Celtic will face Kairat Almaty in the Champions League play-offs after the Kazakhstan side defeated Slovan Bratislava following a penalty shoot-out in Slovakia.

Brendan Rodgers' Scottish champions will host Kairat on 20 August, with the return six days later.

Kairat had arrived at the Stadion Tehelne Pole with a one-goal lead thanks to 17-year-old Kazakhstan forward Dastan Satpayev's last-minute penalty kick in the first leg.

Slovakia winger Robert Mak fired his national champions ahead on the night, and level on aggregate, on the half hour.

However, although Valeri Gromyko had his opening spot kick saved in the shootout, a save from Aleksandr Zarutskiy and a miss by Tigran Barseghyan gave Jorginho the chance to give Kairat a 4-3 win.

What do we know about Kairat?

Kairat won the Kazakhstan Premier League for the fourth time last season, their first title in four years, after edging out Astana by a single point.

They are currently three points ahead of Astana 19 games into their 2025 season, having played a game more than their rivals.

Kairat have reached the third round of Champions League qualifying for the first time, having beaten Slovenian champions Olimpija Ljubljana and Finland's KuPS before their penalty shoot-out win over Slovan.

They have reached the group stage of European competition once - in the Conference League in 2021-22.

In addition in several Kazakh internationals, former national head coach Rafael Urazbakhtin's squad includes veteran Belarus centre-half Alyaksandr Martynovich and compatriot Valery Gromyko along with two fellow midfielders capped by Israel - Ofri Arad and Dan Glazer.
