Ollie Rathbone challenges Daniel Phillips at the Racecourse

Promotion hopefuls Wrexham suffered a first League One home defeat of the season as they were beaten 3-2 by mid-table Stevenage at the Stok Racecourse.

Dan Sweeney missed an early chance for the visitors, but Dan Kemp was on target when his chance came begging on the 13th minute.

Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo managed to save Jordan Roberts' initial shot, but Kemp reacted first to fire home the rebound.

The lead was doubled five minutes later when Jamie Reid completed a neat exchange with Louis Appere before finding the net.

Wrexham made two half-time substitutions, with Steven Fletcher and Paul Mullin replacing Ollie Palmer and Matty Jones.

They pulled a goal back just before the hour mark, with Ollie Rathbone finding the bottom right corner, before Jake Young added a third for Stevenage 10 minutes later.

Wrexham scored again as the game headed into stoppage time, with Max Cleworth heading home an Elliot Lee cross.

It set up a tense final few minutes but Stevenage held on for a deserved win.

Wrexham remain third in the table as they missed the chance to close the gap on Birmingham City and Wycombe Wanderers, while Stevenage are 15th.

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson said: "Nowhere near good enough.

"We haven't been as free-scoring as we would have liked this season, but one thing we've done is worked exceptionally hard, but those two goals in the first half were too easy.

"We've got to get back to doing the very basics on the football pitch because if you're not playing well, for whatever the reasons, you still give yourselves a platform by fighting, competing all over the pitch, blocking shots and we were way off it tonight.

"It's a disappointing night for us and I've got to reflect quickly on that."
