A record £5.18m has been spent on transfers in the women's game so far this summer - more than double the amount spent in 2023.

Over 1,100 transfers have been recorded across professional leagues, representing a 30% increase from the previous 12 months.

A study from Fifa found £5.18m ($6.8m) has been spent in the mid-year window from 1 June-2 September 2024, beating the previous record set in 2023 of £2.3m ($3.02m) with an increase of 125%.

Women's Super League (WSL) clubs spent more than any other league in the world, with £1.78m ($2.33m) going on incomings. Around £760,000 has been recouped in player sales by WSL clubs, with the window set to close on 13 September.

Liverpool broke their club record in June in signing Canadian teenager Olivia Smith from Sporting Lisbon for £210,000.

Clubs and managers have tried to blame the regulations, but the issue lies with them.

West Ham are understood to be in the market to sign a central defender on a free transfer in the next few weeks.

The Hammers have been linked to moves for Joel Matip and John Eagan after they left Liverpool and Sheffield United respectively this summer.

The club has just three central defenders available after revamping the squad in the transfer market after Julen Lopetegui replaced David Moyes as manager.

New signings Max Kilman and Jean-Clair Todibo are the first choice pairing with just Konstantinos Mavropanos backing them up.

Chelsea winger Noni Madueke has been rewarded for a strong start to the season.

The 22-year-old netted a hattrick for the Blues in their 6-2 victory over Wolves a couple of weeks back.

Speaking to the club's website he said: "I’m made up by it. It’s an honour and I’m blessed, I thank God for it. I can’t wait to link up with the boys.

"The manager called me about an hour or two before the England squad came out [in the afternoon] and broke the news to me. I was in my room, just relaxing preparing for the game [against Servette], watching SWAT on Netflix, and Cars [Lee Carsley] said I should give him a buzz. I did and he told me that I was in the squad. I was super happy about it."

  6. Livramento in the squadpublished at 11:45 British Summer Time 3 September

Newcastle defender Tino Livramento has also earned his first senior call-up.

After spending his youth in Chelsea's academy, the versatile defender joined Southampton in 2021 where he impressed before suffering a serious knee injury.

Last summer he made the switch to Newcastle for an initial £32m.

As a right-footer, he is most comfortable at right-back but can also be deployed on the left - something which Eddie Howe has utilised.

His call-up came after Newcastle teammate Kieran Trippier announced his international retirement.

Morgan Gibbs-White, a regular under Carsley in the Under-21 set-up, has also been handed his first call-up following his impressive start to Nottingham Forest's Premier League campaign.

"Morgan is a very attacking player, full of energy, very creative, very exciting," said Carsley.

"He has been really successful with England and I thought that was important."

Lille midfielder Angel Gomes, 23, left Manchester United for the Ligue 1 club in 2020. At United, he had broken into the first team in 2017, aged 16 years 263 days, the youngest player to make his debut from the club since Duncan Edwards in 1953.

"Angel is very technical, he controls the game with his skill and his technique. He is very determined, has a great attitude and loves football," Lee Carsley said.

"I think he is a player people will be excited to see."

Gomes was taken to hospital on 17 August after suffering a head injury in a Ligue 1 fixture against Reims. He later said he was "all good" after receiving treatment.

Striker Che Adams has withdrawn from the Scotland squad for Nations League games against Poland and Portugal but Rangers midfielder Connor Barron has been given a first call up.

Celtic pair James Forrest and Greg Taylor join Adams in pulling out of Steve Clarke's group, along with goalkeeper Robby McCrorie.

Barron and Sassuolo left-back Josh Doig have been promoted from the under-21s as cover, with Dundee goalkeeper Jon McCracken already drafted in to replace McCrorie.

Adams, 28, started all three of Scotland's group games at Euro 2024 before moving to Torino in Serie A, where has scored one goal in four appearances so far.

His absence leaves Lyndon Dykes, Tommy Conway, and Lawrence Shankland as centre forward options for Clarke.

I'm down in London Colney - now called the Realty Training Centre - home of Arsenal FC.

We'll have access to the women's training session this morning as they prepare for tomorrow's crucial Women's Champions League qualifier against Rangers.

After that we'll have a press conference with manager Jonas Eidevall and one of the players.

Arsenal were in Washington DC last month preparing for these qualifiers - it's vital they win them so they can reach the group stages which they failed to do last season, going out at this stage.

