Sweden are without a win in qualifying

Sweden's hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup took a major dent after defeat by Switzerland in Stockholm.

Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka gave the visitors the lead from the penalty spot in the 65th minute after Sevilla midfielder Djibril Sow was brought down by Alexander Bernhardsson in the box.

Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi sealed the success in the fourth minute of added time when his effort deflected in off Atalanta defender Isak Hien.

Sections of the home support turned on Sweden manager Jon Dahl Tomasson at full-time, with fans chanting for the former Blackburn Rovers boss to resign.

Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres and Liverpool forward Alexander Isak started in attack for the hosts, who failed to register a single shot on target.

The defeat left Sweden rooted to the bottom of Group B with one point from three matches - eight behind the Swiss in top spot.

Second-placed Kosovo occupy the play-off spot on four points and visit the Swedes in their next qualifier on Monday, 13 October.

After reaching the quarter-finals of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Sweden failed to qualify for the 2022 edition in Qatar.
