Belgium now have their Euro 2025 play-off destiny in their hands

Scotland Under-21s' hopes of qualifying for the 2025 European Championship in Slovakia next summer look slim after a damaging defeat against Belgium at Tynecastle.

The win takes Belgium above Scotland into second place in Group B, with Spain already qualified as group winners.

Belgium started much the brighter and dominated possession, but it was the young Scots who had the best early opportunity.

Adedire Mebude found good space down the left and cut the ball back to Lennon Miller on the edge of the Belgium 18-yard box.

However the Motherwell teenager's shot was straight into the arms of visiting goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

Belgium continued to dominate and both Youssuf Sylla and the impressive Jorne Spileers went close to a breakthrough.

Belgium continued to dominate after the break and took the lead with 18 minutes left.

The visitors' captain Killian Sardella fired in a shot from 12 yards that Lewis Budinauckas could only parry into the path of Lucas Stassin.

The substitute had only been introduced moments earlier but despatched the ball beyond the Scotland goalkeeper.

In added time, Stassin knocked in his second from close range to seal the key victory for the visitors.

The result means that in order to earn a play-off spot Scotland must win in Kazakhstan on Tuesday and hope Hungary can cause a shock and beat Belgium.
