Ruud Van Nistelrooy has lost 10 of his 15 Premier League games as manager – twice as many as he lost in 34 matches in charge of PSV in the Eredivisie (5).

What do you make of the cost-cutting measures at Man Utd?

A necessary clampdown on wasteful spending, or a kick in the teeth for hard-working staff?

What's on offer at your workplace? Do you get a free piece of fruit? Watch out for those banana skins...

  4. Man Utd to close staff canteenpublished at 12:37 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Manchester United is to close its staff canteen and instead offer employees a free piece of fruit as part of more cost-cutting measures at the club.

A staff meeting is due to take place this afternoon when it is anticipated a fresh round of redundancies will be confirmed.

Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been determined to drive down costs at United, believing huge amounts of money are being wasted at a time when he is trying to stem losses in excess of £300m over the past three years.

Head coach Ruben Amorim has already admitted the first-team squad must take responsibility for that as it is by far the most expensive part of the business.

United are currently facing the possibility of a £20m reduction in Premier League prize money this season after dropping to 15th from last season’s eighth-place finish, which many inside the club said was unacceptable. Each place in the table is worth approximately £3m as part of the domestic and overseas TV distribution.

Only wingers/forwards in your poll. There are other positions and, while they’re hard to compare, Van Dijk is indisputably the best player in his position in the world, much like Rodri was last year. Surely that separation from the rest of the field is a better indicator of quality than trying to compare half a dozen similarly talented forwards.

Salah is undoubtedly the best in the world at the moment. Would be interesting to find out how big an impact AFCON is having in any contract negotiations. It’s over Christmas next year and if Egypt go deep he could miss 8+ games!

Mohamed Salah's stats compared to others in Europe's top five leagues show why he is being talked up as the best player in the world right now.

Salah's 25 league goals this season is four better than Bayern Munich's Harry Kane and Atalanta's Mateo Retegui while his 16 assists is five more than what 17-year-old Lamine Yamal has bagged for Barcelona in La Liga this campaign.

The Liverpool forward's 41 goal involvements also puts him well clear of Omar Marmoush and Kane, who are joint-second with 27 goals and assists combined.

Lionel Messi's 66 goal involvements (50 goals, 16 assists) in 2011-12 is the most by a player in Europe's big five leagues since 2006-07 followed by Cristiano Ronaldo's 64 (48 goals, 16 assists) in 2014-15.

Raphinha must be right up there with the best in the world at the moment. Having a great season in La Liga and in the Champions League. Dragged Barca through a few games by himself. Proper footballer and always gives 100%.

  13. Poll: Who is the best player in the world right now?published at 12:04 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February

You can have your say, of course, on whether Mo Salah is the current best men's footballer in the world, or whether you would give the honour to another player.

Mohamed Salah is still some way off when it comes to most goals scored in a single Premier League season - he needs 11 from the 11 games left to match Erling Haaland's all-time record of 36 goals for Manchester City in 2022-23.

Thierry Henry (2002-03) and Kevin De Bruyne (2019-20), share the record for most assists in a season with 20. Salah only needs five more to set a new record there.

He is also about to eclipse the all-time record for most goal involvements in a single season - he is only six short of the 47 goals and assists previously recorded by Andy Cole (1993-94) and Alan Shearer (1994-95).

However, the Liverpool forward has been unmatched on the road.

He is already level for the most away goals in a single season with Kevin Phillips (1999-2000) and Harry Kane (2022-23) on 16 , and also has the joint most away assists alongside Cesc Fabregas (2014-15) with 11.

His 27 goal involvements in away games is six better than Andy Cole's 21 - which was the best before this season.

  15. Salah 'looks as good as ever'published at 11:55 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February

    John Murray
BBC Radio 5 Live chief football correspondent

[Mo Salah] looks as good as ever, I would say. Yes, he's 32 years old, and yes, he's out of contract at the end of the season, but that's 30 goals for Liverpool this season.

Eight seasons he's been there and he's reached 30 goals in five of them. 44 is his best, which he achieved in his first season with Liverpool. He's now scored in his last eight appearances, and if he carries on the form he's in, he might come close to topping that.

A lot of talk about Arsenal falling off because they have no striker, but Liverpool started with two midfielders (Szoboszlai and Jones) and two wingers (Salah and Diaz) up top yesterday. If course it helps when one of your wingers is easily the best player in the world.

    Man City 0-2 Liverpool

    Luke Edwards
Daily Telegraph writer on BBC Football Daily

On why Mohamed Salah is not spoken about in the same terms as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo...

Salah hasn't won as much as Messi or Ronaldo. They were serial trophy winners at their peak. That will be the only reason why.

But he has now got that beautiful blend of experience and athletic prowess. Maybe his peak is only coming. The peak for the players used to be 28 or 29 previously, but it does seem to be moving up with modern sports science, diet and the way the players look after themselves.

His numbers are ludicrous, remarkable, stunning! If Liverpool want this to be the first of many Premier League titles, they need to keep Salah there. Because they will be instantly weakened if he was to walk out of the door in the summer.

Mohamed Salah's excellent season has seen him top the list for both goals and assists in the 2024-25 Premier League, with 25 and 16 respectively.

Alexander Isak and Erling Haaland are joint second in terms of goals scored this season - 19 - while Chris Wood's 18 goals for high-flying Nottingham Forest has him fourth.

Coming to assists, Bukayo Saka, Mikkel Damsgaard and Antonee Robinson share second place with 10 each during this campaign with Tottenham captain Son Heung-min bagging nine.

The Liverpool forward also leads goal involvements by some distance, as his combined 41 goals and assists from 27 games is 17 more than of Isak (19 goals, five assists) in second place.

  19. 'Liverpool can build a new empire if Salah stays'published at 11:36 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February

    Man City 0-2 Liverpool

    Luke Edwards
Daily Telegraph writer on BBC Football Daily

Mohamed Salah still has so much more to give at the highest level. He is running the Premier League and he is the best player in the league by some distance. It will be a real shame if it came to an end.

Salah can still sign a lucrative contract with Liverpool and that move to Saudi Arabia will still be there in 12 or 24 months' time. So I hope he stays.

There will be a lot of Premier League managers and players who will be hoping he leaves because if he stays, he will make Liverpool favourites for the title again next season.

We could be seeing the start of a new empire and a return of Liverpool's dominance. But to do that, they will want Salah to stay.

Yes, Salah is the best player in the world. Goals and assists from the wing. Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk are the only players that would get in the Real Madrid XI. Lewandowski is 2nd best player. Bellingham 3rd. Vinicius doesn’t make top 10.
