Two free transfers that sometimes get over looked are Pirlo to Juventus - the man was like a fine wine - and Gary McAllister to Liverpool, playing a major part in the cup treble that season. Both legends.

Seeing the free agent XI, it is a very strong team in theory, but makes you wonder why these guys are all free agents. The likes of Neymar and Veratti, on paper, would be great signings but in reality, nobody seems keen.

Tino Livramento watched his England Under-21 team-mates win Euro 2023 while on holiday after missing out through injury.

The Newcastle full-back had just recovered from a serious knee injury which kept him out for a year while at Southampton.

Now, he has been one of the Young Lions' standout players before Saturday's Euro 2025 quarter-final with Spain in Slovakia.

It is a rematch of the final two years ago - which Lee Carsley's side won 1-0 - and one Livramento had to watch from afar.

He said: "In my career it was definitely the right thing for me not to go.

"Lee spoke to me, which was a big thing. He just said: 'I'd love for you to come away but it's obviously not the right timing with the injury' and everything I had going on in my life at that moment.

"I was just very much behind the idea of supporting the team away from obviously being in Georgia. It was a great group and I loved watching them play.

"I want to be part of the team that wins this trophy and I want to retain it for my nation."

Wolves have confirmed the signing of attacking midfielder Fer Lopez on a permanent deal from Celta Vigo - but who is he?

The Spaniard broke into the first team last season making his senior debut in October 2024 during a Copa del Rey tie.

The 21-year-old went on to net four goals in 20 appearances in all competitions for Celta before signing a five-year deal at Molineux.

Predominantly deployed as a right winger, Lopez is versatile and able to play anywhere across the front four.

He netted four times in all competitions during the 2024-25 season.

Lopez spent a brief period of time in school in Suffolk, before enrolling at Los Celestes' academy when he was 10 years old.

In recent years, Tarkowski to Everton has been fantastic. Great leader, only missed his first games after a massive run of appearances at the back end of the season. Also scored a couple of important goals if we haven't mentioned it yet!!!

  7. Diomande's 2024-25 seasonpublished at 14:56 British Summer Time

Diomande was nurtured by current Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim during his time at Sporting.

He started the coach’s last home game in charge of Sporting as they beat Manchester City 4-1 in the Champions League last November.

Diomande, who has nine caps for his country, made 46 appearances in 2024-25 as Sporting won the domestic double.

He attempted and completed more passes than any other player in Portugal’s top flight last season and also carried the ball five metres or more up the pitch on an unrivalled 598 occasions, highlighting his ball-playing ability.

The centre-back is strong in the air too. His 65% success rate in aerial duels was the seventh highest in the division, and 11% more than Guehi managed in the 2024-25 Premier League.

  8. Who is Diomande?published at 14:52 British Summer Time

Crystal Palace target Ousmane Diomande is an Ivorian centre-back that currently plays his trade in Portugal with Sporting Lisbon.

Only 21-years-old, Diomande has already made over 100 appearances for Sporting since moving there from Danish club Midtjylland in January 2023.

In September 2023, aged 19-years-old, the defender made his international debut for Ivory Coast whom he has since gone on to earn nine caps for.

He made 46 appearances in all competitions across 2024-25 for Sporting, nine of which came in the Champions League.

Should Guehi depart this summer, Diomande would likely fit straight into the eleven in place of the Englishman.

  9. Palace in talks with Sporting over Diomandepublished at 14:48 British Summer Time

    Sami Mokbel
    BBC Sport Senior football correspondent

Crystal Palace are in talks with Sporting Lisbon over a move for centre-back Ousmane Diomande.

The FA Cup holders are looking to strengthen their defence this summer given the uncertainty over the future of skipper Marc Guehi, who has just 12 months to run on his contract.

Diomande, 21, is a serious target for Palace but it remains to be seen whether the clubs can reach an agreement for the central defender, who has also attracted interest from across Europe.

The Ivory Coast international is valued at around £40 million, a fee that would smash the club's current transfer record of £32 million for Christian Benteke in 2016.

