Gallagher switches to La Liga club Atletico Madrid after an 18-year association with Chelsea which began at the age of six.

Palmer should have won both awards as he’s achieved more at Chelsea than Foden did last season, individually speaking. He also burst into the scene for England and made two immediate, crucial impacts.

Blackpool have sacked head coach Neil Critchley after back-to-back league defeats at the start of the season.

The 45-year-old was appointed boss for a second time in May 2023 following their relegation to League One.

He guided them to the Championship through the play-offs in his first spell in charge before leaving to join Aston Villa's coaching staff under Steven Gerrard.

In a club statement, external, owner Simon Sadler said: "Despite his best efforts over the past 12 months, there have been a number of disappointing results and performances which means that a change is needed to give the club every possible chance of competing at the top end of the division this season."

Richard Keogh will take charge on an interim basis.

I have a theory that Palmer wasn’t actually that good last season, his team-mates were just so bad that he looked amazing in comparison

  12. Why are Barca willing to let Gundogan leave?published at 10:09 British Summer Time 21 August

Ilkay Gundogan was a key player for Barcelona last season but his situation has been influenced by the club's complicated financial position and the £51m signing of Dani Olmo from RB Leipzig earlier this month.

Like Gundogan, Olmo also didn't feature in Saturday's 2-1 win at Valencia, with coach Hansi Flick saying he is not yet fully fit.

However, that overlooks the fact that Olmo is not actually registered to play for Barca yet.

The Spanish league has cost control rules and Barca are currently in excess of their annual spending cap so they must raise money before being able to register Olmo.

They can do that by generating new revenue streams, selling players or simply getting them off the wage bill.

Gundogan is one of Barca's highest earners having joined on a free transfer from Manchester City last summer so although the German still has another two years on his contract, Barca may be willing to accept a cut-price fee.

Manchester City are working on a deal that could bring midfielder Ilkay Gundogan back to the club.

The 33-year-old left City for Barcelona in 2023 after captaining Pep Guardiola's side to their historic Treble.

However, the Catalan giants' well publicised financial issues have prevented them from registering new signing Dani Olmo and releasing one of their higher earners would smooth that process.

City are wrestling with early personnel issues that include the £81m departure of Argentina forward Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid and an injury to Norwegian winger Oscar Bobb that could keep him out for four months.

Gundogan could provide a short-term answer to these problems and would not require a settling-in period.

Manager Pep Guardiola did not want Gundogan to leave City last year, but the club were unwilling to offer the German midfielder the contract length he wanted.

Today's Telegraph mentions Ilkay Gundogan's potential exit from Barcelona because of the "chaos" at the Spanish club. More on that shortly.

You may also have noticed on the back of the Times that, after Jamie Vardy's antics against Tottenham on Monday, they pick the cult heroes that fans love (or love to hate).

Those they mention on the back page are Vardy, former Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli... and Ali Dia!?! Hands up who remembers him!!

I am not entirely sure how Walker has made team of the season. He may have won the league with City, but he underperformed a lot. I feel there were far more deserving full backs of being in team of the year.

    Today's newspapers

    The Times

Those players looking to leave Chelsea seemingly now include Raheem Sterling.

Like Ivan Toney, he was left out of his side's Premier League opener, but unlike Toney, Sterling's omission was down to a "technical" decision rather than "transfer interest".

Boss Enzo Maresca has also left Sterling out of his squad for Thursday's Europa Conference League play-off first leg with Servette and now the Times reports that Maresca has told the former England forward that he is "not in his plans for this season".

  18. 'Blues face mad dash to offload £200m of talent'published at 09:37 British Summer Time 21 August

    Today's newspapers

    Daily Mirror

Ivan Toney and Ilkay Gundogan also feature on the back of today's Mirror, which leads on Chelsea, saying they face a "mad dash to offload £200m of talent" before the transfer window shuts.

Conor Gallagher has already agreed a move to Atletico Madrid but there are four or five more players that Chelsea are looking to sell or send out on loan, which would be the best for both parties because if they stay at Stamford Bridge, the Blues would be struggling to register them in their 25-man squad for the Premier League.

Former Celtic and Hibernian manager Neil Lennon has been sacked by Rapid Bucharest after just six matches.

The 53-year-old ex-Northern Ireland midfielder, who also had spells in charge of Bolton Wanderers and Omonia Nicosia, was appointed by the Romanian club in May.

A run of five draws and a defeat has Rapid sitting 12th in the 16-team SuperLiga.

A club statement, external on Lennon's departure read: "We thank him for all his dedication and energy on the Rapid bench, especially since he has been through difficult times lately, and we wish him much success in the future."

Lennon, who also captained Celtic, had been at home in Northern Ireland earlier this month following the death of his mother.
