Newcastle manager Eddie Howe on William Osula and just how close he was to leaving during the summer: "I think it was well documented, it was quite close for him that he could have left in a variety of ways, whether that was loan which was always our preference because from our view we wanted Will to play. We wanted him to continue his development, which he did brilliantly last year because I think he committed to a path of limited game time but big training time.

"A lot of work with Graham Jones, a lot of reviewing his performances and a lot of putting work into action. The next step for me was to try and play regularly. That was the aim, especially with us bringing two strikers in, the thought was that he could continue that development best on the football pitch.

"Obviously that didn't happen and much to our relief it didn't happen because Yoane [Wissa] picked up an injury and Will is vitally important. We believe in his talents, he's got speed. He's quick and athletic."

Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe on Yoane Wissa's return: "It's difficult for me to give a [specific] game, Yoane is in a different boat to the other two because he is coming back fitness wise, he has been out longer.

Lewis' return will be quite quick, in terms of once he is fit and available he will be back involved in the group. Same as Tino [Livramento], Yoane is on track but we need to make sure he has gone through a mini pre-season with us as well."

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe on the Carabao Cup: "We’re still in the early rounds and they’re so important, I know it’s cliché because it’s a knockout competition so of course they are but, finding a way to get through [is important] and we did that several times last season where it could have gone either way so, however we do it, it's just about getting your name in the hat for the next round."

On facing Spurs: "This will be a tough game tomorrow, we’re against a team who are in really good form away from home so one of the bigger challenges we’ve had.

"Tactically, very interesting and very versatile. They build up in lots of different ways. Very aggressive off the ball. They have different ways to make things happen [including] set plays. Very well organised and ultimately, set plays are a big guider of that. Credit to him [Frank] and his coaching staff to what they're doing."

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe on his journey in the EFL Cup as boss: "A lot of great experiences this competition for us. The [first] final was an amazing thing, still remember vivid memories from that day before the game and obviously the emotions after the game were mainly negative. I felt we left a little bit on the pitch that day. The Chelsea defeat is still painful for me because I felt we had a real chance to win.

"We put it right and did really well last year. We had a lot of challenging games. If you look at our fixture list to get to [the final], we had to beat Chelsea, Arsenal. A lot of great experiences for us which I think has helped us as a team, helped us grow."

Seeing how much the Carabao Cup victory meant to Newcastle United supporters and still does - do you think the Magpies' victory has breathed new life into the competition?

A lot of "disrespect" had been shown over the years with sides fielding weaker sides and the such but maybe now others will be more inclined to go for it once more.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has spoken to the media before his team take on Tottenham in the EFL Cup on Wednesday. He was first asked about Sven Botman's head injury: "As I said after the game, no concussion it was a cut, quite a nasty-looking cut for Sven. I think he had it stapled together. He didn't train yesterday, so we will see how he is today."

He added on Lewis Hall: "He is the closest, this game will come too quickly for him. We'll see how he is for West Ham."

And on squad rotation, Howe said: "I think it's an important decision coming up for this game because we want to progress. The competition means a lot to us, current holders so we don't want to give that up easily. But I have to trust the squad as well and we have some players who need football and need an opportunity to show their talents and what they can bring. There will be an element of that but I have to try and get the balance right."

It took 70 years for Newcastle United to end their wait to win a major domestic trophy last season. So the holders are not going to give up the Carabao Cup without a fight.

Just as Tottenham manager Thomas Frank talked up how his side were “very eager to win more trophies” ahead of Wednesday night’s game at St James’ Park, expect Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe to follow suit.

This may be a cup game, but both managers are likely to name strong sides as they look to reach the quarter-finals of the competition.

Howe will certainly be desperate to defend the trophy and build momentum following back-to-back wins against Fulham and Benfica.

Such a desire is likely to be the main theme of his news conference on Tuesday morning.

The Newcastle head coach will also give an update on Sven Botman, who had to come off at the weekend with a cut to the head, as well as offering the latest on Yoane Wissa’s prospects of making his debut next month as the summer signing steps up his recovery from a knee injury.

Brighton & Hove Albion

On how to deal wit the threat of Gabriel from set-pieces, Fabian Hurzeler said: "You can’t defend one against one. It is also not just Gabriel, they do it very well together and have really good patterns.

"On the other side, we are quite good in defending and also try to build a set-piece culture but that doesn’t come overnight and it needs time.

"It’s getting more important in the Premier League. We are quite confident that we are capable of defending against them."

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler on opponents Arsenal: "They are doing well, very good out of possession and good with set pieces so I think these are two main factors that make them so successful. Very disciplined. Everyone attacks and defends the box, they are very effective with set pieces so it will be a big challenge for us tomorrow."

On balancing squad rotation for the cup, Fabian Hurzeler said: "We have to believe and we really trust the young players because they are here for a reason.

"It is not about age, it is about quality, but for sure you need a good balance in the team."

Midfielder James Milner has "suffered a small muscle issue" so is unavailable for the cup game against Arsenal.

Kaoru Mitoma, Jol Veltman and Brajan Gruda "are getting closer" to a return but this game comes too soon for the injured trio.