Palace have made signing a new centre-back a summer priority given Guehi's contractual situation.

England international Guehi could leave this summer as Palace look to avoid losing him for nothing next summer when his current contract expires.

An imminent new contract and a place on the shortlist for PFA Young Player of the Season are reward for Myles Lewis-Skelly’s breakout season with Arsenal and England.

The 18-year-old was a ball-carrying central midfielder in Arsenal’s academy but has excelled at left-back, with license to step into midfield, since making his first Premier League start in December.

Lewis-Skelly’s running power and physical strength are among his key attributes. He was only dribbled past once in the Premier League, the best record of any player to have made at least 15 starts. He also won the most duels (6) per 90 minutes and ranked third for fouls won (3.1) per 90.

His background as a midfielder is evidenced by a 93.6% pass accuracy, the fifth highest figure in the division among all players to have featured for at least 1000 minutes during 2024-25.

As England head coach Thomas Tuchel said after giving Lewis-Skelly his first England call-up in March, “He’s nothing but impressive.”

To Lachlan 14:10 How can 'locking down Lewis Skelly' be almost as good as a new signing? Is that because nothing is happening on that front as of now?

It wasn't a blemish-free breakthrough season for Myles Lewis-Skelly, as he collected two red cards last season - one versus Wolves and the other against West Ham.

His straight red against Wolves for a foul on Matt Doherty, which carried a three-match ban, was rescinded after an appeal, while the West Ham sending off, initially given as a yellow but upgraded to a red by referee Craig Pawson, saw him serve a one-match suspension.

However, in the Premier League last season, no Arsenal player won more duels per 90 minutes than Lewis-Skelly.

In March, Myles Lewis-Skelly impressed new England boss Thomas Tuchel by scoring on his debut in a 2-0 win against Albania at Wembley. That was the first goal of the Tuchel era, so could be a future pub quiz question.

The composed finish from Jude Bellingham's pass after 20 minutes made Lewis-Skelly the youngest player to score on his senior England debut - aged 18 years and 176 days - beating Marcus Rashford's previous record, set against Australia in May 2016, by 33 days.

Lewis-Skelly was given a standing ovation by England fans - and a warm hug he from Tuchel - when he was taken off in the closing moments; his key interceptions and fearless style of play catching the eye.

  18. Remember this Lewis-Skelly moment?published at 14:05 British Summer Time

    Myles Lewis-SkellyImage source, Getty Images

Myles Lewis-Skelly made his debut for Arsenal as a late substitute in September when he replaced Dutchman Jurrien Timber during the Gunners' 2-2 draw with Manchester City at Etihad Stadium.

His first Premier League start came against Everton in December.

So far his top-flight stats stand at 23 appearances and one goal - that first goal coming in the 5-1 home thumping of City in February.

To mark the occasion, the 18-year-old produced this moment: an imitation of Erling Haaland's trademark celebration. The Norway striker demanded to know "who are you?" when he clashed with the youngster at the end of that fractious draw five months earlier.

    Alex Howell
    BBC football news reporter

England defender Myles Lewis-Skelly has agreed a new contract at Arsenal.

The left-back, whose current deal expires in 2026, has been in talks with the Gunners over recent months.

The 18-year-old has now agreed the outline of an extended agreement, which will see him commit his future to the Gunners once signed.

It is reward for a breakthrough campaign last season, which saw Lewis-Skelly make 39 appearances in all competitions.

He made his debut against Manchester City in September and was mainly used at left-back, despite emerging through Arsenal's academy as a midfielder.

Lewis-Skelly's performances earned him a call-up to the full England squad in March, having previously been capped from Under-16 through to U19 level.

He scored in a 2-0 win against Albania at Wembley, becoming the youngest player in history to score on their full Three Lions debut.

Lewis-Skelly's performances last term saw him nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year award earlier this week, alongside Morgan Rogers, Liam Delap, Dean Huijsen, Milos Kerkez and Ethan Nwaneri.
