'We have to free ourselves from history' - new England boss Tuchel

  1. 'I think Carsley would have fit the bill perfectly'published at 08:38 British Summer Time

    Gary Lineker
Ex-England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily

We're starting to see some really talented young English coaches - Eddie Howe at Newcastle, Graham Potter, Russell Martin. These are coaches now that are actually trying to play out from the back and are more tactically aware. At the moment, they didn't seem fit to go for an English coach.

I think Lee Carsley would have fit the bill perfectly. We've seen in the last two major tournaments, they have been won by two coaches that have not really coached teams from the league - they have come through the system.

I think we have got the coaches but they haven't quite built the trust in them enough for the FA to go "we want someone that has won trophies," even though the last two major tournaments were won by coaches that had never won trophies for clubs.

I would have [chosen Lee Carsley]. He won the Under-21 World Cup with a lot of these players without even conceding a goal so he is no question an imaginative coach.

  2. 'Tuchel was full of swagger'published at 08:33 British Summer Time

    John Murray
BBC Radio 5 Live chief football correspondent on Football Daily

I don't mean this to be disrespectful to Lee Carsley but we were in the same auditorium at Wembley as we had been last Thursday night in the immediate aftermath to the defeat to Greece. He really struggled in that room with the questions he had to answer.

While he struggled, Thomas Tuchel came in and of course you're never going to see anyone feel better or look better than they do on a day like this when they get a job like this, so he was full of swagger.

All the questions came his way - he had them all, he faced them all and I thought he came up with pretty good answers to just about everyone.

Is Thomas Tuchel the first England manager since Alf Ramsey to have a comb over? If so that could be a very good World Cup omen.

  5. 'Tuchel up there with the best'published at 08:23 British Summer Time

    Rob Green
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily

He’s really well liked within the players in the dressing room and by the coaching staff as well. Speaking to the guys at Chelsea and they said he’s up there with the best, of however many they’d had at Chelsea at the time, up there with Mourinho for man management and he invited the whole backroom staff to his house in London, he listened to everyone’s opinion. They sat down had a drink, he played some records.

In tournament football, you’ve got to get everybody on side to keep that feel good factor going over six weeks, two months by the end of it – so I think that’s a critical part of it and he is a charismatic guy, he has got that about him.

  6. 'It puts a lot of pressure on this next World Cup'published at 08:18 British Summer Time

    Andros Townsend
Antalyaspor midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily

In a way it probably puts more pressure on this one tournament, knowing it’s the only one you’re contracted for. You could get a horrendous draw, face France in the last 16 and go out. Even though you’re building something well, all of a sudden the fans turn on you, the media who don’t need a second invitation to turn on you. I think it puts a lot of pressure on this next World Cup.

  7. 'We've got a guy in who wins trophies'published at 08:14 British Summer Time

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily

I think in the grand scheme of things, it’s a really good appointment. When you look at where England are, how long it is since we’ve won a trophy – we’ve got a guy in who wins trophies and was used to handling big name players and has a proven track record and at this moment in time he was probably the best guy that was available.

  8. Is there a lack of young English coaches?published at 08:09 British Summer Time

This will be a running theme in the wake of Tuchel's appointment and expect Premier League bosses to be asked for their thoughts in today's news conferences.

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham was asked about whether hiring German coach Tuchel as the national team boss reflects badly on the number of elite English coaches around.

“Our pathway is really strong, both from a coaches and players’ point of view,” Bullingham said.

“There are a lot of fantastic young coaches around and obviously (Tuchel’s assistant) Anthony (Barry) is one of those.

“I think any federation in the world that is looking to hire a senior manager, clearly you would love to have five to 10 domestic candidates who are coaching clubs in your domestic league, challenging and winning honours in your domestic league and European football. We are not quite in that place at the moment.

“In the background, we have got to keep helping our young coaches to get the best opportunities they can and to get them good opportunities at clubs. We would love to have more English coaches managing in the Premier League, for example. I think there is a balance there.”

I don't understand why anyone would expect Tuchel to sing the national anthem, yes he's the England coach but he's not English. Seems to be a question designed to create nonsense headlines about will he, won't he.

  10. 'Tuchel could have a say in November, but he will leave it to Carsley'published at 08:00 British Summer Time

The FA's chief executive Mark Bullingham has said that while Thomas Tuchel could have a say in November's Nations League matches, the German will leave all duties up to interim manager Lee Carsley.

Bullingham added that Tuchel will assume all duties fully when his role as England manager officially begins on 1 January, 2025.

“He is absolutely able to be in contact with us, but the reality is, he is going to leave that to Lee," Bullingham told BBC 5 Live's John Murray.

“It’s Lee’s camp to run, they are Lee’s games to run, of course he is available if he ever wants to speak to him, but Thomas takes over on the first of January.”

  11. 'Tuchel's January arrival works for all parties'published at 07:56 British Summer Time

The FA's chief executive Mark Bullingham has said that Thomas Tuchel not beginning his role as England manager until January works for all parties.

