Real Madrid 1-0 Chelsea
Olga Carmona executes a wonderful little nutmeg on Aggie Beever-Jones on the wing.
The World Cup winner has been excellent so far this evening.
Substitute Catarina Macario scored two penalties as Chelsea came from behind to beat Real Madrid and move into the Women's Champions League quarter-finals as Group B winners.
Real had looked on course to snatch top spot after Scotland forward Caroline Weir gave them an early lead with her shot taking a deflection off Lucy Bronze before Hannah Hampton could not keep the ball out, despite getting a hand to the strike.
Sonia Bompastor, in danger of suffering a first loss since she took charge of the Blues in the summer, brought on United States international Macario for the ineffective Mayra Ramirez in a game-changing substitution at half-time.
The impact was instant. After already having an effort ruled out for offside and another shot go just wide, Macario scored her first penalty in the 51st minute after she had been brought down by Olga Carmona.
The defender, who scored when Spain beat England 1-0 in the final of the 2023 Women's World Cup, conceded another penalty shortly afterwards as she handled following Wieke Kaptein's flick.
Macario again fired her penalty high into the right side of the goal as Chelsea went on to win Group B with six wins out of six.
"I went out knowing what I had to do. I wanted to have a positive impact and give my all, to give my team more options and bring energy," said Macario.
"In the first half Real Madrid had a great performance. We needed to have more possession and I was prepared to change that. Looking ahead to the draw, it doesn't matter who comes. We are confident in our abilities."
Chelsea will face one of the group runners-up in March's two-legged quarter-finals, with the draw held in Nyon, Switzerland on 7 February.
German side Wolfsburg will finish second in Group A, while the winners and runners-up of Group C and Group D will be known on Wednesday.
Bayern Munich currently lead Group C over Arsenal, before they meet at Meadow Park, while Manchester City will finish above Barcelona in Group D if they earn a point or only lose by a one-goal margin in their match in Spain.
Bompastor has now won 15 and drawn one of her 16 games as Blues boss since she replaced Emma Hayes in the summer.
"We were not very happy with our performance in the first half," said Bompastor. "We all sat down together at half-time and told ourselves we had nothing to lose.
"We have a strong mentality, and that's important to win games. Macario is a world-class player; she changed the game. She showed a lot of confidence by scoring those two penalties."
This was Chelsea's last match of 2024 and Bompastor will be pleased her side get some time off.
Winger Johanna Rytting Kaneryd picked up a calf injury in the 1-1 draw at Leicester at the weekend and missed the game in Spain, as did Maelys Mpome with a quad injury keeping her out again.
England forward Lauren James will be out until the new year because of a calf injury, while Sophie Ingle, Mia Fishel, Sam Kerr, Kadeisha Buchanan and Aniek Nouwen are long-term absentees as they recover from respective anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries.
Chelsea suffered a further setback just before half-time as midfielder Guro Reiten had to be replaced after suffering what appeared to be an injury to her right ankle.
Reiten had created the visitors' best chance of the first half but saw her 30-yard strike superbly tipped over by home goalkeeper Misa Rodriguez.
But Real had been good value for their advantage, although Hampton would have been disappointed to have not saved Weir's deflected effort.
However, the game switched with Macario's introduction as Chelsea hope to become European champions for the first time after they lost 4-0 in the 2021 Champions League final against Barcelona under Hayes.
Macario's superb second-half performance ensured Chelsea would reach the last eight in 2024-25 with a 100% record, and the reigning Women's Super League (WSL) champions will be a side others want to avoid during the next phase in spring.
