It’s a mistake to appoint Potter. The Board have dealt with this all very poorly Julen had to go but Potter is not the man for either the short or long term to sort them out. Should have gone for Michael Carrick. Knows the club, well regarded as an up and coming coach. Would have got Hammers playing better football. Bowen out is a worry. Time for board to invest in the team.

Glenn Murray says Potter would change the formation two or three times in a single afternoon. If a manager of a company changed direction that often they'd be accused of having no real vision or conviction. I don't rate Potter at all - I think he's very second tier and can't see West Ham achieving anything of substance under him.

  4. 'They'll have a plan going forwards'published at 16:49 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Former West Ham midfielder John Moncur on BBC Radio 5 Live: "I think a lot of fans would have said Graham Potter is probably the one we would have chosen from the off. Young English manager, if you like, done a great job at Brighton. Interest in bringing young players through as well.

"You've got to remember West Ham won the FA Youth Cup not so long ago [2023]. We've got good young players, so it would have been a great fit. I think the style at which he played in Brighton and the way he got the team playing would have really been attractive to us as a club.

"There will be some funds available [January transfer window], you've got to remember though we spent nearly £100m at the start of the season so obviously they've had their meetings over this, he's going to have targets in mind and they're going to have a plan going forwards."

All this talk from non-West Ham fans about regretting Moyes [leaving] seem to forget that after our unparalleled few years of success, we had two seasons of pretty shocking results. Almost like the players were sick of the tactics. So, it was time for a change. Just because Lopetegui was a sideways move, doesn’t mean there’s regret at not keeping Moyes. I am worried in the short term though. Even as an Hammer, I’m appalled at the treatment of Lopetegui, and that can’t be good for morale in the whole place, and could negate the new manager bounce. But I’ll be getting behind Potter no matter what and hope he can get the best out of our team. I think the first XI matches or betters a lot of the teams competing for the lower European competitions.

  6. 'We've been all over the place'published at 16:41 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Former West Ham midfielder John Moncur spoke about what went wrong at West Ham on BBC Radio 5 Live: "We had stability really for quite a period and obviously David Moyes had done a great job but it had ran out of patience, fans had a little bit [of patience] with the style of play but the most alarming thing this year is when we've given the ball away and out of position defensively we've been all over the place.

"To leak so many goals against not even big teams I would call, is the problem. You know when you're leaking fours and fives [goals], there's a real problem there."

  8. 'There hasn't been an improvement'published at 16:35 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Former West Ham midfielder John Moncur on Julen Lopetegui's sacking on BBC Radio 5 Live: "No, not at all [surprised by the sacking]. I mean, looking at it, there hasn't been an improvement one bit. West Ham fans were calling after David Moyes to have a more attractive style of play and that didn't really happen from day one.

"The most alarming thing for us as supporters is when we lost the ball, the transition, we were so open, we've conceded so many goals, especially of late. It was only a matter of time before he did get the sack."

West Ham fans are respectful of what David Moyes achieved, but I don't think he really wanted to stay. Julen Lopetegui has been treated appallingly by the board, but that's nothing new. He wasn't given enough time, and was pretty much done for after the Leicester game. When it was good (Newcastle) it was very very good. When it was bad (Liverpool) it was horrid.

    Derek

Such a pity we can't sack the West Ham board for their inept appointment and subsequent treatment of Julen Lopetegui. Disgraceful and they should also look at the appointment of Tim Steidten as his recruiting hasn't exactly set the West Ham midfield, defence or attack on fire. I truly wish Graham Potter well but if he goes down in a year, the board has to go.

  10. Graham Potter record at Chelseapublished at 16:31 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January

After three-and-a-bit seasons in charge of Brighton, Potter took the chance to manage Chelsea.

What seemed like the perfect 'step-up' quickly turned into a nightmare though, with Potter sacked after just seven months in the job.

He left Stamford Bridge in April 2023 after winning only seven of his 22 Premier League games, with seven draws and eight defeats. He hasn't held a managerial position since.

  11. Graham Potter record at Brightonpublished at 16:27 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January

Graham Potter achieved great things in Sweden with Ostersunds - he took them from the fourth division to Europe - but it was at Brighton that he made a name for himself in England.

Potter oversaw 120 Premier League games with the Seagulls, including 34 wins, 44 draws and 42 defeats.

While his win percentage was only 28.3%, that doesn't tell the story of the countless players he improved and the role he played in turning Brighton into an established top flight side.

