a fifth placed finish can secure a spot in the competition. They are in with an 11.98% chance of finishing in the top five.

So in the interest of predictions, do we think Crystal Palace could get Champions League football?

Thumbs up for yes, down for no.

  2. 'Top four may just be beyond Crystal Palace'published at 10:19 BST

Adrian: Hi Phil. Do you think Crystal Palace can make the top four or six? They played well for 65 minutes on Sunday and easily had enough chances to cement second place before tiring out to Everton’s pressure.

Morning, Adrian. Certainly the top six - top four may just be beyond them over the whole season.

I have been so impressed by them and I saw them deservedly beat Liverpool at Selhurst Park. They had such quality right through the team. And, you’re right, even David Moyes admitted Palace should have been out of sight before Everton came back at them on Sunday.

It will be interesting to see how they cope with the added strain of European football, but if you look at that team, with an outstanding leader in Oliver Glasner, then yes - they should be challenging for the top six.

  3. 'Tottenham should have sights firmly fixed on top six'published at 10:10 BST

Josh: Hello Phil! Spurs fan here. Do you believe Tottenham Hotspur can qualify for Champions league under Thomas Frank? It’s looking increasingly more likely that there is going to be a sixth Champions League spot, so I personally believe it is possible. What do you think?

Hi Josh. I think we have to remember where Spurs have come from. Remember they finished 17th last season, so it is quite a leap but I think the signs are really promising.

Thomas Frank is such a good appointment. I certainly think they should have their sights firmly fixed on the top six.

Frank Lampard's Coventry top of the Championship at Christmas?

Martin: Hi Phil. It’s early days, but how do you think the top six in the Championship will look by Christmas?

Hi Martin. The Championship is always an incredibly competitive division - one of the best around. I think Coventry City will be top under Frank Lampard, who is doing such a great job, and I think Middlesbrough and Leicester City will be right in there as well.

I can see Ipswich Town improving after their big win against Norwich City, while I always have a fancy for West Bromwich Albion.

After that, you look at how superbly Preston North End and Stoke City are doing, while QPR are also improving.

FYI - Coventry have set the record for the most goals scored in a Championship season after nine games. Just the 27 goals for Frank Lampard's side so far this campaign.

  7. Stones held in high regard by Englandpublished at 09:50 BST

John Stones made just 11 Premier League appearances last campaign because of foot and hamstring issues, the latter ending his season in February.

Injuries have prevented Stones from making more than 27 appearances in a single league campaign for City, who he joined from Everton in 2016.

The 31-year-old has represented England at five major tournaments, but has not played for the Three Lions since Thomas Tuchel took over as manager, with his last appearance coming in October 2024.

Tuchel said last week that no player is guaranteed a place in his England squad, and left out Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham and Jack Grealish.

Yet Stones' value to Tuchel became clear in June when, despite being injured, he was asked to join the squad in Spain for a warm-weather training camp.

  8. Injury made me 'think about retiring' - Stonespublished at 09:44 BST

John Stones on his injury problems: "Last season was tough for me, to the point where I thought about stopping.

"I didn't want to do it. I had had enough of being so professional and trying to do everything right in my power, to then keep breaking down and not having the answers. It was a very difficult place to be in.

"There comes a point where you don't know why it happens and it is even harder when you put in so much effort, or you are ultra professional, to be able to play and be available," Stones continued.

"When that time comes and something happens, it would be easier to say 'well I didn't do X, Y and Z that's why' - but when you do it, it's then mentally challenging. Hopefully I don't go back to that place."

"My emotions were high. I wasn't thinking straight. I don't think deep down I would have ever done it [retired]

"I said years ago when City wanted me to have a new challenge, I said 'I am going to fight'. That's all I have known since I was a kid - why should I stop that now?

  9. Tuchel's latest England squadpublished at 09:39 BST

Goalkeepers: Dean Henderson, Jordan Pickford, James Trafford.

Defenders: Dan Burn, Marc Guehi, Nico O'Reilly, Ezri Konsa, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Jarell Quansah, Djed Spence, John Stones.

Midfielders: Elliott Anderson, Morgan Gibbs-White, Jordan Henderson, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Declan Rice, Morgan Rogers.

Forwards: Jarrod Bowen, Eberechi Eze, Anthony Gordon, Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, Ollie Watkins.

*O'Reilly replaces Reece James who pulled out due to injury.

  10. Postpublished at 09:34 BST

Personally, it was a shock to see Phil Foden left out after his upturn in form while I can understand Jude Bellingham staying in Madrid. He's just returned from injury.

Is Jack Grealish more deserving of a place than Marcus Rashford? Probably.

  11. Tuchel leaves talented trio at homepublished at 09:28 BST

England v Wales (Thu, 19:45 BST)

The international break is rarely something to look forward to but England v Wales on Thursday night could be fun (for a friendly).

England are well on their way to qualifying for next year's World Cup but wll want to claim all the bragging rights against Wales in front of a sold-out Wembley.

But, they'll have to do it without the likes of Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Jack Grealish after Thomas Tuchel left them at home.

  12. The Premier League title racepublished at 09:24 BST

After Liverpool won five games on the spin, the Premier League title race seemed to be a foregone conclusion but that is now far from the case after two defeats in a row.

It is Arsenal who lead the way with Man City also pulling themselves back into the chat.

Or, with Bournemouth, Tottenham and Crystal Palace flying high, could we see a surprise winner?