We're keen to see how prepared they are and what their squad availability will be after a good pre-season.

  12. Why would Victor Osimhen join Galatasaray?published at 11:08 British Summer Time 3 September

Victor Osimhen is one of the most sought after strikers in Europe so just how he ended up at Galatasaray is a curious case.

Of course, by the passion and size of their support, the Istanbul club can boast as being one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Yet, despite increased investment in the league in recent season, Turkish football is never normally a consideration for the world's best players.

But this is not a normal situation and it began in a decision made in December 2023.

Osimhen wanted to leave Napoli but still opted to double his wage to well over £200,000-a-week and renew his Napoli contract after winning the Scudetto as top scorer in Serie A six months earlier.

The deal included a £113million release clause which would give him a chance to leave but club president Aurelio De Laurentiis demanded that full sum was paid throughout most of the transfer window.

The cost put off the majority of Europe's biggest clubs but Chelsea were selling Romelu Lukaku to Napoli and hoped to leverage the situation.

They wanted to use Napoli's desire to sell Osimhen to force a cheaper deal either in the form of an initial loan or a permanent deal in the final hours of deadline day.

"We wanted a player that we decide it has to be on our conditions," said manager Enzo Maresca, alluding to Chelsea reluctance to pay the wages or fee during late night negotiations on Friday.

It left Osimhen in limbo with Lukaku joining up with Antonio Conte and has given Galatasaray a rare chance to secure one of the world's best forwards with the Turkish transfer window one of the few still open.

  13. Where has Carsley managed before?published at 11:03 British Summer Time 3 September

One of the arguments that could be put forward against Carsley as the permanent manager is his relative lack of top-level experience, though he has coached men's senior teams before.

As a player, he has a lot of experience of senior football, and in a career spanning over 500 games, he played 282 times in the Premier League.

The 50-year-old was caretaker manager of Coventry City in 2012 and 2013, and caretaker of Birmingham City in 2017. He also had a 10-game stint as interim head coach in the Championship before Dean Smith was appointed permanently at Brentford.

During his time as the Bees' interim manager he won five of his 10 games in charge and was named Championship Manager of the Month in October 2015.

Carsley says he loves to be on the training pitch with his players, describing putting the cones out before sessions as "the best bit" of the job.

However, the scrutiny that comes with being England manager would be something that he has never faced before, along with the bigger personalities and profiles of player that he will have to manage.

One of the things that comes with being England manager is the almost statesman-like role required when dealing with the media.

With so much interest in the team and the profile of players and manager being so high, their opinions on important matters carry weight.

When the England U21 side won the European Championship last summer, social media was rife with montages of the team's attractive football - dubbed 'Carsball'.

Those homemade edits resurfaced in the days after Southgate stood down and Birmingham-born Carsley was mooted as being among the contenders to replace him.

In contrast to the former Everton and Derby midfielder's playing career as a central destroyer, he encourages his side to build up with the ball and to express themselves.

At the tournament in Georgia his side was packed with technical players such as Liverpool duo Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones, and Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White.

Some of the biggest managerial names in world football have been linked to the England job since Gareth Southgate resigned after Euro 2024.

But, for now at least, it is Lee Carsley who takes over as England's interim manager for Nations League games against the Republic of Ireland and Finland in September - and possibly beyond.

Could the England Under-21 manager be a contender for the permanent role, following the pathway of his predecessor Southgate?

Get Involved - are Man Utd right to back Ten Hag?published at 10:31 British Summer Time 3 September

I'm sorry but Man Utd just need to get rid of ten Hag. Every single game last season was just terrible apart from the FA Cup final which saved his job. I don't get why he's still there.

    Josh

My hunch with retaining Ten Hag on a one-year deal is they will try for Kieran McKenna again in the summer after he has a year in the Premier League. He’s a boyhood United fan and has worked there before. It’ll be a shame, but he’s so good we will struggle to hold onto him if United come calling.

    Will, Tractor Boy

Regarding United chiefs and the coach, I think they are a bit stuffed really - if they sack him people will say why did they wait so long, if they keep him they will say they're stupid. I am not very keen on his people skills, but who do you get to replace him? Any top manager would be very wary to become another scapegoat or do they get a second-rate coach and go back to square one? As I said - stuffed.

In two months time we will be having the same conversation about Erik ten Hag, nothing is going to change. That is probably about the time they will sack him. They can't sack him now. Ineos would look idiotic as they had that show of faith.
