Highlights: Dundee 1-0 Dundee United

Dundee battled past city rivals Dundee United at Dens Park to secure a place in the last 16 of the Scottish Cup.

Former United striker Simon Murray's flicked header in the first minute proved the match-winner in a pulsating contest.

It is Dundee's first victory over their neighbours in nine matches, since a 2-1 win in the League Cup in August 2017.

Tony Docherty's side are one of eight Premiership sides left in the competition and will host Airdrieonians on the weekend starting 8 February.

Murray headed home Finlay Robertson's in-swinging corner to give the hosts the perfect start - and that set the tone for the rest of the first half.

The hosts were ferocious in their press, strong in the tackle and bright in attack, with Murray, Lyall Cameron and Oluwaseun Adewumi all heavily involved.

Murray curled just over the top and had a close-range shot well blocked by Emmanuel Adegboyega, while Aaron Donnelly headed a Robertson corner just over as the home side probed for a second goal.

United twice had goals disallowed in the opening period - Sam Dalby turned home after Will Ferry's cross drifted out of play and Vicko Sevelj fired home from the edge of the box after referee Matthew MacDermid had blown for a foul in the middle.

The game became more frantic after the break, with all the same intensity of the first.

Cameron had a shot just over the top for the hosts, before United's Louis Moult headed Ferry's excellent cross wide and Kevin Holt shot straight at Dundee goalkeeper Trevor Carson.

Jim Goodwin's side turned the screw in search of a late equaliser, but Port Vale loanee Ruari Paton was denied a debut goal by an outstanding Ethan Ingram block, while Carson denied Declan Gallagher and Ferry with excellent saves.

Substitute Kristijan Trapanovski thought he had found a way through in injury time, but his curling effort bounced clear off the post, and Dundee hung on to claim their spot in the next round.

What they said

Dundee manager Tony Docherty: "A really pleasing start to the game. You then saw the mentality, the resilience and character of the team to see out the game and get a clean sheet.

"Simon runs himself into the ground, gets himself a goal and I'm delighted for him and all the players.

"We'll give Airdrieonians the upmost respect. I've just glad we've got a home tie. I see the atmosphere tonight and that's what you can get at Dens Park with the synergy between players and fans. They see the effort the players are putting in."

Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin: "We knew the game would be really intense and we saw that, but to concede a goal in the opening minute is as bad as you can get.

"The reaction in the second half was outstanding. We played the majority of it in Dundee's half. Unfortunately tonight it wasn't to be.

"Credit to Dundee, they defended their box brilliantly, a couple of blocks on the line.

"I do have a bit of a gripe. In the first half, Vicko Sevelj scores and I think the referee blows his whistle far too early. The Dundee player goes over too easily and we're punished for it."
