    Portadown are aiming to bounce back from the 2-0 defeat by Mid-Ulster neighbours Glenavon on Boxing Day.

    Peter Campbell fired the Mourneview Park hosts in front with the Ports reduced to 10 men when keeper Aaron McCarey was shown a straight red card after rushing out of the box to try to deny Michael O'Connor, who was through on goal.

    It was 2-0 in style through the resulting free-kick with Quinn's set-piece crashing off the woodwork before finding the back of the net.

    Glentoran had to settle for a goalless draw with Big Two rivals Linfield after dominating the Oval encounter four days ago.

    Jordan Jenkins squandered Glentoran's best openings while Linfield goalkeeper David Walsh then looked fortunate to escape with a yellow card from referee Shane Andrews when he brought down Jenkins outside the area.

    With 20 minutes left on the clock the Blues were reduced to 10 men as Roscoe was sent his marching orders for a coming together with David Fisher.

    Glens captain Marcus Kane was also sent off for two yellows card for pulling Joel Cooper to ground.

    There is just the one alteration to the Carrick starting XI from Boxing Day with Emmett McGuckin returning from suspension and replacing Josh Andrews, who drops to the bench.

    Declan Caddell makes four changes to the Crues side who defeated Cliftonville with Robbie Weir, Jacob Blaney, Jordan Owens and Stewart Nixon starting.

    Kieran Offord and Jordan Forsythe are amongst the substitutes with Jordan Stewart and Mal Smith not in tonight's squad.

    Two teams in need of three points meet at Lakeview Park as Loughgall welcome Coleraine.

    The hosts haven't tasted victory since a 3-0 home win over Glenavon at the start of November while the Bannsiders' last victory came, ironically, here midway through the same month courtesy of a comprehensive 4-0 win.

    Loughgall manager Dean Smith makes three changes to the side which started the Boxing Day defeat to Dungannon Swifts as Robbie Norton and Pablo Andrade drop out of the squad completely while Nathaniel Ferris is named among the replacements.

    In comes striker Jay Boyd along with brothers Tiernan and Daire Kelly.

    Bannsiders' boss Dean Shiels also makes three changes to the team which came from behind to draw with Ballymena United four days ago.

    Rhyss Campbell, Connor Murray and Corey Smith all drop to the bench and are replaced by Jamie McGonigle, Ciaron Harkin and Kyle Spence.

    Ballymena welcome back Josh Carson, Andrew Scott and Ben Kennedy who all missed the 2-2 Boxing Day draw with Coleraine through suspension.

    They replace Calvin McCurry, Ethan Devine and the suspended Jack Malone.

    Glenavon make two changes from the side which beat Portadown on Boxing Day as Rhys Marshall and James Doona start in place of Christopher Atherton and Jack Malone, who serves a one-match ban after collecting a fifth yellow card of the campaign.

    It's a meeting between third v fourth at Shamrock Park where the winners will move up to second spot in the league table to end the calendar year.

    Both sides make three change from their respective Boxing Day games, with a new face between the sticks at either end.

    Aaron McCarey, Douglas Wilson and Josh Ukek drop out for Portadown, replaced by Jamie Ray, Baris Altintop and Shay McCartan, as they look to put their Mid-Ulster derby defeat in the rear-view mirror.

    Glentoran are on a six-game unbeaten run in all competitions and in search of a fifth-straight win at Shamrock Park.

    Goalkeeper Andrew Mills makes his first appearance of the season in place of Daniel Gyollai, Jay Donnelly returns from his two-game suspension as Dylan Connolly drops out, and James Douglas replaces Marcus Kane, who was sent off against the Blues last time out.

  8. Reds 'devastated' by Newberry deathpublished at 19:21 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2024

    Cliftonville have released a statement following the passing of 27-year-old defender Michael Newberry.

    "Our condolences are extended to Michael's family and friends, as well as the many team-mates he played with during his career, and fans who will be shaken and saddened by this heartbreaking news," the club said on Monday.

    "Rest in peace, Newbs."

    The Englishman also had a spell at Linfield and the Blues said their "thoughts and prayers of everyone at the club are with Michael's family and friends at this very sad time".

    The NI Football League said it passes on their "heartfelt condolences to Michael's family, friends and everyone connected with Cliftonville Football Club at this sad time".

    Cliftonville defender Michael Newberry has died suddenly at the age of 27.

    The English defender joined the club in the summer and made 24 appearances for the Reds.

    Newberry, who started his career with hometown club Newcastle United, also had a spell in Iceland with Vikingur before he joined Linfield in 2021.

    The former Northern Ireland Under-21 international spent three years with the Blues, winning two Irish Premiership titles.

    Cliftonville's game against Dungannon Swifts and Linfield's match with Larne on Monday night have both been postponed.

    Welcome to our coverage of tonight's Premiership action, which has been reduced to four matches following the tragic death of Cliftonville defender Michael Newberry.

    The 27-year-old from England, who also played for Linfield, died suddenly.

    The Cliftonville v Dungannon Swifts and Linfield v Larne matches have been postponed as a mark of respect.

    There's a third v fourth showdown as Portadown take on Glentoran at Shamrock Park.
