Nottingham Forest have confirmed that Wayne Hennessey will stay at the club as part of Rui Barbosa’s goalkeeping department. The former Wales international announced his retirement yesterday but will now continue his journey at Forest in a coaching role.

Hennessey, who joined the Reds in 2022, made nine appearances and brought vast experience from a career that included 187 Premier League games and 109 Wales caps.

On becoming a coach at Forest, Hennessey said: "I am delighted to continue my journey at the Club as part of the coaching staff. I really enjoyed my time as a player here and working with this incredible group."

Mbeumo has effectively two years on his contract and is valued at £70m. United would be better off going for Wissa and reinvesting elsewhere, surely?

Should Brentford accept Manchester United's £70m bid for Bryan Mbeumo, it would slip the Cameroon international just outside the top five most expensive forwards in Premier League history.

The 25-year-old would be sixth behind Kai Havertz and another United forward, Rasmus Hojlund, who signed for £72m from Atalanta in the summer of 2023.

    • Kai Havertz (Bayer Leverkusen to Chelsea) £71m
    • Rasmus Hojlund (Atalanta to Man Utd) £72m
    • Romelu Lukaku (Everton to Man Utd) £75m
    • Darwin Nunez (Benfica to Liverpool) £85m
    • Romelu Lukaku (Inter Milan to Chelsea) £97.5m

Pleased to see us going back for Mbeumo, although we shouldn't go over this offer in my mind. Still feel we need to see 2-3 more players come in otherwise this season could feel very long for the wrong reasons!

  6. How would Mbeumo fit in?published at 15:12 British Summer Time 17 July

    Alex Fletcher
    BBC Sport journalist

It was goals that United struggled with last season and the potential arrival of Bryan Mbeumo could certainly help that.

Between him and Matheus Cunha they scored 35 times in the Premier League last season, and can both be deployed on opposite sides of the pitch, with Cunha occupying the left ten position and Mbuemo on the right.

Both players hugely outperformed their xG last season, scoring around seven goals more than they were expected to, which suggests their ability to take on more difficult chances and create something out of nothing.

The missing piece of the puzzle as far as United's front three is concerned, is an out-and-out centre forward.

Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have both missed the mark so far in their Old Trafford careers, and whilst Ruben Amorim is believed to be looking at other attacking options, United's finances could mean persistence is the key.

Another option is to use the versatility of Cunha and play him as a central striker, freeing up a spot for Amad Diallo in United's attack.

To be fair, we were all expecting the Diego Leon transfer as the deal was done in January. We just weren't expecting everything else to be so slow! Hopefully, this will be the end of the Mbeumo saga, though.

  8. Man Utd's unwanted fivepublished at 15:00 British Summer Time 17 July

On 4 July, Manchester United made it known that the five unwanted players had asked to leave and would not train with the remainder of Amorim's squad.

Those five are Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia.

Since their exile, the only significant development involving the quintet was news that they cannot access United's Carrington training ground - which they can enter for rehabilitation and medical purposes - until Amorim and his squad have left for the day.

The members of the so-called 'bomb squad', a reference to their being bombed out, can train together at Carrington if they wish and combine that with work away from the complex, which is the final stages of a multi-million pound upgrade. But, as far as Amorim is concerned, they are done.

This move makes it impossible to think there can be any repeat of the 'peace deal' brokered between Sancho and former boss Erik ten Hag last summer. That agreement led to the England man joining United on their tour of the United States before he left for Chelsea on loan.

More pertinently, it lets interested clubs know those players are not wanted, meaning United are negotiating from a position of weakness.

And this is a big problem.

Is that fair from United? Should Brentford take the money and run? Or, do you think the Bees could push for more?

  10. A quiet window so far at Old Traffordpublished at 14:49 British Summer Time 17 July

Cunha & LeonImage source, Getty Images

When Ruben Amorim told the press he knew what he wanted his squad to look like by the time pre-season started, fans were expecting plenty of business at Old Trafford this summer.

Things got off to a good start with the arrival of Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5m last month.

But since then fans have been waiting for significant movement.

The signing of Paraguayan teenager Diego Leon from Cerro Porteno wasn't quiet the only signing many were expecting, but to date remains their one other incoming.

  11. Man Utd travel to USA next weekpublished at 14:42 British Summer Time 17 July

Manchester United will be looking to get the Bryan Mbeumo deal done and dusted before they fly-out to USA for their pre-season tour on Tuesday.

United are in America for just over a week, with matches against Bournemouth and Everton in Chicago and Atlanta before they head back to the UK.

Before that, they face old-rivals Leeds United in Stockholm, Sweden on Saturday.

So will Mbeumo be on that plane to the United States?

Manchester United have made a third bid for Brentford striker Bryan Mbeumo that could be worth up to £70m.

The offer is understood to be a £65m initial payment, with an additional £5m in add-ons.

Brentford are yet to discuss the offer and have not communicated to United whether it will be accepted.

United have remained confident about getting Mbeumo and had been hopeful of adding the Cameroon international to Ruben Amorim’s squad before they head to the United States for three pre-season games on Tuesday.

Ekitike in actionImage source, Getty Images

Hugo Ekitike can be a great signing for Liverpool FC. He can play on his own at the front or in a front two. He can also drift to the wing. He is versatile and comes from 18 excellent months at Frankfurt.

Ekitike excels in quick attacking transitions with his forward runs and his accuracy in dribbling with the ball at his feet. He can also do well in tight areas when his team is playing against a low block. His height will also come in handy for set pieces.

There is, though, a question mark around whether Ekitike will manage to up his goals and assist and find consistent high figures in this department; as well as if he can deploy an aggressive high-press style since he has not been exposed to that at Frankfurt.

However, he is a very exciting young French talent with huge potential to do very well in the Premier League. I am sure Slot will also like his link-up play and ability to drop to help build the attack phase, as this is an area Liverpool introduced last year. So all in all, a good signing for the Reds.

  17. Other deals that have been in the mixerpublished at 14:00 British Summer Time 17 July

What should have been a busy week has been surprisingly quiet, so far.

So many deals have been done in this transfer window, but there are also so many that are making slow progress or hitting stumbling blocks.

Brentford are at the heart of a lot of this. We know that Yoane Wissa is a target of Newcastle's, but Bryan Mbeumo has also been in talks with Manchester United for weeks, with the fee preventing a deal from being reached.

Then there's their quest for Ipswich's Omari Hutchinson. On Wednesday they had their £35m offer, which reached Hutchinson's relegation release clause, rejected as the offer was not cash up front.

It looked like Tottenham had secured Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest when they were set to trigger his release clause, but Forest are now considering legal action against the north London club they believe a specific confidentiality agreement clause in Gibbs-White's contract has been breached.

Gibbs-White has trained with Forest all week.

Chelsea are interested in Crystal Palace midfielder Eberehi Eze but Palace tweeted the England international in training today, external.

And then there's Noni Madueke, who reportedly had his medical at Arsenal on Monday for a move from Stamford Bridge to the Emirates. There's no update on that transfer yet.

He returns to the club he started his career with, having come through the youth system at Betis before a move to Barcelona.

Michael's comment "a lot of money off the back of one good season" basically defines 90% of big money transfers these days! Enzo Fernandez went for £100m after 17 games for Benfica and a good WC run, and Jhon Duran went for £60m+ after a few good goals for Villa!
