Aston Villa come from behind to beat West Ham
Graham Potter suffered defeat in his first game as West Ham boss as Aston Villa came from behind to reach the FA Cup fourth round.
Two goals in five second-half minutes from Amadou Onana and Morgan Rogers completed the hosts' comeback, although the Hammers were furious referee Tim Robinson incorrectly awarded a corner in the build-up to Onana's leveller.
Lucas Paqueta's ninth-minute opener had the visitors deservedly ahead but Potter's new side were unable to hold on in the second half.
It had looked like Potter, only officially appointed on Thursday and with one training session to prepare, would make an instant impact.
He had waited for his next managerial opportunity after almost two years out since being sacked by Chelsea and having been in the running for jobs at Ajax and Leicester.
It was almost worth the wait after an electric start but the Hammers faded badly after the break, regardless of the officials' mistake.
The loss of striker Niclas Fullkrug to an apparent hamstring injury will also give Potter a problem with Jarrod Bowen already out with a fractured foot and Michail Antonio a long-term absentee.
He will rightly feel aggrieved at Villa's leveller - with Ezri Konsa also tangling with Paqueta - but the Hammers struggled to match the hosts' intensity even before Onana's 71st-minute equaliser.
Rogers pounced to win it soon after while Jacob Ramsey also hit the post late on.
Positives despite defeat for the Hammers
'Aston Villa were too strong' Graham Potter on defeat
Potter will have seen the good and the bad of West Ham in his first game.
There is little he would have been able to do with just one training session following his appointment as Julen Lopetegui's replacement.
The Hammers showed flashes of quality and inventiveness in the opening half an hour, which was capped by Paqueta's opener, but then struggled to maintain their momentum.
They can count themselves extremely unfortunate to have been on the end of the bad decision when referee Robinson incorrectly awarded a corner, from which Onana eventually bundled in the leveller.
Yet they were unable to contend with Villa, the hosts' relentless second-half efforts ultimately paying off.
It is only day two under Potter so any disappointment must be tempered and the Hammers must continue to look to the future.
Villa can only improve wretched FA Cup record

Morgan Rogers scored the winner as Aston Villa reached the FA Cup fourth round
It was just Villa's second FA Cup win in nine years.
Before Friday night's success, their only win in the competition since 2016-17 came in the third round at Middlesbrough last season.
A defeat to Stevenage two years ago, just over two months into Unai Emery's reign was a nadir in a sorry recent FA Cup record.
When Emery left Villarreal to join Villa in October 2022 he immediately underlined his desire to end the club's cup drought.
They have not won silverware since lifting the League Cup in 1996 and the FA Cup is likely to be their best hope of ending a 29-year wait this season, despite their impressive Champions League showings.
Villa grew into the game after a slow start and it is now just two defeats in their past nine games as Emery begins to steady the side again following their eight-match winless run between October and December.
It was not a vintage performance but Villa cans still dream of a trophy.
