Huddersfield players celebrate after winning the penalty shootout

League One Huddersfield twice fought back against Leicester City before edging a tense penalty shootout and clinching a second-round date with Premier League Sunderland in the Carabao Cup.

Terriers goalkeeper Lee Nicholls saved two penalties in the shootout, from Jordan Ayew and Kasey McAteer, with Bilal El Khannous hitting the post with his effort.

Goals from Daniel Vost, who reacted quickest after Dion Charles' penalty was saved by Foxes keeper Jakub Stolarczyk in the second half, and a brilliant late strike from Cameron Ashia twice hauled Huddersfield back into the tie.

Hamza Choudhury had scored only his second senior goal to put Leicester in front with a stunning 54th-minute strike, only to give away the penalty 11 minutes later which led to Vost scoring.

Harry Winks' curling strike looked like it might take Leicester through, but Ashia smashed home to take the match to penalties.

While this was a disappointment for a well-resourced Championship club like Leicester - relegated from the Premier League last season - there can be little shame in losing to a side who have made an excellent start to their season.

The Terriers appointed Lee Grant as boss in May on the way to a disappointing 10th-placed League One finish but are now unbeaten in three matches in all competitions.

Leicester had moments of dominance in a first half which contained a couple of penalty shouts - the first and best for Huddersfield came when Foxes defender Ben Nelson appeared to bring down Ruben Roosken - but there were few genuine goal chances.

After Alfie May, Leo Castledine and Lasse Sorensen scored from the spot for the hosts in the shootout, it was left to Nicholls to secure the second-round place when he blocked McAteer's effort.

Grant: 'Just a wonderful night'

Huddersfield Town boss Lee Grant told BBC Radio Leeds:

"We set our stall out this season to try and have some special nights in the cup - the group have identified it as something they really want to go for this year, so that's what we did.

"It's a win for the group. The group are really enjoying the challenge among themselves.

"I love the fact we can make nine changes, which is more than Leicester made, and there's no drop-off.

"It was just fantastic and I am really proud of the group and the work they are putting in."