Here are some more shouts from West Ham fans:

Tim: I believe Lopetegui should be given the season. There have been glimpses of what he is trying to achieve and binning managers so quickly is unsettling for any club. We are not bad enough to go down so I think we should wait to see how things pan out.

Lee: We should go for Edin Terzic. Potter's win percentage is the same as Lopetegui's whereas Terzic's is over 60%. Originally I wanted Ruben Amorim, but that obviously hasn't really worked out for Manchester United, so I guess we could be in a worse place. But I feel Terzic would work well for us, especially with director Tim Steidten.

Martin: In a nutshell, it has got to be Ange Postecoglou.

Geoff: The club is run like a complete circus and no manager worth his salt would touch the job with the proverbial barge pole. The next appointment will be someone who has fallen off the managerial merry-go-round and is currently, therefore, available.

Lot of comments about West Ham mistreating Lopetegui. We should remember that he has overseen half a season of abject failure with no sign or any hint of progress. The club have been let down and now no doubt must hand over millions to end his contract, which they clearly had to do.

We wanted to know who you think West Ham should be looking at to replace Julen Lopetegui. Here are some of your suggestions:

Ben: Graham Potter is the best option, especially given the West Ham board's usual criteria of Premier League experience and being unemployed. He will also have something to prove, much like David Moyes did. As for Lopetegui, he can have no complaints about being sacked.

David: Potter is not the right man for the job needed at West Ham. We need a total rebuild from the academy through to the first team. The bigger picture is that a cultural change is needed in the running of the club. David Sullivan, Karen Brady and Tim Steidten all need to be replaced.

Glen: The obvious choice is Wayne Rooney.

Ant: It should be Moyes, obviously, but he won't come back after the way he has been treated twice now. Plus a fair-sized chunk of the fanbase still don't see that he was our best manager since John Lyall. He is proven in the Premier League and in European competition.

  15. Graham Potter style of playpublished at 16:11 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January

Graham Potter and Glenn MurrayImage source, Getty Images

Former Brighton striker Glenn Murray on the playing style of Graham Potter, the favourite to replace Julen Lopetegui: "He's not rigid. He's not stuck in a system or a style. He's very fluid, and I think we even see that in-game. When I played under him, we would change formations two or three times in a single afternoon, which is quite a skill to be able to have your players understand everything you want from them and be able to change in-game.

"I mean, these changes weren't made at half time. He wasn't exactly sitting everyone down. It was an instruction from the sideline, and, lo and behold! We all knew our jobs, and how to change that style in-game, which I think is credit to his managerial capabilities.

"Graham is a very thought-provoking manager. He knows exactly what he wants, but he wants feedback from the players. It's a collective rather than a dictatorship. And he will meticulously study each and every opponent, and he will best plan the way to try and penetrate that opponent, to try and hurt that opponent, and obviously win games at the end of the week."

[Replying to Haggis, 15:46] It was 100% the right time when Moyes left. We were going backwards for a good while. 74 goals conceded in the league was terrible last season. Just because Lopetegui failed, doesn't mean it was wrong to let Moyes go.

West Ham fans didn't know how good they had it with Moyes. European place finishes and a trophy to go with them - it was West Ham's most successful spell in over a generation. Their fans thought the football should have been better, but as they're now finding out, the grass isn't always greener.

    Chris, Manchester

Everyone always romanticises about managers after they've gone. Moyes was great for a time and brought them a trophy, but ultimately, it was clear they were moving in a downward trajectory under him. The issue was they chose the wrong replacement, not that it was wrong decision to change. West Ham fans shouldn't be criticised for wanting to keep progressing. It's harder than ever to break into the Big six... ask Villa and Newcastle.

  20. 'Anyone that buys into Potter's philosophy will be successful'published at 15:58 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January

Graham Potter applauds fansImage source, Getty Images

Former Brighton striker Glenn Murray on the type of player that will be successful under Graham Potter: "Someone that works extremely hard. He's very big on next action. So for instance, if something goes wrong, he doesn't want disappointment or arms in the air. It's about that next action about getting up on your feet and getting back in the game and not pausing, staying in the game effectively from a mental capacity point of view.

"I think anyone that buys into Graham's philosophy will be successful under him. I do believe he's not just a manager, but he's a coach. He makes people better around him. And I mean, I think the talent that he could have at his disposal at West Ham is there for all to see - your [Mohamed] Kudus, your [Jarrod] Bowens. I think they've got a good number of players, [Edson] Alvarez in midfield. They've got a nice balance, which, unfortunately, Lopetegui just hasn't seemed to be able to put his finger on."
