It is time to close this live page. We will leave you with BBC Sport reporter Andy Swiss' video tribute to Denis Law.

More tributes can be found in our news story here. You can also read the tale of the 'squinting kid who grew into giant of global game' from BBC Scotland's chief sports writer Tom English.

    Rest in peace, Denis.

  2. 'One of the best strikers in the world'published at 22:26 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January

Andy Mitten of United We Stand fanzine has paid his tribute to Law.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live:"It's extremely sad. He was one of the legends of the club. He has two statues at Old Trafford. Denis has a wonderful life and he said that consistently in interviews. His family are wonderful people and they were so proud of him - and rightly so, he was one of the best strikers in the world. The fans absolutely adored him. He was Sir Alex Ferguson's hero.

"George Best and Bobby Charlton were magnificent. But Denis had a bit of an edge and he appealed to the dark corners of the Stretford End, he was their hero. It's for that reason that there's only one statue in the Stretford End inside the stand."

  3. The squinting kid who grew into giant of global gamepublished at 22:22 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January

Denis Law stood on the platform at Huddersfield train station; slim, bespectacled and 15-years old, so small and so inconsequential that the waiting officials from his new club didn’t pick him out in the crowd.

“You’re Law?” one of them eventually twigged. “Really?”

Really. That young lad grew into a giant of the global game. The King, as he would come to be known.

The only British player good enough to get in the Brazil team of the day, said Pele. The “quickest thinking footballer I have ever seen” said Bill Shankly. “My hero” said Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Lawman has gone but what a life he lived and what a player he was. He scored a remarkable number of goals for his clubs and his country, but he was way more than a great predator in front of goal.

He had elegance, charisma and courage. He was a playmaker and a goalscorer, a total footballer, adored by his team-mates.

He was aggressive, had blistering acceleration, fantastic acrobatic ability and unerring accuracy in front of goal, with his feet and with his head.

He was gallus and unselfish and frequently unplayable.

What a giant of the global game the Aberdonian was and what a story he leaves behind.

So sad to hear the news about Denis Law. I saw him play for all his three English clubs against West Ham and he was the only footballer who seemed able to give Bobby Moore a very hard time, also for Scotland against England. My sincere condolences to his family & friends. A really true giant of the game.

Following an earlier Alzheimer's/vascular dementia diagnosis, my dad passed away a couple of years ago. Throughout my childhood and beyond he always insisted that Denis Law was a striker without equal. Denis was always his hero.

I grew up with Best/Law/Charlton but for me Denis Law always had that something extra.....always went his own way no matter what others thought.

I was lucky enough to interview Denis in my previous job. I could have listened to him all day, with story after story. A true gent and an extremely humble person. RIP King.

Manchester United's record goalscorer, Wayne Rooney has written a message in reply to the news of Denis Law's death, simply saying: "Legend. Thoughts with all Denis’ family and friends."

The two posed for a photograph at United's Carrington training ground when it was announced Rooney would wear the number 10 shirt, previously worn by Law, during the 2007-08 season.

Former United captain Gary Neville added on Instagram: "Rest in Peace Denis. A great footballer and a great man. It's a privilege and an honour to have spent time in your company. The King of the Stretford End."

Denis Law and his family helped raise funds for the Alzheimer's Society, who offered the former footballer support following his diagnosis in 2021.

Kate Lee, chief executive at Alzheimer's Society said: “We are deeply saddened by the news that Alzheimer’s Society supporter, Denis Law, has died with dementia.

"We’ll be forever grateful that Denis and his family raised not only money for Alzheimer’s Society but a great deal of awareness too.

“Talking about his diagnosis, Denis once said ‘you hope that it won’t happen to you’.

“The sad reality is that one in three people born in the UK today will go on to develop dementia and a million people are currently living with it.

"That number is projected to rise to 1.4 million by 2040.

"We need to get everyone talking about dementia - the health and care crisis of our time - because a problem of this scale won’t go away on its own."

Jo Moriarty: Sad news about Denis Law. He achieved so much as a footballer but he continued to make such a difference after he retired from football. He was really brave in talking publicly about his dementia.

Steve Pearson: Spent some time with Denis at Carrington a few years ago. A special lovely man. He signed my shirt which I'll always be thankful for and cherish it. May he rest in peace.

  15. 'Stories of Denis Law are what you grow up on as a Man Utd fan'published at 21:42 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January

    Gaz Drinkwater
BBC Radio Manchester's Total Sport presenter

I feel like someone my age, the first time you are taken to Old Trafford, one of the first questions I asked as a kid was, who are those three at the front? Who is that on the Holy Trinity? And of course, Denis Law was the last remaining member of that Holy Trinity of [George] Best, [Bobby] Charlton and Denis Law. It's just really sad news to hear today.

He was a Ballon D'or winner, a European Cup winner - I know he missed the final - FA Cup, top division. Stories of Denis Law are what you grow up on as a Manchester United fan; your dad, your grandad, and even your great grandad in some respects.

It was that great trio of Best, Law and Charlton that really hooked a lot of people in at that time to Manchester United. You hear these stories growing up and then eventually you become obsessed yourself. You watch games from the past and realise whatever the club has achieved since then, it's purely standing on the shoulders of giants.

  17. 'He scored some unbelievable goals'published at 21:33 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January

More from former Manchester United goalkeeper Alex Stepney, who spoke to Radio Manchester about Denis Law's playing style: "Players reacted to the way he played, because he was ruthless. You had to be in those days - there was no health and safety as it is today - so he went out there to score and score and score.

"And he did that unbelievably. The way he did it around the six yard box, and headed the ball. He scored some unbelievable goals.

"There's obviously the Trinity statue at Old Trafford, but there also one in the Stretford End - Denis has two statues at Old Trafford!"

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Alex Stepney, speaking to Radio Manchester: "Denis was the greatest header of the ball I have ever seen. He was like a salmon: he got so high and scored unbelievable goals. What can I say, around that six yard box, he was so quick, he was dynamite.

"And off the pitch, what a character. An absolute character. My word, he was Scottish through and through. We had great fun. And I look back at some of the things, especially if England were playing Scotland. I can't tell you what was said (!) but when we came back, we were all together again.

"I think Matt Busby helped with that, to be successful as well, because when you think about Munich in '58, I think, probably, rebuilding United to what they did in the '60s, Denis was probably one of the first parts of that."

  19. 'His legacy will live on'published at 21:26 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January

Aberdeen, the team Denis Law supported all his life, said: "Everyone at Aberdeen FC is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Aberdeen born football legend Denis Law.

"One of Scotland’s greatest ever players, his legacy will live on in the North-east.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends."
