On making his international debut the last time Scotland played Hungary, Hendry added:

While we wait, let's have a look at what the pundits made of last night's performance:

    Former Scotland winger Pat Nevin:

A lot of pride back. After the Germany game a lot of people would’ve watched that, who hadn’t watched Scotland before and thought, they’re out of their league.

I don’t think that’s the case because Scotland have shown time and again that they're capable of doing better.

I walk away from that game and I’m happy. Minor disappointment that we didn’t get the win but actually did we deserve the win? No, I’m not that biased.

    Former Scotland forward James McFadden:

A much better performance, straight from the off, you could see the intent to go and press and try and put Switzerland under as much pressure as they could and crucially we got the first goal and gave ourselves a real belief.

It’s so unlike Scotland to perform the way they did against Germany.

So I think they did pretty well, we are being greedy by saying we would’ve loved to have won the game but the most important part was being in it and still having a chance to qualify and that’s what they’ve given themselves.

    Ex-Scotland midfielder Charlie Adam:

There were a lot of good moments and a lot of things we need to improve on defensively. I know people make mistakes but small details, if you want to play at the top level of football, you get punished for mistakes and that’s what happened.

Overall from a performance and our reaction was very, very good. It gives us an opportunity on Sunday against a very good Hungarian team. Ranked 26th in the world, they are not to be messed with.

    Scotland women's captain Rachel Corsie:

It's a good place to be, it's where you want to be.

I think the performance, emotionally and mentally, will count for a lot. We have a real solid group of players, and a structured system.

We'll give it a real go against Hungary and the fans will get right behind them.

We're expecting Jack Hendry any minute now.

He was part of a heroic defensive effort last night.

  14. 'Echoes of three years ago'published at 16:22 British Summer Time 20 June

    James McFadden

From a football point of view, there have been echoes of three years ago, in terms of results.

We lost the first game then, before getting a bit of a heroic draw at Wembley. Then we know what happened against Croatia.

You're supposed to learn your lessons from past mistakes.

I don't think we underestimated Croatia three years ago, but they were very good.

I don't think this Hungary team are as good as that Croatian side, but we need to prepare believing they're just as good as Switzerland.

We've given ourselves a chance of four points and getting out of a group for the first time. It's not guaranteed, but if we got the win and still couldn't go through, it's just typical Scotland isn't it?

Hungary played well against Germany, but if we turn up we can win this game. All we want is to go and have some belief, and now there's plenty of it.

An interesting question I've just received in a group chat...

Would you take Scotland getting to the last 16 if it meant England won the Euros?

Thumbs up if you would. Don't worry, it's anonymous...

  16. 'Roll on Sunday' - McTominaypublished at 16:16 British Summer Time 20 June

Goalscorer on Wednesday and qualification hero Scott McTominay says Scotland's "hunger and desire" could be key to them beating Hungary.

"Roll on" Sunday, the Manchester United midfieder added.

Gordon: Enjoyed it. Exactly what we should be seeing from a Scotland side going forward. Created a few really good chances and stood up to the Swiss physicality. Really do worry about us defensively though, we've given away six really poor goals in two games now and it could easily have been more. Would have taken a point before the match. Up there with one of my favourite Scotland games, incredible atmosphere.

Bruce: Much better performance. A cracking game. Scotland really put the pride back into their performance, high energy press and much better touch and distribution. Roll on Sunday!

Asim: A brave and thoughtful performance from Scotland.

Rab: Absolutely delighted with the effort, commitment, drive, grit, guts and determination. Superb effort from the boys! Pride restored… Now come on and make history!

Tam: It was always going to come down to four points from the Switzerland & Hungary games. So part one completed, one point in the bag. Now it’s easy maths. Beat Hungary, go through. Simples!

  18. 'Anthem was incredible'published at 16:08 British Summer Time 20 June

Midfielder Kenny McLean, who was a second-half substitute in the draw with Switzerland, insists there's more improvement to come from Scotland in Sunday's "huge" meeting with Hungary,

The Norwich man also touched on an "incredible" rendition of Flower of Scotland in Cologne.

What did you all make of last night's performance?

Andy: The performance was more like the qualifying campaign. Combination of guile and steel, closing down quickly and breaking with pace. Yes, there were mistakes but we should expect that. It’s the reaction to Ralston’s error that really pleased me. No heads went down. Great to see and now with a real chance to progress in our own hands and not simply relying on other results in isolation. Brilliant job Scotland.

Martin: Scotland the Brave! We are absolutely decimated in defence yet still stood up to be counted. Gilmour's inclusion was key. When he was on the pitch he oozed class and calmness on the ball. All I wanted after that German mauling was evidence we belonged at this level. We could have lost, could have won (that Akanji clearance was world class). Scotland shook Switzerland to their core. The Tartan Army march! Watch out Hungary! Wee gripe: can we give Shankland more than four injury time minutes in Stuttgart, please Stevie?

Alastair: Tremendous response from Scotland. The Tartan Army were outstanding. Progression is in our hands and with another scintillating performance like that on Sunday, the team will make a little bit of Scottish footballing history.

Nick: Pride restored. Scotland were always going to be a different side to the one that folded in Munich, but the tigerish, front-footed football they showed was exciting, passionate and skilful. Defence looked, one mistake aside, like a pretty composed unit, and attacks were frequent (particularly in the second half). Come on Scotland!