Bullingham added that the plan was always for interim boss Lee Carsley to manage all six of England's Nations League matches before returning to his post as England's under-21s manager.

“We were always really clear with Lee that he had three international windows to run the Nations League and we think that was the right thing to do," Bullingham told BBC 5 Live's John Murray.

“Thomas was always clear that he wanted his absolute focus on the World Cup.

“To come in on the first of January, on an initial 18-month project, to see if he can do as good as possible in the USA, it worked for him and it worked for us.”

  12. 'We see parallels between Tuchel and Wiegman'published at 07:51 British Summer Time

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said that he sees similarities between new England men's manager Thomas Tuchel and Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman.

Wiegman, who is from the Netherlands, won the 2021 Women's Euro with England's women and Bullingham hopes that Tuchel can emulate that success.

“I think Sarina would say she felt she came into a team that was ready to win and she instilled that confidence in the team and I think part of that came from the fact she was a proven winner," Bullingham told BBC 5 Live's John Murray.

“Of course, we see parallels for that and that was forefront in our mind, when we were looking for a head coach, someone who could really give the team confidence and they had what it takes to win.”

  13. 'Southgate showed that England success is possible'published at 07:47 British Summer Time

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham has said that former England manager Gareth Southgate showed that success with the Three Lions is "possible".

Southgate took England to back to back European Championship finals and Bullingham has said that he hopes Thomas Tuchel's arrival as England manager will lead to a first major trophy since 1966.

“I think one of Gareth [Southgate’s] biggest achievements is he has shown the job is possible," Bullingham told BBC 5 Live's John Murray.

“You know we have been knocking on the door in the last four major championships and we are really confident that we now have a team that is ready to win.

“We wanted a coach that was able to take us that final meter.

“We obviously felt that Gareth was incredibly close on a number of times and we didn’t quite get there.

“Let’s see if we can get there with Thomas.”

People say that if Thomas Tuchel wins the World Cup for England, no one will care about his nationality. You're wrong. The Germans will. I have a lot of German friends, and should we win, I can already hear them saying "you only way England could win the World Cup was by having a team run by a German". And I'd have to agree.

  15. FA didn't have to break the budget to get Tuchel - Bullinghampublished at 07:39 British Summer Time

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said that the FA did not have to splash the cash in order to bring in Thomas Tuchel as the new England manager.

Bullingham explained that Tuchel and his coaching staff has fitted into the FA's salary structure in the same way that Gareth Southgate and his assistants did.

“Absolutely not, we have got a really tight salary structure," Bullingham told BBC 5 Live's John Murray.

“Gareth and his team fitted within it. Thomas and his team fit within it.

“This is about far more than money for him and the team.

“They see the opportunity to work with a super talented group of players and to challenge for honours in the USA.”

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said that while the FA could not match the salary offer that some clubs are able to, he felt the vacancy of the England manager's job was an attractive role.

Bullingham added that a number of interested coaches, including Tuchel saw valued the opportunity despite the FA's financial limitations.

“I think they are, of course those are factors when you go into a new recruitment process," Bullingham told BBC 5 Live's John Murray.

“Look, we cannot afford to match the salaries the top clubs pay, but we felt we had something special to offer.

“We have got the opportunity to win a World Cup, we have got the opportunity to work with a really good talented group of young players, and Thomas absolutely bought into that.

“To be fair, there were quite a few coaches interested, who saw the opportunity way beyond financial measures.”

  17. 'We wanted the very best for the job'published at 07:30 British Summer Time

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said that he had no concerns about hiring a German manager in Thomas Tuchel to replace Gareth Southgate.

He added that the focus remained on hiring the best candidate for the job.

“All I can say is we wanted to get the very best for the job," Bullingham told BBC 5 Live's John Murray.

“The one who can give us and the players the best chance to do well in the USA and we believe we have done that.”

  18. 'We feel hiring Tuchel gives us the best chance of winning 2026 World Cup'published at 07:25 British Summer Time

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said that he believes hiring Thomas Tuchel as England's new manager will give the Three Lions the best chance of winning the 2026 Fifa World Cup.

Bullingham added that the FA looked at what they were hoping for from their next manager before Euro 2024 took place.

“We did a lot of work before the Euros on what was the ideal characteristic and profile of an England manager, to help us to give us the best chance of winning in a tournament and Thomas fitted that really well," Bullingham told BBC 5 Live's John Murray.

“He was always on our target list, so we made a proactive approach to speak to him, in amongst speaking to a number of other people in the industry, because we wanted to run a thorough process.

“He was outstanding, he gave a really strong presentation, outlined how he felt he could help us win and the chemistry felt really good and we concluded the partnership quite soon after that.

“We did interview some English coaches, amongst interviewing some international coaches, but our focus was on having someone to give us our best chance of winning in the USA and we think we have got that.

“We felt it was really important for our fans, for the players, for the whole country, that we appointed the coach that would give our talented group of players the best chance to win in the USA and that is what we believe we have done.”
