As the 2023-24 season drew to a close Salma Paralluelo had the world at her feet.

Her first two years at Barcelona had delivered a quadruple and a treble, and the intervening summer yielded the biggest prize of all with Spain - the World Cup.

At 20 years old the former athlete had also finished third in the Ballon d'Or for a second successive year.

Her ascent to the top had been meteoric. Then came the breaking point.

In October 2024, after making 92 appearances for club and country in under two years, Paralluelo announced she was taking an indefinite break from the game, citing mental and physical fatigue.

She has been battling to rediscover her form since - and gets her chance to start tonight for the first time at Euro 2025, as one of six changes to the Spain XI.

This is the story of Paralluelo's remarkable rise to the top of the game, her injury and personal struggles, and why she can still light up Euro 2025 with Spain.

The Swiss police had a tough task escorting these supporters along the fan march to the stadium this evening.

The walk, which is supposed to take 30 minutes, took over an hour, with the Spanish fans holding things up with chants that involve coming to a standstill, sitting down, and then slowly building up to a crescendo.

I imagine there were a few angry drivers waiting for the roads to re-open.

The runners-up in Group B will face Norway, who won Group A last night, in the first quarter-final match on Wednesday 16 July in Geneva.

The winner of that would face the victor in the quarter-final between the winner of Group C and runner-up in Group D - which, as it stands, would feature England.

Meanwhile, the winner of Group B would face hosts Switzerland on Friday at 20.00 BST in Bern. The victor would face either the winner of Group D or second place in Group C.

Spain deserve all the credit they've had so far. It's a daunting task for whoever has to face them as the tournament progresses. It'll take something special to outdo them or get a win over them.

As has been the case with many countries drawn together in the Euro 2025 group stage, Portugal and Belgium met earlier this year in the Nations League.

Carole Costa struck from the penalty spot in Leuven to hand Portugal a 1-0 win in February, before Tessa Wulleart's double and another from Justine Vanhaevermaet in Funchal handed Belgium a 3-0 win.

I originally thought Portugal would progress from the group behind Spain but now it is a massive ask.

Facing Spain in the opener is always tough, but the 1-1 draw against Italy was the critical game and the one that killed Portugal. I had them to go through but then Italy have improved more and they have edged it with more quality in the final third that Portugal have not had.

There is still a chance for Portugal and they have to go for it. They know they are good at attacking, they just haven't had that final bit of quality as much as they would have needed.

Belgium have not had the cutting edge and the quality to get the points. They played against teams that have been really difficult to play against. We have seen Belgium can catch you on the counter-attack and they could get three points against which would be a consolation, but nothing else.

Belgium boss Elisabet Gunnarsdottir says that they won't be giving Portugal an easy ride in their final group game in Sion, despite already being eliminated from the competition.

"It’s still a European Championship game," said Gunnarsdottir. "Maybe they expect a demoralised Belgium or think I’ll change the line-up and hand out chances to other players, but that’s not the case."

The Red Flames reached the quarter-finals four years ago but won't be able to match that finish after losing 1-0 to Italy and 6-2 to Spain in their first two group games.

Gunnarsdottir added: "[Portugal] will face a Belgium that won’t give anything away. We want to finish this EURO properly. We will use this opportunity to continue to learn and push ourselves."

Portugal head coach Francisco Neto says that his side are focused on winning their final group game against Belgium instead of on the amount of goals they must score.

"Everyone talks about goals, but above all, we have to try to win," said Neto.

Portugal have only scored once across their opening two games, but they require three points and a six goal swing between themselves and Italy if they are to progress to the knockout stages.

"First, we need to win the game. But yes, we know that to go forward in the competition, we need to score goals.

"It’s about playing step by step, knowing the game has to be played over 90 minutes."

Portugal head coach Francisco Neto seems to be in good spirits ahead of his team's crunch game against Belgium tonight.

It's his 44th birthday today.

What a present it would be if his players can deliver Portugal's first qualification for a women's major tournament knockout stage.

Portugal are aiming to go through to the knockout rounds of a major tournament for the first time, having exited at the group stage at Euro 2017, Euro 2022 and the 2023 World Cup.

Lorenzo and Christina, who are matching in Federico Chiesa shirts, aren’t feeling confident about Italy beating Spain tonight, but they are hopeful that they do enough to secure their place in the last eight.

“It'd be great for Italy because in the past 12 years they didn't qualify,” Lorenzo said.

If Italy get through tonight, Lorenzo and Christina will be hoping to get their hands on some tickets for the quarter-finals.

Italy and Spain have only previously met once at a major tournament - in the semi-finals of Euro 97, when Italy won 2-1 on their way to finishing as runners-up to Germany.

That year was the last time Italy went through the group stages at a Euros unbeaten, while they have not got out of the group stage of this competition since 2013.

Italy have been Spain's bogey team over the past couple of years.

Le Azzurre were the first team to beat Spain after their World Cup triumph in 2023, running out 3-2 winners after scoring three goals in 18 second-half minutes. Then, in October 2024, Italy scored a late equaliser to hold Spain to a 1-1 draw in the Nations League.

I know Spain have been in superb form so far at these Euros, but don't write Italy off too early.

Spain have scored 11 goals across their two games so far at Euro 2025 - five in the opener against Portugal, six versus Belgium last time out.

England at Euro 2022 are the only team to score more times in a group-stage campaign - they bagged 14, so the record is very much in Spanish sights.

No team have ever scored four or more goals in three consecutive games across the Women’s World Cup or Euros. But if any side can, you would imagine it would be Spain.

I went to meet some of the locals in Bern earlier today, but they weren't the friendliest bunch.

Apparently bears have been kept in the city since 1513 and they have become a symbol of the city - seen on flags, souvenirs and number plates.

These days, there are now three furry celebrities - called Bjork, Finn and Ursina - that live in a large enclosure along the River Aare.

They didn’t wave back but to be fair, it’s un-bear-able in this heat.

The top two teams from each of the four groups will progress to the quarter-finals, with the sides in third and fourth eliminated.

If two or more teams in the same group are equal on points at the end of the phase, the following criteria will determine their rankings:

• Most points won in matches between those teams
• Goal difference in matches between those teams
• Goals scored in matches between those teams
• If teams still have an equal ranking, the above criteria will be reapplied exclusively to matches between the remaining teams to determine rankings
• If teams are still level then goal difference across all group matches is used
• Then goals scored in all group matches
• Then Disciplinary record
• Then higher position in the overall European qualifiers

With Portugal and Italy drawing 1-1 in Group B, we go straight to the fifth bullet point and downwards to decide rankings if they both end up on the same points after tonight - namely, if Italy lose and Portugal win.
