Benfica have faced Marseille twice previously in European knockout ties and eliminated them both times, doing so in the 1989-90 European Cup semi final (2-2 on aggregate, through on away goals) and 2009-10 UEFA Europa League last 16 (3-2 on aggregate).
Marseille have only won one of their nine away major European matches in Portugal (D1 L7) but it was their most recent trip there in October 2022 in the UEFA Champions League, beating Sporting CP.
Benfica have never lost a home match in the UEFA Europa League in 28 previous games on home soil (W21 D7), failing to score just once in a 0-0 draw with Galatasaray in February 2019.
Marseille have won the first leg of five of their last seven major European knockout ties (D1 L1) and scored at least two goals in all seven games. However, all five of those wins came at home; they’ve only won the first leg of a knockout tie away from home in one of their last 14 attempts (D9 L4), a 3-1 win over FC København in the 2009-10 UEFA Europa League.
Only Liverpool (28) have scored more UEFA Europa League goals this season than Marseille (24), with the French side having the best expected goal total (19.8). It’s the most goals OM have scored in a major European season, with PSG the last French team to score more goals in a campaign (25 in 2019-20).
Benfica won the first leg of 13 of their first 16 UEFA Europa League ties (D2 L1) but have since won two of their last six (D2 L2). They have, however, won the first leg of all five of their previous quarter-finals.
Marseille’s Amine Harit has created the most chances (24), the most chances in open play (23), the most chances following a ball carry (12) and has the most open play assists (6) in the UEFA Europa League this season. No player has ever assisted more than six open play goals in a Europa League campaign.
Benfica’s Ángel Di María has been directly involved in six goals in his last five major UEFA European appearances (4 goals, 2 assists), although it has been 12 years since Di María scored in a major European quarter-final, doing so for Real Madrid against APOEL Nicosia in April 2012 the Champions League.
