Liam Boyce's goal was his fifth of the campaign for the Candystripes

Derry City are now unbeaten in three games after a 1-0 win against St Patrick's Athletic at Richmond Park.

Liam Boyce's close-range header in the 29th minute broke the deadlock and proved enough to clinch the three points for the away side.

Pats had the better chances and pushed for a leveller until the final whistle, but they couldn't find a way past Brian Maher.

The victory is fourth placed Derry's second in Dublin in four days, and they are now 11 points behind league leaders Shamrock Rovers, who lost 2-0 against Bohemians.

Derry break deadlock against the run of play

Jason McClelland's strike from range forced Maher make his first save of the evening in the opening two minutes of the game before the Derry keeper was called into action again to deny Sean Hoare's header.

The home side continued to dominate the game with Brandon Kavanagh attempting to give the Saints the lead against his former club with an audacious overhead kick, but it was narrowly wide.

Derry broke the deadlock through their first chance of the game just before the 30-minute-mark when Boyce nodded home Ronan Boyce's cross from the right wing.

St Pats continued to enjoy majority of the possession but struggled to test Maher with Kavanagh's free-kick headed away by Sam Todd and the Derry defence able to deal with other threats.

Candystripes weather St Pats storm

Just after the restart, Mason Melia's shot from a Barry Baggley cross was saved by Maher, whilst at the other end no one could steer home Adam O'Reilly's delivery across the face of goal.

Maher was the busier of the stoppers and was then called into action again to gather Zachary Elbouzedi's effort.

Stephen Kenny's side continued to push for an equaliser with Simon Power's effort straight at Maher and Kavanagh's strong shot narrowly wide of the left-hand post.

Chances remained few and far between for Derry with Michael Duffy firing a free-kick from 20-yards just over the crossbar in the 74th minute.

The Candystripes will hope to extend their unbeaten run on Friday night, when they welcome defending FAI Cup champions Drogheda United to the Brandywell.
