Simon Thorpe: With the amount of talent on display (on paper at least), England should be at the very least a free flowing, creative, attacking side....they aren't! Has to come from coach

  4. 'The guessing game will continue'published at 07:45 British Summer Time 14 October

    John Murray
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

In his post-match media conference, when Carsley was asked if [questioning whether] he has ruled himself out of the running to get the job on a permanent basis is the wrong assessment, he answered: 'Yes, definitely.'

So confusion reigns. But perhaps only on the outside.

Within the FA it smacks of all options being kept open. It is possible Carsley's England could win next month’s final two group matches handsomely, finish top of the group and win promotion back to the top tier of the Nations League.

It's also possible that the top trophy-winning coach that Carsley referred to is either not available now or only will be at a later point. Hence the keeping of all options open.

And so on the outside the guessing game will likely continue into next month.

  5. 'Guardiola available next summer'published at 07:41 British Summer Time 14 October

The most important thing is getting the right man for England.

The FA have to go for the best guy. Pep's [Guardiola] contract is up in the summer.

We feel no closer to learning the long-term plans for England.

Lee Carsley won't rule himself in or out of the running for the job, while Roy Keane has suggested the FA should be going after Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.

But who do you think England should appoint as Gareth Southgate's permanent successor?

  8. 'England deserve world class coach'published at 07:26 British Summer Time 14 October

Lee Carsley said England deserve "a world-class coach" as their next manager and conceded he "is still on the path to that".

But the interim boss insisted it was "definitely" wrong to say he has ruled himself out of the running for the permanent job and he is still keeping an "open mind".

Carsley was placed in interim charge of the England senior team after Gareth Southgate stepped down in July, two days after England's Euro 2024 final defeat by Spain.

The 50-year-old took on the role before England's Nations League games "with a view to remaining in the position throughout autumn", while the Football Association continued its recruitment process for a new head coach.

Carsley has not confirmed he is in line for the permanent position, but after Thursday's loss to Greece at Wembley said he would "hopefully be going back to the U21s" - where he was head coach before moving up to cover the senior team.

  9. Unconvincing England recover against Finlandpublished at 07:19 British Summer Time 14 October

England recovered from the embarrassing Uefa Nations League loss to Greece at Wembley but were still not totally convincing as they finally overcame Finland in Helsinki.

Interim manager Lee Carsley made six changes from the debacle against Greece, with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford replaced by Dean Henderson, but England failed to sparkle until the side ranked 64th in the world and without a point ran out of steam late on.

The recalled Jack Grealish settled early England nerves with a cool finish from Angel Gomes’ excellent pass in the 18th minute, and Finland missed chances to put Carsley and his side under further pressure before Trent Alexander-Arnold's brilliant late free-kick settled the game.

Declan Rice scored from close range with six minutes left to give the scoreline a more satisfactory appearance for Carsley and England.

  10. Good morningpublished at 07:15 British Summer Time 14 October

England managed to bounce back from their shock loss to Greece with a return to winning ways against Finland on Sunday evening, but the long-term direction of the Three Lions remains unknown as we await the appointment of Gareth Southgate's permanent successor.

We'll get stuck in to all the reaction to that - and plenty else - right away.
