Former Liverpool goalkeeper David James on Mohamed Salah's future: "I think that Mo Salah cut his hair off and got better! For years and years he was iconic for his hair. His touch was better, he looks like a new player both visually and performance wise.

"I think however Arne Slot is doing it - whether through training or individual work - he's getting the best out of a player who Liverpool fans thought for years and years has always been at his best.

"If he were to continue like this, then why would you want to try and bring someone else in when you have got Mo Salah performing like this?"

'Salah’s words will bring this situation under some serious scrutiny'published at 10:33 British Summer Time 2 September

    Phil McNulty Q&A

Anon: Phil, will the Liverpool hierarchy be able to successfully resolve the contract situations of Salah, Van Dijk & Alexander-Arnold?

Phil: Mohamed Salah certainly created a stir after the win at Manchester United when he effectively announced it would be his last season at the club and no-one at Liverpool had discussed a new contract with him.

That is a real surprise to me but Virgil van Dijk has pretty much said the same.

Salah’s words will bring this situation under some serious scrutiny – maybe that was his intention – and increase the spotlight on Liverpool’s hierarchy to address this with more urgency.

It is unusual for three world-class players to go into the final year of their contracts like this and Liverpool cannot afford to lose any of them.

The club's owners are not known for offering long-contracts to players in their 30s, but common sense must surely prevail in the cases of Salah and Van Dijk, although of course they have to want to stay as well.

In case you missed it, Mohamed Salah has scored 10 goals in nine appearances at Old Trafford for Liverpool in all competitions. It's his happy place...although there can't be too many grounds in the Premier League that the Egyptian forward has not enjoyed visiting over the years.

Former Manchester United's midfielder Jesper Blomqvist on the weekend's hero and villain: "Unfortunately, it is quite an easy one. I love him as a player, but my villain has to be Casemiro.

"Not my hero, but a hero to other people has to be Mo Salah - just for scoring eight straight goals in a row at Old Trafford. It's a crazy stat."

    Phil McNulty Q&A

Christian, Liverpool: Given the opposition so far (including a poorly performing Man Utd), can we really read much into Arne Slot's start at Liverpool?

Phil: Very fair question, Christian. What we can say is that Arne Slot could not have done any better. He has inherited a superb squad from Jurgen Klopp, which is a rarity for a new manager taking on another job, but you can see the buy in from the players already.

And while it is very much business as usual, there are also subtle differences. Liverpool look a bit more controlled under Slot as opposed to the thrilling, but occasionally chaotic, approach under Klopp – that did bring great success.

The signs are good. He is doing it his way without trying to be Klopp. He also has an air of authority as well.

    A superb start…although just a start.

  11. Ten Hag denies Casemiro rumourspublished at 10:01 British Summer Time 2 September

    Man Utd 0-3 Liverpool

Erik ten Hag insisted Casemiro can remain an important player for Manchester United despite replacing him at half-time after a dismal display in Sunday's 3-0 home defeat to rivals Liverpool.

The Brazilian midfielder lost the ball in the build-up to both of Liverpool's first-half goals and was taken off at the break, replaced by the 20-year-old Toby Collyer, who was making his Premier League debut.

Ten Hag denied rumours that Casemiro had left Old Trafford at half-time.

"I met him after the game in the dressing room, so he didn't leave the stadium at half-time," said the United manager. "Why I subbed him was because we are 2-0 down against an opponent as Liverpool, with their qualities, they are very good.

"We had to take risks because we want to bounce back, then you need players in midfield to cover ground, therefore we put Toby Collyer on the pitch.

"I think that in football everyone has to take responsibility. I'm sure he is a great character and he won everything in his career that you can imagine. I am sure he will keep contributing to our team and Casemiro is always winning so he will be there."

  14. Bristol City’s managerial searchpublished at 09:47 British Summer Time 2 September

    Emma Sanders
BBC Sport Senior Women's Football Reporter

Last week Lauren Smith stepped down from her role as head coach at Bristol City Women.

It means the Championship club, who were relegated from the WSL last season, have just six days to appoint a new manager before their season starts.

The club has a shortlist of names but we don’t know who is on it and whether there has been any developments.

As for Smith, we know she is in advanced talks elsewhere. There had been rumours about her taking up an assistant role at Manchester City but we believe that’s not the case.

Sources have told us she has had discussions over the England U19s head coach position, as well as considering various roles across the WSL.

Good morning as we head into the final two weeks of the Women’s Super League transfer window.

There were some big developments over the weekend with Tottenham announcing the arrival of Australian forward Hayley Raso on a two-year deal, before we reported Spurs midfielder Celin Bizet was having a medical at Manchester United.

I've been told the medical went well yesterday and they are just waiting on paperwork completion now.

United are moving quickly to try to get Bizet signed in time for their pre-season trip to Marbella, which they depart for tomorrow.

United have triggered the release clause in her contract - believed to be around £60,000.

Shocking was how Roy Keane branded Manchester United's performance against Liverpool, while Keane's former United team-mate Gary Neville slammed Erik ten Hag's players for their "terrible errors" in Sunday's 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford.

While Liverpool fans are lauding over Salah, no-one has mentioned that they have a £150m asset (if you believe the reports linking him to Saudi Arabia last year) about to walk out the door next summer for nothing! How's that good business?

It's hard to imagine Mohamed Salah's post-match comments about his lack of contract talks taking the gloss off Liverpool fans' celebrations following their 3-0 win at Manchester United, but they have somewhat gazumped Arne Slot's side for column inches.

Salah's quotes dominate the Guardian's back-page coverage, which says the Egyptian "issues contract plea after leading United rout".
