1. How many teams qualify for the knockout phase?published at 13:54 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January

Here's a reminder of what the 36 league-phase teams are aiming for.

Those finishing in the top eight automatically progress to the last 16, where they will be seeded.

They will await the winners of eight two-legged knockout play-off ties featuring the clubs ranked from ninth to 24th.

Those finishing between ninth and 16th will be seeded and face a team placed 17th to 24th, with the advantage of playing the second leg at home.

The clubs 25th or lower are eliminated and do not gain entry to the Europa League.

The play-off ties take place mid-February, with the last-16 matches in the first two weeks of March.

  5. Palace fear ACL injury for centre back Riadpublished at 13:42 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January

    Alex Howell
    BBC football news reporter

Crystal Palace fear centre back Chadi Riad has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The injury, if confirmed, would potentially keep Riad out for the best part of a year and leaves Palace short in the centre-back area.

Chelsea recalled loanee Trevoh Chalobah earlier this month and Riad's injury would leave them with Marc Guehi, Maxence Lacroix and Chris Richards as the only fit senior centre-backs.

Oliver Glasner plays with three central defenders in his system so a serious injury to Riad would present a problem.

The Eagles were not likely to replace Chalobah in the transfer window as they had Riad available after injury.

But if Riad is now out long term, Palace would look to enter the market for another defender.

The Eagles came into this window looking for an attacker and a left wing-back, and signed Romain Esse from Millwall, with the 19-year-old scoring on his debut on Saturday.

  6. Bobb could provide Man City boostpublished at 13:39 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January

Man City v Club Brugge (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

When Manchester City's Oscar Bobb got injured in pre-season it was disappointing for many fans as it was expected that the 21-year-old would play a big role in the Premier League champions' title defence.

The midfielder enjoyed a breakthrough season last year with 26 appearances including 14 in the Premier League.

Bobb had already cemented himself as one to watch in many City fans' minds after he scored a stoppage-time winner against Newcastle as Pep Guardiola's side moved towards a fourth consecutive Premier League title.

It was a big turning point in the season and a crucial moment in City's title chase which left many excited about the future of the academy graduate.

Bobb, who signed a five-year contract at City last February, also scored in a 3-2 win over Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League.

Fulham v Manchester UnitedImage source, Getty Images

Jez, Cheltenham: Hi Phil. What are your thoughts on late kick off fixtures that involve teams many miles apart. Eg. Man City v Chelsea & Fulham v Man Utd last weekend. Is it fair on away fans having to travel a long way to watch their club with the high possibility that there is no or little public transport late in the day? Why can’t late kick off fixtures be local derbies so fans don’t have to travel far?

Phil: Hi, Jez. Modern football. It is very tough on away fans and not ideal at all but this is now how games are scheduled and I do not see it changing, especially when those away sections are still packed with travelling fans. As I say, not ideal but now a fact of life.

  8. How is Bobb able to be involved in Champions League?published at 13:32 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January

Man City v Club Brugge (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

Midfielder Oscar Bobb was not named in Manchester City's original Champions League squad because of his injury.

So for those wondering how he might be eligible to play on Wednesday in spite of that, here we go...

Players can be registered on Uefa's 'List B' if they are born on, or after, 1 January 2003 and have been eligible to play for their club for an uninterrupted two-year period since their 15th birthday.

Norway international Bobb, 21, joined City's youth ranks in 2019 and played for them until last season, where he broke into the first team and made 26 appearances across all competitions.

That makes him eligible to be put on 'List B' and therefore he could feature tomorrow.

  9. 'I would limit the number to one (two if I’m being generous)'published at 13:29 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January

    Phil McNulty Q&A

David, Cardiff: Hi Phil, When it comes to VAR and bad decisions (Arsenal’s red card being a prime example), is it time to trial giving managers an appeal system similar to the NFL that will force the referee to take another look using the monitor?

Phil: Hi David. I’m against anything that holds up, or interrupts the game, even more than VAR already does, but if a manager feels a serious error has been made I have no complaints about a review/appeal system – although I would limit the number to one (two if I’m being generous) otherwise we could be there all day.

Surely the last thing you want is a knee jerk reaction from your club spending unnecessary money on players who aren't right for the squad? Man City clearly have unlimited resources so can gamble on players. And how can Arsenal be out of the PL when the season is nowhere near over and they are keeping up with the leaders? It's time for calm and trust and getting behind the team.

