It may not feel like it now, but is that a point that could win Arsenal the title this season? I think they are going to run Liverpool very close this year. That could be a big point.

Gabriel Martinelli's stoppage-time equaliser showed why it is too early to write his Arsenal career off just yet.

The Brazil winger has had an excellent week, scoring and assisting in Arsenal's win over Athletic Club in the Champions League before earning the Gunners a valuable draw against Manchester City.

The winger has lost his starting place - starting two of Arsenal's six game this season - after a difficult time in his career but has shown just how important he can be when he is at his best.

Martinelli is one of the quickest players in the Premier League and both his goals this week played to his strengths, with the ball is played behind the opposition defence for him to run on to.

"I work for those moments. I leave [selection] for the gaffer, he knows what he does. I just do my best to help this football club," said Martinelli.

"Of course, I don't want to be on the bench. I want to play 90 minutes every single game but [Mikel] Arteta knows what he does, he's the gaffer and everyone trusts him."

We would have started with Odegaard if he had been fit so why not start Eze in his place. Starting line up was too cautious and paid City too much respect and had the feeling that our first aim was to avoid defeat even if this wasn’t the case.

  4. 'Why did Arsenal wait until the 90th minute?'published at 07:40 BST

My question would be; why did it take until the 90th minute for Arsenal to go on the offensive, why not from the start of the game?

I’m not normally critical of Arteta but it feels like he got away with one today. It felt like he admitted he made a mistake with his team selection by making those two subs at half time, while his other substitutions came really late on.

  5. 'We dominated almost every aspect of the game'published at 07:34 BST

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "At the very least [we deserved a point].

"I'm so proud of my players, the way we played, the way we dominated almost every aspect of the game. Very disappointed not to win the game.

"I think we played better than last year when we beat them. Much better."

On City's goal: "We had the situation, five against two, a lot of a scramble over the ball and in that moment, that split second, Halland runs on and they attacked the space in a great way - that's the quality they have.

"We are in the top end of the pitch, cross the ball and a lot of things have to happen but that's their quality."

On chances for City: "One is a corner, another is a counter attack and the other is a giveaway. That's it. To keep City to just that, chapeau to the boys."

Only 5 games in and we're seeing the same pattern from Arsenal. When I saw the team sheet, Arteta playing to not get beat - but not to win. Poor mentality from a second placed team, who clearly don't want to kick on.

  7. Finishers make mark but questions for Arteta over selectionpublished at 07:25 BST

    Arsenal 1-1 Man City

    Alex Howell
    BBC Sport football reporter

The Gunners came into this game after an impressive win in Bilbao where the substitutes' bench proved the difference - and it was the 'finishers' who rescued a point on Sunday.

The £250m Arsenal spent this summer means the club have given Arteta an abundance of options when things are not going his way, but his team selection in big games is going to be key if the Gunners are to lift a trophy this season.

Having started with the same central midfield - Martin Zubimendi, Declan Rice and Mikel Merino - as in midweek, it was clear early on in the first half that Arsenal needed some more attacking flair on the pitch.

The same trio also began the 1-0 loss to Liverpool and led to criticism of Arteta's conservative approach when playing against some of their rivals.

This has been an excellent week for Gabriel Martinelli who has scored two important goals in two games after a difficult time in his career.

However, questions will continue to come for Arteta about why his side cannot start matches in the same manner they have finished the last two.

  8. Martinelli snatches Arsenal late draw against Man Citypublished at 07:20 BST

Substitute Gabriel Martinelli scored a stoppage-time equaliser as Arsenal drew with Manchester City in a hard-fought Premier League game.

It is the second match in a row that Martinelli has made an impact off the bench, having provided a goal and assist against Athletic Club in the Champions League in midweek.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said his "finishers could be more important" than the starting XI after Tuesday's win in Bilbao - and that belief was again backed up at Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners went behind in the ninth minute on Sunday when Erling Haaland rolled past David Raya at the end of a devastating City counter-attack.

Arsenal pushed for an equaliser for much of the second half and were rewarded with Martinelli's dinked finish in the 93rd minute.

Arteta is now the only boss to have gone five successive games unbeaten against Guardiola in his managerial career.

  9. Bournemouth and Newcastle cancel each other outpublished at 07:15 BST

Nick Pope denied substitute Justin Kluivert a late winner as Newcastle United and Bournemouth played out a goalless draw at the Vitality Stadium.

Dutch forward Kluivert had a chance to win it for the home side in stoppage time, but Pope parried his free-kick from the edge of the area.

It was the only chance of note in the second half in a game lacking goal mouth action on the south coast.

Newcastle's record signing Nick Woltemade had a penalty appeal waved away after Bournemouth defender Bafode Diakite grabbed hold of his shirt inside the box in the second half.

Bournemouth fans, meanwhile, were furious when Newcastle defender Malick Thiaw avoided a second booking after substitute Ryan Christie was brought down outside the box late on.

But both sides ultimately had to settle for a share of the spoils - just as they did in the corresponding fixture last season.

  10. Ten-man Sunderland fight back to deny Villa first winpublished at 07:10 BST

Aston Villa's search for a first Premier League win goes on after 10-man Sunderland produced a spirited performance to come from behind and secure a crucial point.

Black Cats defender Reinildo was shown a straight red card in the 33rd minute for violent conduct, kicking out at Matty Cash after being bundled over by the right-back.

Sunderland dug in to frustrate the visitors and almost snatched the lead through Omar Alderete's 51st-minute header which crashed against the bar.

Villa thought they had earned their first win of the season when Cash then scored from 25 yards, with goalkeeper Robin Roefs beaten by the vicious swerve of the strike.

But the visitors were unable to build on scoring their first top-flight goal of the season, and Wilson Isidor equalised from close range after a headed assist by captain Granit Xhaka.

Sunderland are now unbeaten in three top-flight matches and have eight points from five matches.

Meanwhile, Villa have three and remain in the bottom three.
