Scotland's Callum McGregor says his strength of "will" was crucial to his recovery from injury as he helped Celtic win the double and made it to Euro 2024.

The midfielder missed Scotland's friendly defeats in the Netherlands and at home to Northern Ireland in March because of an Achilles injury.

He also missed club action throughout the month but returned in April to spearhead Celtic's league and cup success.

"The injury one was bad timing, difficult injury to manage as well," the 30-year-old Celtic captain told BBC Sport.

"When we got the scan, it was bad news, it was pretty much season over, but with determination and everything there was still to play for and obviously having an eye on [Euro 2024] as well, sometimes the mind can do crazy things for you."

"I'm willing to put myself through anything for the team to get success and that's just the way that I am. I'm so glad that it turned out the way it did. In football, fortune favours the brave as well a little bit."

On Euro 2024, McGregor added: "I was desperate to be part of it. We want to not only get to tournaments but we want to take part and feel like we belong here.

"It's something that we need to enjoy and embrace and I'm sure we will. Hopefully, we are better off [than Euro 2020] and hopefully that'll show in the games as well."

  3. 'Happy campers in Scotland squad'published at 10:50 British Summer Time 11 June

Scotland are a happy camp. They are depleted in numbers with a very turbulent build-up to this, losing to Aaron Hickey, Nathan Patterson, Lewis Ferguson and Lyndon Dykes.

Everyone is on edge now. If they see a guy limping for half a second everyone is hyperventilating.

But it is a good camp and Steve Clarke has done a great job and we are not far off now from a big push.

  6. Scotland being 'extra cautious' with squadpublished at 10:39 British Summer Time 11 June

The reason there was a bit of worry around Andy Robertson yesterday was because he was withdrawn from training on Monday.

Pictures showed the captain getting a little bit of treatment before he walked off gingerly.

Striker Lawrence Shankland also exited the session early.

Scotland assistance coach said there was nothing to worry about yesterday.

"It's just a precaution really," said Carver of left-back Robertson. "The ball just caught his ankle and he will train [on Tuesday].

"He'll be fine. At this stage we are being extra cautious. He's okay and looking forward to tomorrow.

On striker Shankland, Carver added: "He had a little bit of a niggle from the other night, we're just protecting him as well. He's fine, everybody's good."
