Liam Boyce scored his first Derry City goal before being shown a second yellow card

Ten-man Derry City fell to a 3-1 defeat at home to league leaders Drogheda in the Premier Division.

Liam Boyce opened his City account just after the hour but was shown a second yellow card moments later for stopping a counter-attack.

A quick-fire double from Conor Keeley turned the game on its head before the final quarter.

Warren Davis added a third late on to ensure the visitors left with all three points.

Derry stay sixth after the first round of fixtures with the Drogs a point clear at the top of the table.

Boyce's joy short-lived

Following a run of four games unbeaten, Derry welcomed Drogheda to the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium hoping to avenge the FAI Cup final reverse last November.

City came from behind to beat Cork last week and had to survive a couple of scares in the opening period against the high-flying Boynesiders.

The breakthrough eventually came when Boyce got on the end of namesake Ronan's delightful cross on 61 minutes.

But the striker's joy was short lived as he was giving his marching orders for a cynical pull on the halfway line and the home side were reduced to ten.

Less than five minutes later the Candystripes were behind as Keeley netted twice at the new North Stand end.

Derry had only lost one of the last 11 meetings at home prior to tonight's game but then in form Davis condemned Tiernan Lynch's side to defeat scoring his fourth goal in five matches in the closing stages.

City make the trip to face Galway United next Friday night.