  11. Is Bobb return from injury imminent?published at 13:24 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January

Man City v Club Brugge (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

Pep Guardiola suggested in his press conference that midfielder Oscar Bobb is returning to fitness and could be available in the coming days.

The Spaniard did not elaborate on whether that meant Bobb is available to play on Wednesday against Club Brugge, with the 21-year-old returning to training earlier this month after five months out with a fractured leg.

The Norway international sustained the injury in training on the eve of the Premier League season and has not featured for City this season.

It was a blow for Manchester City and Guardiola with Bobb tipped by many fans to fully step up to the first team this campaign, having made 26 appearances across all competitions last season - including 14 in the Premier League.

His return would be a huge boost to City's injury-hit squad.

    Phil McNulty Q&A

Peter, Basingstoke: Hello Phil, Bournemouth are not just playing winning football, they are playing exciting football. How highly do you rate Andoni Iraola and will he be attracting the attention of other clubs?

Phil: Afternoon, Peter. Very highly. And yes, Iraola will be attracting the attention of other clubs.

This does not mean I am suggesting he will leave. It would be more of a surprise if I said he wasn't attracting the attention of other clubs, given the way Bournemouth are playing.

I was at The Vitality Stadium to see them beat Nottingham Forest 5-0 on Saturday and it was one of the best team performances I have seen this season. They were thrilling to watch, fast, skilful and full of threat.

Bournemouth's current squad is a tribute to the recruitment team, including former sporting director Richard Hughes, who is now at Liverpool, and his long-time assistant Simon Francis, who has carried on the good work after taking.

The atmosphere down there was fantastic and you can just feel the optimism as you walk around the club and the stadium.

  13. Arsenal submit appeal to have Lewis-Skelly red card overturnedpublished at 13:19 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January

    Alex Howell
    BBC football news reporter

Arsenal have submitted an appeal to have Myles Lewis-Skelly’s red card from the 1-0 win over Wolves overturned.

Lewis-Skelly was dismissed for catching Wolves' Matt Doherty above the ankle to break up a counter-attack just outside the Wolves box in the 43rd minute.

Mikel Arteta said after the match that the decision was ‘difficult to accept’ and said he hoped that Arsenal would not have to appeal as it was ‘so obvious’.

“I leave it to you guys because it's that obvious that today, you don't need my words. It was so obvious." Arteta said.

The Football Association has been approached for comment.

Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol on tomorrow's opponents Club Brugge: "I can tell you they are a good team. It's not going to be easy. I faced them three years ago with RB Leipzig and they were really good.

"They play with the wide wingers to let them play one v one so I think it is going to be a good game, we need the points, we need to win and we are going to do everything tomorrow to win the game."

Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol on whether he prefers the new Champions League format which came in this season: "I think I prefer the other one but I can also say that this one is quite good. You play four games at home, four games away.

"I think they are going to keep this format so obviously we have to get used to it but if you ask me I prefer the old one because you know you have three teams to play, at home and away so you can prepare."

Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol on whether he enjoys the high pressure games: [laughing] "I'm going to enjoy if I win! We want to qualify for the next stage and I think our confidence is good, especially after our last home game [against Chelsea]. We're going to have huge support from our fans so I think we're going to be ready tomorrow."

On whether they can achieve more this season: "Yes, the season is still long, there are so many games to play and we should go game by game to try and win the next game."

Man City v Club Brugge (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Manchester City

Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol on why his side have conceded so many goals in the Champions League this season: "This is football. If you ask me, I would like not to concede goals. Last game against PSG, we played away, we were 2-0 up and then you want to finish the game by scoring one more. We wanted to keep going to score one more and then they can hurt you, that's what happened. We conceded one, two, three quick goals somehow and obviously we were a bit down mentally and it is difficult to come back, especially when you play away."

Having arrived at Manchester City as a £77m established central defender for Croatia and RB Leipzig, Josko Gvardiol has been a revelation at left-back.

He has scored five times already this season and has proved himself one of City's key attacking outlets.

In addition, in a season where Pep Guardiola's squad has been decimated by injuries, Gvardiol has stayed fit.

Only striker Erling Haaland has started more than his 21 Premier League games and with Nathan Ake and Ruben Dias still sidelined, is going to be a key presence in the weeks ahead.

Gvardiol will be speaking to the media looking ahead to tomorrow's crucial Champions League encounter with Club Brugge shortly.
