From the start it was frustrating, embarrassing, humiliating and pathetic. It was a game that has been in the making for a long time. If something is not working you change it. You do not plod on ignoring the reality of what is happening.

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast

In his [Lee Carsley's] interview after the game he looked very disappointed and down. He has got to regroup.

We have got another game, we are all flying out to Finland to watch England play again. There is definitely going to be a change - he is not going to do it again, let's put it that way.

There will be changes for sure. Defensively they were very poor last night. The ball was in the net five times for the Greeks, with three disallowed. Defensively they looked very tentative, which is not like them.

So it is one of those nights that you just write it off.

They are playing catch-up now. They have to beat the Greeks [in Greece]. Finishing top is paramount, otherwise you don't go up, and that would be almost a disaster for England.

Standard armchair over-reaction in full force. If we’re going to play more attacking football, it’s going to take time to adapt. Anyone involved in a Gareth love-in should check out his record in the Nations League.

England interim manager Lee Carsley on England's attacking options following the defeat to Greece: "I think it was a case of looking at something different.

"I think with the players we have got that is the challenge is to find a way to get the most attacking players on the pitch. You can't forget the other end and how important that is.

"I thought we tried something and it hasn’t quite come off. "

Can we clarify something please? Carsley did what a vocal minority of England fans demanded with his selection. It is not all fans. The rest of us can see, quite plainly, that we have yet another Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes scenario. There are dozens of options available - playing everyone at once in random positions does not work.

England's interim manager has said that the Three Lions have to be more courageous at times, despite Thursday night's 2-1 defeat to Greece at Wembley.

Greek journalist Kostas Lianos points out that the Greek players were playing for more than football against England last night and that they were playing for their fellow international George Baldock, who passed away this week.

This was an outburst from the players, this was the players leaving their soul on the pitch and every single bit of it was for George Baldock and his family. This is a very tight knit group that has been together since at least 2021.

They are friends, they are brothers and I was talking to people from the Greek team before the game and I was hearing that the players are struggling to understand what has happened.

Training was cancelled and no one was really thinking about football today but it’s obvious that the players and the manager were.

They let it all out and after the game the Greek players all lined up in front of the away fans with a shirt of George Baldock and almost everyone was crying.

It was an amazing victory, first every victory over England, first ever win at Wembley and amazing performance from everyone.

England interim manager Lee Carsley on the decision to start Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham and Cole Palmer together in England's defeat to Greece: "With the players we have got, we have to be courageous at times with our systems and be creative. I could have quite easily gone with a recognised nine. We had two on the bench. But I thought it was important to try something different.

"I think at this stage as well coming of the last two games, I never at any point thought that I have got it cracked. It was a case of let's try something different and I’m happy to take blame for that. It was totally my idea.

"I thought about it long and hard about, in terms how it might look, how it might build and how it might feel. It is something that didn't come off tonight but I don't think we should rule out having that opportunity to try something different."

England interim manager Lee Carsley on what went wrong in England's defeat to Greece: "I didn't think we started the game great. I thought that we were second best a lot of times.

"We tried something different with the formation and the areas of the pitch we tried to get into. We never really gave ourselves a chance to see if it was the right decision or wrong.

"Obviously looking at the result and the game panned out it was a challenging night for us.

"Greece played well. I thought they were highly motivated as you would expect and were second best tonight."

  14. Brady hits late winner as Republic of Ireland beat Finlandpublished at 08:04 British Summer Time

Robbie Brady fired home an 88th-minute winner as the Republic of Ireland picked up their first victory under Heimir Hallgrimsson with a 2-1 win in Finland.

Finland were gifted a first-half opener when Irish captain Nathan Collins underhit a back pass, which allowed Joel Pohjanpalo to race through and slot past Caoimhin Kelleher.

However, it was a much-improved performance in the second half and Liam Scales headed home Brady's free-kick just shy of the hour mark to score the first goal of the Hallgrimsson era.

There was late drama to come when Brady was on hand to rifle Festy Ebosele's cross into the roof of the net to score a goal that could ignite Hallgrimsson's tenure as manager.

The win is only the third in their past 14 competitive matches, but it could be a crucial three points after two morale-damaging defeats to open their Nations League campaign.

There had been calls for players to step up and end the poor run of form, and Brady answered that call with an assist and superb winner in Helsinki.

Morning. Carsley should stick to his formation of how he wants to set up his team. If Kane was fit would he have dropped him and experimented? No. Either Watkins or Solanke should have played, I prefer Watkins who is in great form, and had Bellingham next to Rice which would have balanced the side. Greece were excellent and fully deserved the win over a very poor England side.

England interim manager Lee Carsley on his future after England's defeat to Greece: "I said at the start that I wouldn’t rule myself in or out, and that is still the case. I’m comfortable in my position where I am and the remit is clear.

"I’m comfortable and confident with that. After the first camp I didn’t get too excited or believe too much, I’m very aware this is one of the best jobs in the world in terms of having the chance of actually winning a major competition."

England interim manager Lee Carsley on his future following the defeat to Greece: "I was quite surprised after the last camp in terms of ‘the job is mine’ and ‘it’s mine to lose’ and all the rest of it.

"My remit has been clear from the start - I’m doing three camps. There are three games left and then hopefully I’ll be going back to the Under-21. It has almost no impact."

Goalscorer Vangelis Pavlidis said Greece's players "gave everything" for their late team-mate George Baldock, who died the day before their historic win over England at Wembley.

Pavlidis scored in stoppage time as Greece beat the Euro 2024 finalists 2-1 on Thursday evening - the day after their players learned of Baldock's death.

A minute's silence was held in memory of Baldock before the Nations League match, and Pavlidis held his black armband aloft after scoring the game's opening goal before the team collectively raised Baldock's number two shirt in celebration.

"It was a really special game for us because of George and of course we gave everything for him and for his family," Pavlidis told ITV.

"We just said that we have to play for him. It doesn't matter the score today, we want to play for him and we give everything for him."

England-born Panathinaikos defender Baldock, 31, drowned in a swimming pool at his home in Glyfada, southern Athens, on Wednesday evening.

Baldock's family said they were "heartbroken" by the sudden passing of "our beloved George".
