    England

England and Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon on the pride of playing for his country: "It means everything to me, this is for me the pinnacle of football. To represent you country at a major tournament.

"You have to do so well to get to this point. I'm here now, I want to keep going and establish myself in the team and be someone that the manager can’t drop. I've still got so much to do to get there."

  3. 'I actually didn’t know I was falling off until I hit the floor'published at 16:22 28 June

    England

England v Slovakia (Sun, 17:00 BST)

    England

England and Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon on and handling the pressure and what he's learned: "Just the same in life, stay level headed don’t get too high or too low. The pressure and things that can come with this kind of stage, it's not really real because you can change it in an instant.

"If we go and put a top performance in at our next game, then everything changes and that the good thing about football."

  5. 'I know they don’t like playing against me'published at 16:12 28 June

England v Slovakia (Sun, 17:00 BST)

    England

England and Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon on his direct style of football: "I think it does, I think it brings a sense of unpredictability. I draw a lot of fouls and it can put teams on the back foot and that’s how I play football.

"That works for me, that’s the way I feel best playing. I know how hard I am to play against, I can feel it, I know they don’t like playing against me and I’m going to carry on doing it."

England v Slovakia (Sun, 17:00 BST)

    England

England and Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon on form: "I’m very up to speed. Before the Iceland game I had an ankle injury which kept me out for the last week or two of the season but I had some time off for that to recover.

"In that Iceland game I felt a bit rusty, a bit tired. But from then on I’ve felt great in training. I'd say over the past two weeks, I couldn’t do anymore than what I’ve done in training. I'm in really good form, I’m training really well. I run a lot in training or a game so I get a lot of fitness."

  7. 'It will be a really difficult game'published at 16:05 28 June

England and Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon on opponent's Slovakia: "Slovakia are very organised, a threat on the counter attack with some direct and experienced players at this level.

"It will be a really difficult game and we are preparing for that.

"I think Slovakia have done so good in the tournament so far the group was a lot tougher than it looked on paper and they’ve done really well."

    SWITZERLAND

    • Switzerland have reached the knockout stages at each of the last six major international tournaments (EUROs/World Cup) since the start of the 2014 World Cup. The only European nation currently enjoying a longer such run is France (7 in a row).
    • Excluding shootouts, Switzerland have failed to win any of their seven round of 16 matches at major international tournaments (EUROs/World Cup – D3 L4), progressing to the quarter finals on just one occasion (EURO 2020, eliminating France on penalties).
    • Remo Freuler has assisted three goals in his last four UEFA EURO appearances for Switzerland. The only Swiss player with more assists at the European Championship is Steven Zuber (4).

    ITALY

    • 15 of Italy’s last 26 knockout matches at major international tournaments have gone to extra-time, including four of their last five. Overall, the Italians have seen more games go extra-time than any other nation across the World Cup + EURO (21) and only Spain (11) have contested more shootouts than they have (10).
    • Italy have won both of their UEFA EURO round of 16 games at EURO 2016 (2-0 vs Spain) and EURO 2020 (2-1 vs Austria). The last European Championship tournament that didn’t feature Italy in the quarter-finals was back in 2004, when they went out in the group stage.
    • Gianluigi Donnarumma made 11 saves for Italy in the EURO 2024 group stages, the most by an Italian goalkeeper in the group stages of a major tournament since Gianluigi Buffon at EURO 2012 (also 11).

England v Slovakia (Sun, 17:00 BST)

    England

England and Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon on his desire to play: "I don’t think I need any opportunity to want it more. As I said, I can only control so much and that’s everything I do every day and I tried and push the lads as best as I can when I train.

"When I get on I’m trying to stay on, I’m not trying to come off. I'm playing to start the next game, that’s my mindset."

  11. 'England have realistic chance if players perform to their capabilities'published at 15:55 28 June

Phil McNulty Q&A: #bbcfootball, via WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply)

Ashley: Do you see England as having a realistic chance of winning the Euros, given the favourable draw on paper that they now have?

Phil: Hello, Ashley. They have a realistic chance if these talented players can actually perform to their capabilities, but if not they have no chance.

As for a favourable draw, I’ve heard all this before, particularly when England played Iceland in the last 16 at Euro 2016 and look what happened there. A draw is only favourable if you play well and lots of teams in that half of the draw have been playing a lot better than England.

  12. 'Everything starts with doubt'published at 15:52 28 June

England v Slovakia (Sun, 17:00 BST)

    England

England and Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon on managing self doubt: "Everything starts with doubt.

"Everyone naturally doubts themselves to begin with. I think the key is recognising that, then coming up with ways to manage it. In football, I think it's more off the pitch and just before you go out, when that doubt starts to come in, that doubt before games, the butterflies. Anyone who tells you that doesn’t impact them is a liar. But it’s the best players who can be self aware to know they are feeling that and change it during a game."

  13. 'We’ve got to stay present as a team'published at 15:50 28 June

England v Slovakia (Sun, 17:00 BST)

    England

England and Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon on maintaining the hunger to win during difficult periods: "We can only control so much. In the past games we weren’t where we want to be but as I said, it’s in the past.

"We’ve got to stay present as a team, stay focused on what’s a head of us. We've got a lot coming up, we’ve got a lot to look forward to. If we let past games affect us, then we are not going to perform to the best we can."

  14. Southgate substitutions have been 'reactive & like-for-like'published at 15:48 28 June

Phil McNulty Q&A: #bbcfootball, WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply)

Helen in Carmarthen, west Wales: Hi. Why isn’t Gareth Southgate making more substitutions? Particularly Lewis Dunk?

Phil: Hello, Helen. I think he has been making changes but they have not exactly been in great circumstances, such as taking Trent Alexander-Arnold off after 54 minutes against Denmark then replacing all three attackers at once, 15 minutes later. Not ideal.

Southgate then felt the need to remove Conor Gallagher for Kobbie Mainoo after 45 minutes against Slovenia. It has all been reactive and like for like. He has not had the luxury of making changes when the things were going well.

As for Dunk, in my opinion I don’t recall any circumstances that have called for his introduction.

#bbcfootball, via WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply)

Thank you so much for the questions you sent in for Phil McNulty's Q&A today.

BBC Sport's chief football writer has now left the building, so to speak, so please do not send in any more.

But he has left us with some more answers as a parting gift - we will try to publish as many as we can before this page closes.

Phil also wanted to pass on his thanks to all of you who sent him a question, as well as apologies for those he could not get to.

We're am sure he will return for another Q&A next week, after England's last-16 tie with Slovakia.

And of course we will bring you more quotes from Gordon's press conference.

England v Slovakia (Sun, 17:00 BST)

    England

England v Slovakia (Sun, 17:00 BST)

    England
