Sixteen-year-old Michael Noonan struck a memorable winner on his debut for Shamrock Rovers as the Irish side beat Molde in the first leg of their Conference League play-off.

Noonan, aged 16 years and 197 days, became the youngest goalscorer in the competition's history when he converted Dylan Watts' cross just before the hour mark.

He is also thought to be the second youngest-ever goalscorer in Uefa main club competition, behind only former Aston Villa midfielder Nii Lamptey, who scored for Anderlecht in the Uefa Cup at the age of 16 years and 100 days.

Norwegian side Molde were already down to 10 men when Noonan scored, with the teenager also involved when Valdemar Lund was shown a straight red card for a challenge on him in the first half.

Noonan, previously linked with a move to Premier League champions Manchester City, only joined Rovers from St Patrick's Athletic last month.

He claims the record for the Conference League's youngest-ever goalscorer from Hearts player James Wilson, who scored against Moldovan side Petrocub, aged 17 years and 288 days old in December.

Shamrock Rovers are the first League of Ireland club to reach the knockout stages of a major European competition and will now be looking to seal a place in the last 16 when they host Molde in the second leg next Thursday.

The winners of the tie will play either Cercle Brugge or Legia Warsaw in the next round.

The Irish side have not even started their domestic season yet, with the opening game of their League of Ireland campaign on Sunday against Bohemians set to take place in front of a 30,000-plus crowd at Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

On the same night as Noonan's history-making goal, Ajax midfielder Jorthy Mokio became just the third 16-year-old to score in the Europa League with a fantastic volley from outside the box in their 2-0 win at Union Saint-Gilloise.

Who is record-breaker Noonan?

Noonan, an under-17 Republic of Ireland international, only made his league debut for St Patrick's Athletic against Bohemians last October.

According to the Shamrock Rovers website, Noonan "became the Saints' youngest ever starter, aged 15 years and nine months, and had a trial with Manchester City".

Shamrock Rovers boss Stephen Bradley was asked about Noonan's links to Manchester City when he signed for the club but said they were "irrelevant".

"You look at most players when there's talk of teams being after them, it's all irrelevant in the bigger picture," he said.

"When you get to know Michael, he's just focused on being better and improving."
